LETTER FROM THE OWNER

The day we discovered this house was a cold and rainy one. It was November 1985. We had decided to rent for the first year in this area, to give us time to get an idea of just where we might prefer to live. We had been looking at houses all around the DC metro area… McLean, Arlington, Alexandria, DC, and close in on the Maryland side. On this particular day, we had been looking all afternoon; it was right at 5 pm and we were tired, disillusioned, hungry and heading for home.

I checked the paper once more and saw there was one more house circled that was close to our apartment. When I

mentioned it to Mike, I said, “Let’s skip it. We’ve already looked at one house in Salona Village and we didn’t like it.” He responded, “We’re this close; we may as well at least just drive by and take a look at the outside.”

The house was nestled in a naturalized yard… tulip poplars, Japanese maples, dogwoods, azaleas, vinca, ivy, etc. The

setting was beautiful, even in November. On entering, I was not impressed with the kitchen, an important feature of any home. It was small, somewhat dark, and PINK! So far, this house was just OK… but as I continued to look, and especially after heading downstairs, I began to see that the size of the house was deceiving – from the outside, it looked like a one-story rambler, but inside you found there was another whole level – it just kept on going! I began to think there just might be real potential here after all. Then we came back upstairs and walked out onto the deck… and the view took my breath away! That was the moment I knew this HAD to become my home! I tried to conceal my excitement as much as possible, but as soon as we got home, I told Mike we had to make an offer quickly; we couldn’t let this one get away from us.

After we moved in, we had the hardwood floors refinished, remodeled the kitchen (it’s now larger, more open, brighter,

and NOT PINK), and did several other improvement projects over time. One example is the brass rail over the sliding glass doors in the living room for hanging the drapes. To match this, we also added a brass foot rail to the kitchen breakfast bar. Each project made the house more our own home and I hope you can add your own special touches to make it uniquely yours.

When we think of our home, we think of convenience and nature; only after time do you also realize that you are sur-

rounded by wonderful neighbors – neighbors that are friendly, but not intrusive and always there if you need them. This isn’t just a house; it’s truly a home in every sense of the word.
