Trend Report

The presentation of colour-blocked scenes was prevalent across Salone del Mobile. Layered tones of warm burgundy red through to rose hues with beige, a hint of bright pink and bold blush featured heavily, while turmeric and mustard yellow combined with rust and orange were also highlighted. Green was also noteworthy, with the swing away from deeper forest tones complete, making way for calmer sage and avocado tones moving right through to ocean blue.

A recurring theme this year was that of a bulbous and feminine form. Curves were exaggerated on lounging in particular and voluptuous pieces reigned supreme.

Trend—Colour Blocking

Trend—All About Curves

Expect to see a celebration of the sense of touch in 2018–19. A prominent philosophy of tactile upholstery—be it faux fur, velvet or solid weaves—was evident across Milan Design Week. Strong metallics have lost their lustre with mirrored and reflective surfaces taking pride of place.

Australian Designers

A number of local talents were active in Milan this year, with the most talked about being LOCAL DESIGN. 26 Australian designers—the largest independent showing of Australian Design in Milan to date—showcased their selected pieces in an exhibition that founder Emma Elizabeth says was “directed toward showcasing and advancing awareness of Australian design to a global market.” Stylecraft partners, Ross Gardam and Tom Skeehan, formed part of the collective, both taking the opportunity to exhibit collections soon to be released at Stylecraft.

Skeehan presented the Nave Armchair and SO Glass Light, while Gardam showcased his Ora desk lamp in new finishes and a preview of the Noon Lounge.

Alexander Lotersztain of Derlot Editions exhibited his 100% recycled QTZ Lounge in the gardens of the renowned and respected Rossana Orlandi gallery. Originally released in stainless steel for Ro, the limited edition collection was inspired by the naturally occurring geometric forms of Quartz and born out of Lotersztain’s passion for materials and technologies.

Arper‘Arper Values’ was the concept presented in 2018

to convey Arper’s design direction, introducing new collections and updates to existing ranges. The creative team of Maio Architects, Lievore Altherr and Clase, drew inspiration from the ‘values that drive us, to shape our present and our vision’.

Rooms within the stand took you on a journey through Arper’s collection with each space featuring unique conceptual styling elements that adapted and captured the individual character of each piece. Balanced, yet playful, colour-blocked scenes were created to highlight the latest additions to the Arper family of products.

Arper

Introducing a new modular collection of seating, tables, ottomans and consoles. Designed by Iwasaki Design Studio with the intention of developing “islands for gathering”, the range addresses the needs of mixed-use waiting and lobby areas in a variety of contexts.

Iwasaki drew his inspiration for the Kiik collection from “observing public spaces like parks, museums, airports—places where people are on the move. Today public spaces are dynamic and active, they accommodate a range of needs: stillness and motion, activity and rest, work life and private life.” The new Kiik range meets the needs of modern life—a system that allows you to sit, stand, lie down, chat, read, write, watch, eat and wait.

Sleek and sophisticated, the Dizzie collection expands to include the option of a Carrera marble top. Available in occasional, coffee and dining heights.

Arper

Sculptural in form and architectural in its execution, Paravan has been designed by Lievore Altherr to articulate and define spaces. Softer and more discreet in nature than Parentesit, Paravan intends to enclose a conversation and create intimacy in otherwise open spaces with sound absorbing panels that support focus, concentration and collaboration.

Designed to complement existing Arper collections with a unified background, the various assembling elements allow for endless compositions, from open, large panels and spatial dividers, to enclosed or partially-enclosed areas where increased privacy is a requirement.

Paravan was previewed at Milan Design Week, launching officially at Orgatec late in 2018.

RitzwellAs is to be expected from Japanese brand Ritzwell,

their 2018 stand presented a calming oasis within the hyper activity of the fair ground. Designed by Shinsaku Miyamoto and Roberto Di Stefano, the stand appeared to be ‘closed’ to the outside world, triggering a curiosity to explore the brand inside. The few openings in the structure were conceived as ‘tokonoma’, raised alcoves typical of Japanese interior architecture that showcased the icons of the Ritzwell collection.

Ritzwell

Renowned for their high quality materials and focus on contemporary forms, Ritzwell launched the Jabara Sideboard designed by Shinsaku Miyomoto. A collection of storage units, the manufacturing precision and pure lines offer a modern interpretation of Japanese tradition. Defined by the sliding door, the continuous fine lines particular to Japan exude a nostalgic warmth. Testament to the beauty of the new piece, Jabara has been awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2018.

Designed by Shinsaku Miyamoto, the Beatrix Easy Chair released in 2017 was again in the spotlight with the launch of the accompanying footrest, adding to the supreme level of comfort.
