Recent Arts Academy events have spanned the globe, so to

speak, with a two-day Introduction to Meditation retreat and leather-tooling workshops taught by Cary Schwarz.

The return of meditation teacher, Mary Webster, brought together fourteen students for this two-day exploration of meditation techniques and practice. Held at the City Center, the retreat

introduced participants to the meditative practice of Recollective Awareness – this particular practice asks practitioners to allow any and all thoughts instead of block them out, providing practitioners with the opportunity to confront nagging issues and truly be able to be in the moment. Many thanks to Howard Carroll for sponsoring this enlightening opportunity!

Renowned leatherworker Cary

Schwarz, offered two days of workshops on leather-tooling in late September. In a three-hour class for youth, Cary gave a “taste test” of leather-working and helped youngsters get acquainted with leather tools and basic techniques. The following day, Cary led a full day class for seven adult students, giving them individualized instruction and demonstrations; with a class full of artists and craftspeople, it was an explosion of creativity and learning!

We are excited to offer fourteen arts and humanities education opportunities in

collaboration with the Salmon School District during the 2013-2014 school year!

From in-school concerts for the entire K-12 student body to artist residencies in the classroom we are providing enriching and engaging opportunities that will support the new core curriculum benchmarks and give important creative outlets to our youth. With programs including Shakespearience, Literature to Life’s presentation of “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” and a writing and historical research residency with Teresa Clark, this is going

to be a great year for the Arts Academy!

In addition to our in-school programs, we’re thrilled to be hosting work-study interns in our office! This fall, we have been blessed with SHS Sophomore, Annie Brown, who brings an incredible spirit, love of the arts, and work ethic to our operation.

As always, we are thankful for the ongoing support of and collaboration with the district administration and teaching staff and we can’t wait to report back to everyone with photos and stories of learning and creating!

40 classical music lovers got a real treat this past July at our first Summer Baroque

Chamber Salon Concert, featuring a stunning string quintet of musicians – Greg Ewer, Carrie Krause, Adam LaMotte, Nathan Whittaker, and Daniel Zuluaga – who performed six gorgeous sonatas. Set on the veranda of Valerie Brackett and Nikos Monoyios’ home at Eagle Valley Ranch, guests were treated to an intimate musical performance and, afterwards, enjoyed a decadent feast of Greek dishes prepared by Valerie and the staff of Eagle Valley Ranch.

The concert was the result of a wonderful collaboration with Jean Morrison Executive Director of the Sanders County Arts Council, home of the Montana Baroque Festival. We were thrilled to raise over $2,000 to support the Salmon Arts Council’s ongoing programs and initiatives in Lemhi County. Many, many thanks to our event hosts, Valerie Brackett and Nikos Monoyios, for opening their beautiful home and preparing such a gorgeous evening for everyone!

Summer Baroque Concer t Fundraiser Hits All the Right Notes

Tammy Dahle is our new Office Administrator and she hails from our

very own backyard! A longtime resident of Salmon, she’s been raised in this beautiful valley and hopes to be buried here. Tammy and her husband own a local concrete business and have two kids.

Her previous employment at the Salmon Public Library and the Salmon School District has helped fuel her passion for reading and literacy. Her hobbies include running her own blog which is devoted

to her love of books as well as reviewing upcoming books for some fancy pants publishers out of New York.

She looks forward to bringing her love of working with kids to the Salmon Arts Council.

“I can already predict that I will love being involved with the Arts Academy as well as outreach with the local schools. I’m excited and ready for this new adventure!”

Are you from Salmon? If no, how did you get here? My family moved to Salmon in 1970 from Los Angeles, CA ( I was just 3). My father came up here to hunt, went back to California and said, “I just found heaven on earth.” Although it took 2 years to get out of the rat race, my parents moved us all out and never looked back. (Oh yeah, my mother was 8 1/2

months pregnant with my sister).

What do you love about Salmon?I love the people the most! We are a little out of touch with the rest of the world, but that’s just fine with me. I love the amazing beauty God has created all around us. I love the fact that we can see a glimpse of the world through the culture brought to us through the Salmon Arts Council.

How long have you been involved with the Salmon Arts Council?

We have been members since 2001 but have enjoyed the arts in Salmon for 20 plus years.

Why do you choose to support the Salmon Arts Council? How have the arts made a difference in your life? We have been bringing our 3 kids to many events over the years. They have seen many school activities through school as well as participating in dance, music and plays over the years. It has contributed to their overall appreciation for the arts as well as fostered personal knowledge in all areas of dance, music, art and personal interest in travel. I feel that so much of who we are as individuals is partly due to the inspiration we have received through the Salmon Arts Council. I will never forget watching “Barchious”(a foot stomping, energy packed band) when our daughter was in 4th grade. She came home and said, “ Mom, I want to learn to play the fiddle.” So she did! Our daughters both have danced in many numbers with Arts Council events and our son’s musical ability has been influenced by Mr. John Anderson at the High School and other musicals.

We’re bringing back our biennial auction and wine-tasting and are ready to Paint the

Town Red!

As you’ve probably noticed, the Bear has gone into hibernation as the park construction commences! Thanks to the 94 community members, businesses, and out-of-town supporters, the park and its centerpiece – an interactive water feature starring our bear – will be a reality in the near future. From all of us at the Salmon Arts Council and the Friends of the Bear committee, THANK YOU for supporting this important civic project!

full of hustle and bustle, I think we all felt a little like a tuckered-out tyke ready for a good long nap! But, to use the parlance of my home state of

Texas, pull up those boot straps because this fall ain’t waiting for no one!

You can get into the holiday spirit at our wool-felting workshop, where you can make adorable Santas, and at our holiday wreath workshop where you can create wreaths made of fresh foliage

while enjoying hot spiced cider! Take care of your Christmas and Chanukah gifts at our Paint the Town Red! auction where you are going to be tempted by all manner of treats, experiences, and art! And, of course, we’ll ring in the season with our truly community Christmas concert with Jason Farnham – watch out for cameos from some very special local celebs!

We’ve been busy here at the Salmon Arts Council not only planning some really engaging, entertaining events, but we’ve been digging in to the hard work of refining our work for you, our members and community. We’ve been engaging members of the community in extended dialogue about how we can maximize

our impact in Lemhi County and we’re excited to analyze and report back to you in the Winter Muse on what we’ll be doing to make our arts programming even leaner, meaner, and even more geared to what you’d like to see happen in our community!! As we develop our capacity (again, welcome, Tammy Dahle!), we continually want to be making sure that we are being the very best stewards of your support by bringing you the very best in arts and humanities.
