Does salt water heat up to 50 Celsius faster ̊�than fresh water under the same conditions?

Original HypothesisIf salt water is heated up to 50 Celsius, then the time ̊�

taken to heat will be less than the time it took the fresh water to heat up to 50 Celsius. ̊�

taken to heat will be less than the time it took the salt water to heat up to 50 Celsius. ̊�

Testing Procedure

Materials: Independent Variable- Salt/Fresh Water· 100 ml of fresh water · 100 ml of salt water Dependent Variable- Time taken to heat· Bunsen Burner to 50 degrees Celsius· Ruler · 2 glass beakers Controlled Variables- Amount of Water,· Plastic Beaker flame height, height of beaker from the · Graduated Cylinder flame, same beakers used· Eye Dropper · Computer with Vernier · Temperature Probes · Timer/Stopwatch · Paper Towels

Testing Procedure(cont.)Procedure Step 1: Measure out 100 ml of fresh water Step 2: Pour 100 ml of fresh water into glass beaker Step 3: Set glass beaker with fresh water on ring stand 10 inches up from the table Step 4: Set up vernier lab quest so that a temperature probe is recording the temperature

of the fresh water in the beaker. Step 5: Light Bunsen burner Step 6: Set Bunsen burner flame height to 4 inches Step 7: Bring out time measuring device Step 8: Bring Bunsen burner underneath ring stand Step 9: Once Bunsen burner underneath ring stand start timing Step 10: Carefully watch the time and temperature Step 11: Once the vernier lab quest shows that the temperature is 50 Celsius ̊� stop the

timer immediately and record the time. Step 12: Repeat this 4 times. Then, once finished, Repeat Steps 1-12 with the salt water.

Analysis/Conclusion

We wanted to know if salt water will heat up to 50 Celsius faster ̊�than fresh water under the same conditions. Our average for saltwater was 11:04:25, and our average for fresh water was 9:69:75. Fresh water heats up to 50 Celsius faster than salt ̊�water does.

Errors that could have occurred were: Not measuring accurately, not timing accurately, or having the Bunsen burner flame at different heights. We could definitely be more accurate, and do more trials to get better data.

We did have to change our hypothesis. We thought that salt water would heat faster than fresh water, but it actually heated slower than the fresh water.
