Sturgis cancels Shuswap eventThe 2013 Sturgis North Motor-

cycle Jamboree and Music Festival proposed for Silvery Beach near Chase has screeched to a stop.

Sgt. Gary Heebner of Chase RCMP told Chase council Tuesday that the event has been cancelled. He said it’s unknown if the jambo-ree will be located at the same site in 2014, and it’s rumoured organiz-

ers might be looking at a venue in Merritt.

Heebner told the Shuswap Market News that police were informed Fri-day by the Neskonlith Indian Band that Sturgis North was being can-celled.

The Market News could not reach Chief Judy Wilson of the Neskonlith band nor Joan Hansen, president of Sturgis North, for comment prior to the newspaper’s deadline.

District also received word from Chase RCMP that the event has been cancelled.

Cpl. Mark Skotnicki sent an email Tuesday to the CSRD, noting that the organizers have cancelled the event and so restrictions on police officers taking leave during the event could be rescinded.

Matt Noble, chief administrative officer for the City of Merritt, told the Market News that the city has received no official overture from

Sturgis North. Brad Handel, owner of Techlec-

tric, one of the businesses owed money from the 2011 motorcycle rally in Salmon Arm and area, said he sees the cancellation as positive.

“We were never going to get our money back anyway, so the reality is, at least they’re going to stop creating more debt.”

In 2012, the Motoplex Speedway and Event Park in Spallumcheen hosted the event.

The palatial Malakwa residence that serves as home to convicted drug trafficker Colin Martin is back on the market, though its sale remains subject to the federal seized property man-agement act.

The 6,700-square-foot home at 3621 Northway Rd. is cur-rently listed at $850,000 – a substantial drop from the $1.75 mil-lion asking price back in January 2011, when the house was briefly on the market despite a court order granted to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada and the RCMP Integrated Proceeds of Crime sec-tion preventing the sale.

Paul Riley, a Crown counsellor with the prosecution service, says the restraint order on the property was recently varied by the B.C. Supreme Court to allow for the property’s sale, with net proceeds

to be held under the seized property man-agement directorate.

“If the property is sold, then net proceeds will be restrained in the place of the property it-self,” said Riley.

Riley said the vari-ance was granted at the request of the property’s registered owner. Land Title records list num-bered company 311165 B.C. Ltd. as the prop-erty’s owner. The com-pany’s director is listed as Steve Ambrose of Sicamous.

Martin and Cahill are tenants of the home, which sits on one of three neighbouring properties raided by police in July 2010. Beneath a workshop on one of the neighbouring properties, investigat-ing officers uncovered a bunker that contained about 3,000 marijuana plants. From the prop-erty at 3621, or Lot 5, court documents state police claimed to have seized two baggies of

marijuana, a paper bag containing marijuana with the name “Colin” written on it and other drug paraphernalia, as well as documents and emails showing Mar-tin, his common-law wife Jennifer Cahill and Gorge Timber Ltd. (of which Cahill was listed as president) arranging for the bunker’s con-struction, and a Health Canada application for a licence to produce marijuana prepared in Martin’s name.

Martin and Cahill are both facing related drug charges for production and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Martin remains be-hind bars and is sched-uled for a pre-trial con-ference in Kelowna on April 9 in relation to the above drug charges. He is also expected to be in court in September for extradition hearings for separate charges re-lating to a cross-border drug smuggling opera-tion.

Local talents are put-ting it out there Sat-urday to support two non-profit groups – the women’s emergency shelter and Shuswap Lake Health-Care Soci-ety in the process.

Popular for his por-trayal of Hank Snow in the Louisiana Hayride, radio personality Pat-rick Ryley brings Hank to the Shuswap The-atre, a co-producer of the fundraiser.

Ryley will be accom-panied by the stellar guitar riffs of another local favourite – Peter Clark.

Homegrown in the Shuswap, indie artist Aimie Laws’ vocals resonate in her own a mysterious and intrigu-ing sound. Laws will perform music from her new CD, accompa-nied by Tyler Matthews (bass), Mark Green-halgh (drums) and Jon Treichel (lead guitar).

And The Elk Tribe is a fresh, new, local group exploding onto the music scene.

“Our goal is to write simple, raw, good mu-sic that’s pleasing to all folks,” says the group on their website. “We

have a foot-stompin’ groove, sweet harmo-nies and an infectious energy. Our sound is unique.”

Band members in-clude: Zach Harder on guitar and rhythm, Levi Harder on lead vocals, glockenspiel, and rhythm, Brayden Harder on bass and vo-cals, David McMaster on violin and mando-lin, and Amanda Rob-bins on lead vocals and synth.

With 100 years of history, the Shuswap Lake Health-Care Aux-iliary continues to meet changing needs.

More than 70 mem-bers volunteer in a wide range of services to support health care in the Shuswap.

Last year, the Shuswap Area Fam-ily Emergency Society (S.A.F.E.) supported some 140 to 150 fami-lies (800 to 1,000 indi-viduals if all services are included), says cri-sis intervention support worker Sara Inskip, noting the society relies heavily on community support.

“We supply families we support with hous-ing, clothing, healthy food choices, hygiene

products, baby needs, toiletries and house-hold start-up items, and being a non-profit our budget is limited,” she says. “Without help from the community, we wouldn’t be able to do that.

Inskip says S.A.F.E. Society workers are thrilled with support that will be forthcom-ing from Saturday’s concert and a fundrais-ing silent auction at the show.

Tickets are available in advance for $20 at Touch ’A Texas in the

Mall at Piccadilly, or $25 at the door.

They say that change is inevitable. While that may very well be true, whether or not specific changes are for the better or worse, usu-ally depends pretty much on your perspective.

If you happen to be a fis-cally conservative federal politician who genuinely believes that balancing the budget is critical to the sur-vival of our nation, and, that our natural resources should be developed and exploited in order to accomplish finan-cial stability for all Canadi-ans, then something like the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project would be a good thing.

On the other hand, it you are the kind of individual who is inclined to stand on the edge of a mountain ridge somewhere, looking out at a pristine wilderness val-ley as it spreads before you, and feel like you are stand-ing at the alter of the Cre-ator’s church, you might be of the mindset that having a pipeline running smack-dab through such a setting could, quite possibly, be a bad thing. My point is that each person sees things in a different light.

The fact that we live in a democratic country where important decisions can be openly discussed before being acted upon by Parlia-ment is good thing. I’m pret-ty sure that most, if not all, of us could agree on that point.

I’m pretty sure, also, that most of us would like to think that out government is acting our best interests. After all, we do elect our political representatives to represent our wishes in Parliament. So my question then, is why does our current federal government seem to be making changes to acts of federal legislation with-out first giving Canadian citizens an opportunity to express their ideas, opinions and concerns?

In my two previous col-

umns, I referred specifically to changes to the Fisheries Act, the National Energy Board Act and the Species at Risk Act that were made to Canada’s environmental laws with the passing of Bill C-38. Bill C-38 repealed the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and effec-tively introduced a new ver-sion of the act that contains a number of subtle changes – changes that should worry most Canadian citizens to some degree. Changes that worry me, at least.

Most issues can be viewed from various angles and, like I said, in different lights. I am not trying to say that one perspective is better or more important than anoth-er on any given issue. My problem is with our federal government sneaking im-portant legislative changes through in an omnibus bill. These are changes that will have far-reaching effects on the environment, the wild-life that lives within and the lifestyles of many people – without our knowledge or having a say.

One has to wonder at the intent, if not design of these changes, which effectively

weaken many of the laws and much of the legislation that was previously in place to protect our freshwater, the fish that live there and the wildlife living nearby.

These changes introduce less comprehensive envi-ronmental assessment laws which give broad decision making powers to both the federal cabinet and ministers - all with much less account-ability and less opportunity for public input and/or par-ticipation. What worries me the most, I guess, is that the fact things like the closure of the Experimental Lakes Area research facility in On-tario, which was in the news for a while and then more or less disappeared from the radar (so to speak), seem to be but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the kinds of changes that are being ini-tiated by the federal govern-ment. What other changes are planned or already in the process that we don’t know about? What’s this old coun-try of ours coming to … what’s it going to look like down the road … what’s our government going to sneak through with its next omni-bus bill?

The HST is gone, finally.And while Premier Christy Clark didn’t miss

the opportunity to remind voters that the harmo-nized sales tax had been beneficial to the film industry, manufacturers and other businesses that received input tax credits, the politicking rang a little hollow.

The fact is that the HST – good or bad – became more than a tax. Historically, it will be seen as a symbol of everything that went wrong with the Liberal government since being granted its last mandate in 2009. It’s fact that former premier Gordon Campbell went to the polls last election stating he was not considering adopting an HST. It’s also fact that within weeks of being elected, the Liberals were rolling out plans for the HST.

A significantly large segment of the electorate evidently didn’t believe the message – or the timeline. They concluded they had been deceived. Even some of the staunchest Liberals were forced to admit they had done a horrible job of selling the HST, especially after oppo-nents gathered sufficient votes to call for a refer-endum.

There may have been many good reasons for an HST, but mishandling killed it, virtues, faults and all. And the writing is on the wall for which-ever party forms the next government, should they choose to read it.

A mandate to govern is not a signal for hubris, or over-confidence bordering on contempt for public opinion. It is not a blanket approval for anything a government decides to introduce. It is not an indication that democratic process is sus-pended, that questions won’t be asked, or that a docile public has gone to sleep for the next four years. Let’s hope future governments learn the lesson.

ket News there was an article about John Mcleod, a retired local farmer promoting agri-culture in the area, with Coun. Ken Jamieson saying it is suggested that it should be a pil-lar of the new college, which I totally agree with.

I think one of our next steps should be to tie the college to the new

treatment plant, which I understand could be happening soon, and use the methane gases to power and heat up greenhouses to produce fresh food all year.

Perhaps we could ob-tain provincial and fed-eral money to promote the project as it will be very environmentally friendly. A lot of this technology is already being used.

I have a nephew who works at a 100-acre greenhouse site in Delta, where hothouse tomatoes are grown to supply all of western Canada and some of the States. All the heat for the greenhouses comes from water cooling electrical generators producing electricity, which run off methane gas from an old land- fill.

This is the kind of technology that we should be promoting and working on at the new college. The col-lege should also be giving courses in the summertime on envi-ronmentally friendly backyard gardening or greenhouses which could then be promoted throughout the Interior.

My Ottawa office re-ceives approximately 15,000 emails per year. No, not all of them are from constituents. Most are internal com-munications, but we do receive many from con-stituents and they get answered. I keep track of the issues you raise and respond, in my col-umns, to concerns that are of interest to you.

I have received many emails regarding the protection of polar bears. Polar bear hunt-ing is illegal in Canada,

with the exception of the Inuit who have a constitutional right to hunt polar bears. Re-ports from the Nunavut Department of Environ-ment show the number of polar bears actually increasing to a 20-year high and the polar bear habitat recovering. In Antarctica, the sea ice started growing early this year, and the ice cover remains above average. The global sea ice of both polar caps now exceeds the average recorded since 1979, when satellites began their measure-ments.

According to the Danish Meteorologi-cal Institute, tracking Arctic temperatures since 1958, arctic ice has made a comeback, and arctic temperatures have returned to normal lows.

‘sky is falling syn-drome’ has actually proven to be just a knee -jerk reaction to a cycli-cal spike in temperature over the past couple of decades, which has now turned back to normal, that is, whatever is nor-mal in the history of weather patterns. My brother lives close to the Arctic Circle and yes, this is true.

Your government in Ottawa provided $150 million to monitor wild-life, the natural habitat, and the overall health of

Canada’s polar regions. This funding was a re-sponse to concerns of not only Arctic warm-ing, but also to prepare guidelines for any fu-ture development that might take place in the Arctic. Your govern-ment has expanded and increased the number of Arctic park reserves.

Your government in Ottawa will continue to monitor the health of our natural environment and wildlife so that it will be as breathtaking tomorrow as it is today.

PROPOSED: SOUTH SHUSWAP OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN AMENDMENT (SHUSWAP LAKE ESTATES) BYLAW NO. 700-71 AND

SOUTH SHUSWAP ZONING AMENDMENT (SHUSWAP LAKE ESTATES) BYLAW NO. 701-71

TAKE NOTICE that in accordance with the Local Government Act the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (“Regional District”) will hold a PUBLIC HEARING regarding proposed South Shuswap Official Community Plan Amendment (Shuswap Lake Estates) Bylaw No. 700-71 and South Shuswap Zoning Amendment (Shuswap Lake Estates) Bylaw No. 701-71.

The Board of Directors of the Regional District has delegated the public hearing to Director Paul Demenok as Director of Electoral Area ‘C’, being that in which the land concerned is located, or Alternate Director Arnie Payment if Director Paul Demenok is absent. At the public hearing those persons who believe their interest in property is affected by the proposed bylaws will have a reasonable opportunity to be heard or to present written submissions respecting matters contained in the bylaws. The Board of the Regional District will not consider any verbal or written representations or submissions after the public hearing. Please be advised that written submissions received will be available to the public and the applicant. Written submissions will be received in the Regional District Offices until 4 p.m. on Tuesday April 16th, 2013 or may be submitted until the close of the public hearing.

LOCATION AND DATE OF HEARING: The public hearing will be held on Tuesday April 16th, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Shuswap Lake Estates Banquet Facility (Downstairs), 2405 Centennial Drive, Blind Bay, BC.

The owner has applied to amend South Shuswap Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 700 and the South Shuswap Zoning Bylaw No. 701 to facilitate a mixed use development including a seniors residence in Blind Bay. The proposed development consists of approximately 75 multiple family dwelling units and 74 dwelling units as single family dwellings or duplexes. The minimum parcel sizes proposed are smaller than what is currently permitted in existing zones.

The densities proposed are 75 dwelling units per ha for the multiple family dwellings and between 17 and 18 dwelling units per hectare for the single family dwellings and duplexes. The average density for all uses on both properties is 29 dwelling units per hectare.

PURPOSE OF BYLAW NO. 700-71:

Bylaw No. 700-71 proposes to amend Schedule B (Land Use Map) of the South Shuswap Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 700 by redesignating Lot 2, Sections 7 and 8, Township 22, Range 10, West of 6th Meridian, Kamloops Division Yale District, Plan KAP79111 and Lot 1, Section 8, Township 22, Range 10, West of 6th Meridian, Kamloops Division Yale District, Plan KAP79111 from MDR MEDIUM DENSITY RESIDENTIAL to SH SPECIAL HOUSING.

PURPOSE OF BYLAW NO. 701-71:

Bylaw No. 701-71 proposes to amend Schedule A the South Shuswap Zoning Bylaw Text by adding a new zone, CD3 Comprehensive Development Zone 3. The CD3 Zone consists of four Development Areas.

Development Area 1 would allow for multiple family dwelling, special care facility and accessory use as permitted uses. The minimum parcel size for subdivision would be 1 hectare, and a density of 75 dwelling units per hectare if community sewer and community water services are provided.

Development Area 2 would allow for single family dwellings, home business and accessory use as permitted uses. The minimum parcel size for subdivision would be 340 m² if community sewer and water services are provided and 1 hectare in all other cases, and a maximum of 21 dwelling units within Development Area 2.

Development Area 3 would allow for single family dwellings, duplexes,

home business and accessory use as permitted uses. The minimum parcel sizes for subdivision would be 340 m² if community sewer and water services are provided and 1 hectare in all other cases, and a density of 1 single family dwelling or duplex per parcel, and a maximum of 53 dwelling units within Development Area 3.

Development Area 4 would allow for open space and passive recreation as permitted uses and the minimum parcel sizes for subdivision would be 1400 m² if community sewer and water services are provided and 1 hectare in all other cases.

Bylaw No. 701-71 also proposes amending Schedule C, Zoning Maps, which forms part of the South Shuswap Zoning Bylaw No. 701 by:

Rezoning Lot 2, Sections 7 and 8, Township 22, Range 10, West of 6th Meridian, Kamloops Division Yale District, Plan KAP79111 from R2 MEDIUM DENSITY RESIDENTIAL to CD3 COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT ZONE 3 and rezoning Lot 1, Section 8, Township 22, Range 10, West of 6th Meridian, Kamloops Division Yale District, Plan KAP79111 from R2 MEDIUM DENSITY RESIDENTIAL to CD3 COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT ZONE 3.

The above description of the purpose and effects of Bylaw No. 700-71 and 701-71 are only general. The bylaws may have an impact on property owners and tenants in occupation within the area. It is therefore important for all property owners to inform themselves fully as to the nature and effect of the bylaws.

Margaret Thatcher was the woman who be-gan the shift to the right that has affected almost all the countries of the West in the past three decades.

Thatcher was 87 when she died in Lon-don on Monday, April 8, 34 years after she became Britain’s first female prime minister and 23 years after she was driven from office.

It is an open ques-tion whether the crash of 2008 and the ensu-ing prolonged reces-sion have finally ended the reign of her ideas in Western politics.

“This woman is head-strong, obstinate and dangerously self-opin-ionated,” wrote some minion in the personnel department of British chemical giant ICI, re-jecting young Margaret Roberts’s application for a job as research chemist in 1948.

She was fresh out of Oxford University, 23 years old, brimming with self-confidence and absolutely full of opinions. She probably frightened the job inter-viewer half to death.

But, she landed a job with a plastics company in Colchester in 1949. She joined the Conser-vative party and stood for Parliament in the 1950 election (she was the youngest candidate

ever) and married busi-nessman Denis Thatch-er in 1951.

Margaret Thatcher, as she then became, finally made it into Parliament in the 1959 election.

She entered the cabi-net of Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath in 1970 as the “statutory female” (as he gallantly put it). But, she had the last laugh in 1975, replacing Heath as party leader after the Conservatives lost the 1974 election. She took a very hard line from the start, both in domes-tic and in foreign poli-tics. Her open hostil-ity to the Soviet Union led a Soviet newspaper in 1976 to dub her the “Iron Lady,” a title in which she revelled.

Her real impact, how-ever, was in British do-mestic politics, where she broke the welfare-state consensus that had dominated all the major parties for 30 years.

“It is our duty to look after ourselves,” she said — and the political orthodoxy trembled be-fore her onslaught.

An American dip-lomat in London, in a confidential assessment of the new Conservative leader in 1975, captured the essence of Thatch-er’s revolutionary poli-tics. She was, he wrote, the “genuine voice of a beleaguered bour-geoisie, anxious about its eroding economic power and determined to arrest society’s seem-ingly inexorable trend towards collectivism.”

That was what car-ried her into office in the 1979 election and, as prime minister, she acted on her convic-tions. After she had

fought and won the Falklands War against long odds in 1982, her popularity was unas-sailable and she used it to break the power of the trade unions and privatize state-owned industries.

More than that, she made free-market ideol-ogy for all intents and purposes the state reli-gion.

So it remained for 30 years, long after her harsh and confron-tational style had lost her the support even of her own party. She was ousted as Conservative leader and prime min-ister by her own col-leagues in 1990, but the Labour governments from 1997 to 2010 were also in thrall to her ideas. Their influence abroad, particularly in the United States, was equally great.

Yet her greatest con-tribution to politics, and the foundation of the right’s political success over recent decades, was not ideological, but tactical.

She was the first poli-tician to grasp the fact that with the decline of the old working class, it had become pos-sible to win elections on a platform that sim-ply ignored the wishes and needs of the poor. There weren’t as many

of them as there used to be — and the poor-est among them usually failed to vote at all.

This insight was key to the success of Presi-dent Ronald Reagan in the United States in the 1980s and to the triumph of conservative parties in many Europe-an countries in the same period. It continues to be a major factor in the calculations of parties both on the right and on the left down to the present day — you can-not count on the poor to win an election for you.

Thatcher was made a baroness after she re-linquished her seat in the House of Commons in 1992. She continued to sit in the House of Lords until ill health forced her to withdraw from public life entirely in 2002

In her last years, she suffered from dementia and finally succumbed to a stroke on Monday, April 8.

Her influence lives on, at least for the mo-ment, but it may not last much longer.

The powerful mid-dle class on which she founded her political strategy has been hol-lowed out by the very success of the free-mar-ket policies she promot-ed. Once you allow for the effects of inflation,

average middle-class income in the United States, for example, has not grown at all in the past three decades.

The time may be coming when gaining the votes of the poor, including the growing numbers of the “new poor,” will once again be essential to win elec-tions.

These services could range from transporta-tion to appointments, house-cleaning, mi-nor repairs or even a friendly visit. But which type of these Better at Home ser-vices or other services are needed in Salmon Arm?

It’s important for the Salmon Arm com-munity to talk about what are the main is-sues to keep seniors’ living longer in their own homes. Also, to know which services and programs are cur-rently offered and who provides them.

If you want to learn more about “Better at Home” and have the opportunity to share

People downsize for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it’s out of necessity. Often health or financial reasons require that a smaller, simpler residence is necessary. Sometimes it just makes sense to move to a smaller home. You may come to the realization that the effort to manage a large family home or acreage can be a big hassle and a lot of work to maintain. If you’d rather be out with friends or travelling to exotic locations, a big backyard full of fallen leaves, dandelions, or a driveway full of snow and ice may be too much to handle.

Whether you are experiencing changes in your life due to employment, family or health, it’s never an easy process to let go of your familiar surroundings even when you know it may be time to move on. For seniors, it can be even more difficult because of the memories associated

with their home and the accumulation of things that have emotional meaning. Still, as life requires constant adaptation to change, downsizing can also be a very liberating and progressive experience too.

With modern technology, images of our momentos can be easily stored for reference long after that item has been passed on to another family or collector.

Here are a few tips that can help when preparing to downsize.

1) Select a comfortable new residence and take measurements of your new living space. Ask for a printed layout of the new residence so you can decide what fits in there and where to place it. Most modern facilities have enough room to live comfortably with all your essential items.

2) Get help. Invite help from a loved one, friend or family member.

Ask them to gently keep you focused and encourage you to let go while honouring the departing items.

3) Sort the items into two basic categories. First category are things you really use often. Second category are things you seldom use, if at all. Easy things to define are duplications – if the new facility already has a toaster oven, you don’t need to bring one.

4) You and your team can decide ahead of time the criteria for sorting through your belongings. Once you have separated items into “need” and “don’t need”, it’s time to separate the items further into categories such as: a. Give to family or friends b. Sell, auction, donate to charity, c. Throw out

5) As you are sorting: designate someone to

track the items. Where are they now? Place each sorted item in a separate room. Write the item on a list with a sorted code (e.g. give to son, give to church, sell at auction, give to museum).

6) Use technology. Ask a friend to photograph or video the special items as they are sorted. The photos can be referenced later for sentimental or educational reasons.

7) Be patient. Work through the items systematically. One room at a time is best. Finish one box or closet before moving on. Keep it organized and take time to reminisce. It’s a form of respect and a time for closure. Breath as you let go. Take breaks. If you have the time, set a pace that is manageable.

8) Once the items are sorted, celebrate by inviting individuals to receive their gift

from you. Explain why the item is important to you. Ask them to respect your wishes and receive it with care. Once the special items have been distributed, invite a local charity to go through the remaining items before throwing it out.

9) The rest is easy, many seniors residences or community groups offer moving services. People who are strong and able to help move the items for you.

10) Celebrate! Letting go of personal items can be difficult at first but, like spring cleaning, it can be the beginning of a fresh start. They say the universe abhors a vacuum. As we let go of one item, the opportunity to fill that space with new experiences and adventures will present itself. The more we practice letting go, the easier it gets.

How the Shuswap was settled

Prior to 1896, there were few permanent settlers in the Shuswap. Other than the early formed settlements in Chase, Westwold (Grande Prairie), For-tune’s Landing (Ender-by) and Sicamous, most of the Shuswap was still vacant land, except for the small Indian re-serves. With the elec-tion of Canadian Prime Minister Wilfred Lau-rier, a settlement cam-paign began – called “the last Best West,” named because, by then, most of the best land in the U.S. had al-ready been settled. This campaign led to, first a trickle, and then a flood, of settlers moving.

From 1896 until 1905, Canadian immi-gration was under the responsibility of Clif-ford Sifton, who was the minister of the In-terior. Sifton instituted a massive program to encourage settlement through the establish-ment of immigration of-fices throughout Europe and the United States. Many different forms of advertising were used, including newspaper ads, brochures and post-

ers that portrayed Can-ada as a prosperous na-tion with rich farmland in need of farmers. The benefits of moving to Canada were touted at agricultural fairs and at schools, and journalists were given free tours to write about.

Sifton also offered attractive incentives, in-cluding in some cases, free passage to Canada, free supplies to new immigrants, and most importantly, up to 160 acres of free farmland. Immigration agents were taken off their sal-aries and were required to work for commis-sions, and steamship companies were offered bonuses for each new immigrant. Pamphlets, filled with glowing de-scriptions of the rail-way, bountiful amounts of arable land and the scenery were printed in dozens of languages and distributed through-out Europe. However, negative information was omitted, such as the cold Canadian win-ters and the difficulties encountered in clearing land.

Given the prejudices of the times, the cam-paign focused on en-ticing immigrants from either the United States or Europe, while blacks and Orientals were dis-couraged from coming. Sifton was primarily interested in developing agriculture in the West, so most of the efforts went to attracting immi-grants from rural Brit-ain, Germany, as well

as eastern European and Scandinavian countries. To facilitate homestead-ing, Sifton increased the surveying of the west-ern lands and he pres-sured the railway com-panies to free up their land grant properties to make these available.

A number of other factors contributed to a huge wave of immigra-tion. Most important was the growing in-ternational market for agricultural goods, par-ticularly hard wheat and other grains.

Many Europeans were suffering from hardships due to a troubled economy, in-dustrial pollution, high unemployment and, in Ireland, the potato fam-ine. Canada offered the chance for a better life for both the lower class-es, who had limited op-tions for the future, and even the wealthy, who were attracted to the op-portunities for investing in new businesses.

Sifton’s program was an enormous suc-cess as more than one million immigrants came to Canada be-tween 1896 and 1905, with approximately 50 percent settling in rural areas. Within a decade, the population of the west increased from 300,000 to 1.5 million. This immigra-tion boom changed the face of the Shuswap, as settlements and farms became established in the North and South Shuswap, Salmon Arm, Malakwa and through-

out the Shuswap River valley. Most of these new settlers were either from the United States, Great Britain and Scot-land, as eastern Euro-peans primarily settled in the Prairies. A few communities, including White Lake and Mal-akwa attracted settlers from Scandinavia.

The Shuswap was particularly attractive to younger British men from upper or middle class families, who were not the first born and thus unlikely to inherit the family prop-erty or business. Some of these immigrants were called “remittance men” because they re-ceived a regular stipend from their families. In some cases, these men were also the “black sheep” of their families because of their drink-ing problems or other

lifestyle habits.My fascination with

local history stems in part to the parallels be-tween the lives of the early settlers and my own early days in the Shuswap spent carv-ing a “homestead” out of the bush without power or running wa-ter. As I fled a nation obsessed with an un-just war to live off the land, so too did many of the pioneers leave their problem-plagued countries and endured hardships to build their homesteads with simi-lar goals of self-reliance and healthy living.

And just as the Ca-nadian government promoted immigration to settle the West well over 100 years ago, so too did Canada foster the entry of adventur-ous war resisters some 40 plus years ago.

Stockwell Day sees next month’s provin-cial election as “the most important elec-tion in B.C. in the last 50 years.”

And the former fed-eral cabinet minister has thrown his support behind the incumbent Liberals.

“I want it (elec-tion) to be something that’s going to produce positive results for my kids, my grandkids and opportunity for the future,” said Day, who was in Vernon and Salmon Arm Tuesday showing support for Liberal riding candi-dates Eric Foster and Greg Kyllo.

“That will happen with the policies of the B.C. Liberals. It can’t happen with NDP eco-nomic policy.”

Day served a num-ber of federal cabinet portfolios when he rep-resented the riding as MP of Okanagan-Co-quihalla, based out of Penticton. Those port-folios included public safety, international trade and the minister responsible for B.C. He was also president of the treasury board.

Today, he runs his own consulting busi-ness, sits on a number of boards around the country, does non-

pro� t work and helps businesses looking for Asian-Paci� c opportu-nities.

“Those opportunities will increase with the B.C. Liberals, they’ll fade away with NDP policies,” said Day, who said he was not getting a dime from the Liberals for his sup-port.

“I am a 100 per cent volunteer.”

With the election a month away, the Liber-als are trailing the NDP in the polls.

Day said the only poll that matters is the one on election day.

“I put my con� dence in individual citizens,” he said. “I hope they’ll view the proposals be-fore them and realize it’s the B.C. Liberals

that will provide the best hope and opportu-nity for the future.

“All parties have positives and strengths. Our positive is our pre-mier (Christy Clark) and policies that have been proven to give B.C. one of the best economies in North America. All of that will be lost with NDP policies.”

Asked about the

B.C. Conservatives, Day said the party is well-intentioned, but “they will serve to split the vote.”

“They may take a few percentage points off in each riding which may, in fact, help the NDP get elect-ed by default,” he said.

The province has re-sponded to two Colum-bia Shuswap Regional District resolutions that were endorsed by the Union of British Columbia Municipali-ties in 2012.

While the resolution on invasive species received a positive re-sponse, a Ministry of Justice response to ru-ral policing concerns offered nothing new.

“It’s always nice to get follow-up on reso-lutions we advance through UBCM, but the responses are somewhat predict-able,” says Charles Hamilton, CSRD’s chief administrative officer, noting he was pleased to see the prov-ince taking a proactive approach on invasive species like quagga and zebra mussels, but “underwhelmed” by the justice ministry’s response to rural polic-ing issues.

The ministry advises the RCMP has been conducting a study on models of police ser-vice to ensure compli-ance with the Canada Labour Code and listed the criteria used in al-locating resources.

“Given the fluid na-ture of policing, the RCMP, in conjunction with the provincial government, consis-tently monitors and reviews resources and redeploys accordingly

in order to prevent and reduce crime in B.C. communities,” reads the provincial re-sponse.

“It’s not a question of whether or not they re-allocate resources, because where in the province do they need less policing?” asks Kevin Keane, Salmon Arm RCMP Detach-ment staff sergeant. “The real issue is, in-creased boots on the ground and increased visibility are what we need.”

The local detach-ment provides service to the City of Salmon Arm and a large part of the Shuswap with only 19 officers paid for by the city and six covered by the province – to provide 24-hour ser-vice with back-up, at-tend mandatory train-ing, appear in court, have leave, holidays and maternity or pater-nity leave.

“I have been told we’re (RCMP) South-east District’s priority for more resources,” says Keane. “But, at the end of the day, the province has said there will be no money for new positions.”

Hamilton says, as local government, the regional district is well aware of restraint and making difficult finan-cial choices.

“But underlining our resolution was the ‘don’t focus all your energies on urban po-

licing,’” he says. “Cer-tainly there is a need in rural areas to access police service and we want to ensure the di-vision is fair and equi-table.”

Hamilton gave the province’s response on the regional district’s request for immediate measures to protect B.C.’s lakes a better grade.

“They are recogniz-ing the seriousness of invasive species and are contemplating leg-islation or regulations to prohibit or control their entry into the province,” he says.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources ad-vised it has proposed amendments to the Controlled Alien Spe-cies Regulation that will prohibit the pos-session, transport or breeding of listed spe-cies…and enable con-servation officers and other law enforcement staff to stop, inspect and impound mussel-fouled boats.

The province is also working with the fed-eral government to have quagga and zebra mussels added to the Federal Aquatic Spe-cies Regulation.

This will prohibit the importation of live mussels into Canada and enable Canada Border Services Agen-cy to stop mussel-fouled boats from en-tering the country.

The Kamloops Fire Centre is asking the public to exercise cau-tion with any outdoor burning activities this spring.

As the snow melts, dried grass from last summer is uncovered and that material can be highly flammable. Almost all wildfires at this time of the year are caused by people and are therefore prevent-able.

Homeowners and in-dustry personnel are en-couraged to consult the B.C. FireSmart manual and take the following precautions:

• Ensure that enough people, water and tools are on hand to control the fire and prevent it from escaping.

• Do not burn dur-ing windy conditions. Weather conditions can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires.

• Create a fireguard at least one metre around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material.

• If you are planning a large burn, consider conducting smaller

burns around the pe-rimeter beforehand to create a fuel break and help stop the fire from spreading beyond its intended size. Each of these fires should be kept small and must be completely extin-guished before starting a new fire.

Work is progressing on the new Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union building, with doors expected to open in August.

Michael Wagner, chief executive officer, says he expects a grand opening to take place in the second or third week of September.

“It’s progressing very well. We’re pretty much on time and under budget.”

He said the building will utilize a number of green technologies, including a green roof featur-ing trays of lichen and the recycling of water for irrigation.

“We’re very, very excited about it.” About 30 staff in total will work at the new lo-

cation, 12 of them moving up from the downtown site, which is running out of room. The branch will allow the credit union to expand its market-ing and information technology. Included at the uptown location will be support functions such as ATM balancing and servicing, payment systems and administrative services. There will also be in-surance staff and two financial planners.

“It will be a pretty good sized, full-service branch,” Wagner remarked.

On March 16 at 1:30 p.m., the Kelowna RcMP

responded to a complaint of a possible fraud.

A man wearing an Id card and stating that he

was collecting donations on behalf of the Ron-

ald Mcdonald House charity had apparently just

taken money from a resident with the use of a por-

table debit device.

The resident immediately phoned Ronald Mc-

donald House and was advised that this was an

ongoing scam. She provided police with a de-

scription and the suspect was taken into custody a

short distance away. This story is strikingly simi-

lar to the reports from Salmon Arm.

The man was identified as James Alexander

Graham, who is known to police and remains in

custody to appear in court on Tuesday, March 19.

neighbourhood inquiries indicated that Graham

had canvassed the area and there were further vic-

tims. Subsequent investigation also revealed that

this may be the tip of the iceberg, with more than

47 victims in just a few days in both Kelowna and

Salmon Arm.

On the weekend of March 2 and 3, a number of

residents in the lakeview Meadows subdivision

were targeted. The scam continued into the next

week at various locations in the city, with local

RcMP issuing a public warning about the charity

credit skimming scam.

Graham has been charged with four counts each

of fraud under $5,000, theft under $5,000, imper-

sonation and using false pretences. More charges

may be recommended pending further investiga-

tion.RcMP are advising people that may have been

a victim of this scam to call the Salmon Arm de-

tachment, and report any compromised credit

cards to your financial institution.

City to add stop signs

Royal Canadian Air Cadet 222 Shuswap Squadron participated in the combined ca-det (army, air and sea) marksmanship pro-vincials at the Vernon Army Base on Satur-day, April 6.

The competition consists of shooting at a total of 60 targets from 10 metres (30 feet) with a Daisy air rifle (pellet gun).

The 222 Shuswap Squadron participated as a team against the top teams and indi-vidual shooters from across the province.

Teams consisted of five members with a minimum of two ju-nior shooters (under 15 years old) on each team.

As a team, 222 Shus-wap had a respectable showing out of the 13 teams, with a total of 65 shooters on teams and 12 individual shooters. The team competition was won by Army Cadet Corps 2812 from Surrey. The highest possible score was 380 for each shooter.

Forty targets each were shot at by lying on the floor, which counted for 90 per cent of a shooter’s total

score, and then 20 tar-gets were shot at in the standing position and counted for 10 per cent of the total score.

Team members in-cluded: senior shooters Nicolas Parent (334.3), Rebecca Pikkara-inen (350.5) and ju-nior shooters Mikayla McKay (352.7), An-thony Geier (340.8), Rylie Schuetze (286.7) and spare Felix Plath.

Rebecca Pikkarain-en did extremely well in this is her first year shooting.

Mikayla McKay placed fourth in the junior division, with the winner being Or-essa Mathers-Cyr from Comox with a score of 358.3.

The overall high score was shot by Kev-in Fierling from Army Corps 2812 from Sur-rey with a score of 367.9.

The top team and the top-five individual shooters from each province advance to the Cadet National Marksmanship Cham-pionships, which take place May 4 and 5 in St. Catherines, Ont.

The squadron ap-preciates range coach Ed Parent who has coached the 222 Shus-

wap Squadron team since September 2009 and assistant coach Lt. Jeff Carsience who has been with the team since September 2011. But Carsience moved from Salmon Arm in March for work rea-sons. Capt Justin En-glot stepped in to help just before the provin-cials.

Air Cadet Squadron 222 Shuswap meets every Wednesday at

South Canoe Centre at 5970 – 10th Ave. SE at 6:30 p.m. Youth between the ages of 12 and 18 are welcome to join at any time. The squadron also requires adult officers to help administer the cadet program. Officers in the cadet program be-come part of the Cana-dian Forces Reserves in a special branch called the Cadet In-structor Cadre.

The Village of Chase was able to obtain the permit required to carry out construction on the wharf; however a few minor stipulations were included.

While the village will not need to resort to the use of a barge to com-plete the work on the Memorial Park wharf, it does need to alter procedures to ensure the lake bottom and the body of water itself are not impacted.

The procedures in-clude that any work to be done by a machine off the lake bottom where there is currently no water, must have rubber tires.

The other stipulation directed that the work-ers drive the crane out on wooden mats in the water as to ensure there would be no damage caused by the crane be-ing in the water itself.

The work on the wharf continues to progress, with a new cap being installed on the boat ramp Tuesday.

It was noted at Tues-day’s council meeting that a pole will be in-stalled in front of the wharf with the intention of keeping vehicles off.

Coun. Rick Berrigan said the fire department already gets called out for bikes which fall off the end of the wharf, and he highly doubts they want calls for ve-hicles that experience

the same fate.The village had re-

ceived some letters complaining about the messy state of the beach surrounding the area where construction is taking place.

Some noted the burning of scraps to be a problem, stating it would leave behind old nails and other sharp pieces of metal. The letters pointed out that the beach is highly pop-ulated in the summer, and such objects could cause harm if stepped on while hidden along the shore or the beach itself.

Another concern was that nails would be covered up by the lake when the water rises, causing danger to un-

suspecting swimmers.Since this issue was

brought up to coun-cil, the area has been cleaned up.

Joni Henrich, chief administrative officer, says she understands

the concerns, acknowl-edging the popularity and use of the area.

Burning of scraps is no longer taking place on the beach, with all garbage being removed from the area.

Does the Village of Chase have any con-trol over what items get burned in the VLA Road area and the methods used to do so?

Coun. Steve Scott raised this question at Tuesday’s council meeting, noting the vil-lage provides � re pre-vention for the area.

The answer is “no,” according to Fire Chief Brent Chamberlain. Though the � re depart-ment responds to any � res in the area, it is up to the Thompson-Nic-ola Regoinal District (TNRD) to regulate what people are able to burn, and specify how it’s done.

Chamberlain says it has been an issue in the past, and has been looked into; however, they have discovered the TNRD does not have any set guidelines regarding the matter, leaving their hands tied.

Coun. Rick Berrigan says it could be an issue that council may ap-proach the TNRD with.

Drugs targetedChase RCMP Sgt.

Gary Heebner provided council with an update on recent police activity in the area.

Along with roadside check stops and inves-tigations into a number of breaks and enters, police have been as-sisting with fundraisers for the Chase Hamper Society.

The local of� cers have also been lending a hand to the youth ac-tion society, viewing it as a great initiative for youth in the area.

Heebner said raids on three separate residenc-es back in November resulted in a number of arrests along with the seizure of drugs and weapons.

“Drugs continue to be an issue throughout the entire detachment

area,” says Heebner, adding police are cur-rently working on war-rants targeting some of this illegal trade.

The Chase jail cell is currently visited by two weekend prisoners. While this is not much, Heebner said it does require extra guards to work the weekend.

Utility billsCouncil announced

the year’s � rst water utility bills will be is-sued today (Friday). This will allow users in the area to get a � rst look at the recent price hikes. Council also dis-cussed the possibility of changing bill distri-bution back to a twice-a-year process, freeing up administration to in-vest their time in other projects. This possibil-ity is still being looked into and no decision has

been made at this time.

Band relationsThe municipality

has received an invita-tion to join the Adams Lake Indian Band once a month for a meeting.

While it was un-known whether this of-fer was for all of coun-cil, or just Coun. David Lepsoe, the band’s liai-son, it will provide an opportunity to discuss matters of mutual inter-est.

The invitation allows Chase council 15 to 30 minutes to speak at the start of each meeting, scheduled at the begin-ning of every month.

Lepsoe had requested this opportunity, seeing it as a means to develop a stronger friendship and improve commu-nication between them. He noted previous meetings with the band had been very much hit and miss.

Chase council met with school board mem-bers Monday to discuss the empty Haldane An-nex and other matters of mutual interest.

Council asked a number of questions regarding the tennis courts. The board was interested in the proj-ect, but identified it as a pursuit for the school PAC (Parental Advisory Council). Both parties

agreed its completion is important.

Council was also concerned about the old Haldane Annex elemen-tary school, wondering what is to be done with the empty building.

Other areas, such as Clearwater, have been able to take what was formerly a school build-ing and lease the land for $1 a year. By pair-ing up with a non-profit

organization, they have been able to access grant money and turn the building into use-able space for the com-munity.

While procedures had prevented the mu-nicipality from taking on such an initiative in the past, it was suggest-ed these problems may no longer be an issue.

Joni Henrich says staff is looking at ways in which the municipal-ity can work with the school board, and put this empty space to use. She said that while the possibility of new of-fice space is intriguing, they would need to look at it more to figure out a plan.

Parking at schools was another issue raised by council.

As warmer weather approaches, Haldane Elementary school is preparing for their an-nual carnival, and would like to invite residents in the area to

attend. The event is set to take place May 16, from 5 to 8 p.m.

There is plenty of fun to be had through the silent auctions, basket raffle and dog fashion

show. Chris the Clown will also be in atten-dance to entertain the little ones, along with a bouncy castle. Conces-sions will be on hand to keep those hungry tum-

mies full. All the pro-ceeds from this event will go to the school for such things as sports equipment, field trips, updated electronics and more.

Government support for renova-tions of two Adams Lake Indian Band community buildings was awarded April 5 by Okanagan-Shuswap MP-Colin Mayes from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

Mayes, who made the announc-ment on behalf of Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Eco-nomic Diversification, expressed his approval of the improvements now set to occur.

“I am proud to see the Adams Lake Indian Band benefit from the Com-munity Infrastructure Improvement Fund,” said Mayes. “This investment will help create economic growth and will support the prosperity of the community for years to come.”

The federal government’s invest-ment of $11,650 will upgrade the band’s administration building and community resource centre with stained siding and a new roof. The fa-cilities are located in the heart of the

community and the renovations will allow the band to continue providing important resources for elders, youth and other band members.

“Adams Lake Indian Band is grate-ful for this contribution from the Gov-ernment of Canada, as well as for their continued support,” said Chief Nelson Leon. “Projects like this help build pride in our accomplishments, and ensure infrastructure facilities are available and accessible to our people.”

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infra-structure. The government commit-ted $150 million over two years for the fund. The fund supports projects that look to improve existing com-munity infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas and other community facilities.

It is with much grief and sadness that we announce the death of Anita Bouma at Kelowna General Hospital on April 1st 2013. She was a loving mother, a caring sister, consistent friend and a trusted colleague.

Born March 7th 1953 in Zoutkamp, Netherlands, she immigrated with her family to Canada at the age of 16. In 1975 she moved to Salmon Arm and began nursing at ShuswapLake General Hospital shortly after. Over a careerspanning more than 35 years, Anita took pridein her work and is remembered for her “warm, compassionate personality”. For so many people she will be remembered as the friendly face of thehospital and the woman who ensured patients and guests felt comfortable and kept the unit runningsmoothly.

She cultivated close, long-lasting friendshipsand was intentional in demonstrating her love. Through times of joy and times of sadness sheremained consistent to her friends. Her devotion, contentedness and empathy are qualities weadored and will always remember.

As a mother she was a source of inspiration, an ever-present guide and a role model. As a singlemother she raised Marcel with selfless love,providing him with a safe and nurturing home. Byher actions she demonstrated the importanceof faith, humility, kindness, hard work and activeliving. She seized every opportunity to celebratebirthdays, holidays and other milestones and made it abundantly clear that she loved and was proud of her son.

Anita was the oldest surviving sister and has foursiblings: Errit, Marga, Edith and Andrea. She valuedfamily and connectedness and loved bringingeveryone together. She was kind and forgiving toward her siblings and selfless when it came to caring for her parents. She deeply appreciated the support from her family and friends.

Anita lived an active life and would regularly walkfor hours in the evening, particularly with her closefriend Erica. She also enjoyed nature and had apassion for whale watching. In recent years she would camp on Malcolm Island, BC and could befound on the beach listening to the songs of theorcas.

We would like to invite you to join with us in celebrating Anita’s beautiful life at BroadviewEvangelical Free Church (350-30th St NE, SalmonArm BC) on Sunday April 14th 2013 at 2:00 p.m. There will be a reception following the celebration.In lieu of flowers or gifts donations can be madeto the AREA Fund (www.areafund.ca) for asbestosresearch, education and advocacy or BC Heart &Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.bc.ca).

It is with sadness that the family of Del announces her passing at Bastion Place, Salmon Arm, BC on Saturday April 06, 2013 at the age of 77 years.

Del was born in Edmonton AB on August 20, 1935, and adopted by loving parents Gwendolyn & Leonard Lewis. She is survived by sister Trudy Lewis, sister-in-law Merle Lewis, and five children: Daniel, Dawn, Denise, Douglas, and Stephanie as well as 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Del was an independent free spirit who loved learning, sharing, and serving her community. Shealso enjoyed her pets, crafts, Christmas, reading,canning, and especially listening to her scanner.

Del’s families and friends are invited to celebrate her life at the Canoe Senior Citizens hall (7330 – 49 Street NE) on Friday, April 12, at 4:30.

These two loving, creative, wonderful people will bemissed by all who knew them. Allan was born in Tuberose, Saskatchewan, on July 2, 1942. Hewas an avid cyclist , hiker, swimmer, camper, wood worker and master craftsman. Fay was born in Queensland, Australia on February 9th, 1946. Fay was an amazing cook and baker and washighly active in her community; dancing, playingtennis, and volunteering. Allan and Fay met in New Zealand and were married in Saskatchewan,October of 1969. They had a talent for creatinga home wherever they went and loved spending time with their children, grandchildren, family andfriends. Together they found happiness paddling on nearby lakes. They are survived by their sons,Graham and Jeffrey Allport, daughters-in-lawMegan Ross and Kara Uzelman, grandchildren Liam and Rory, and many, many other familymembers and friends around the world. In loving memory of Barbara Elizabeth Norris (Nee Bowes) – July 30, 1926 to March 29, 2013.

It is with deep sadness we announce the death of our mother, Betty. After battling a lengthy illness, Betty passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 29, 2013.

Predeceased by Cliff, her husband of 58 years who died in 2009, she is survived by her youngest brother, Alan, and her four children, Jeannie, Ellie, Wayne and Gordon.

Born to Mabel and Arthur Bowes in Viking,Alberta, she was one of six children including asister Audrey, and brothers, Jim, Arthur, Jack, and Alan. The family moved to Richmond, B.C whenshe was 10 years old.

At the age of 23 she and Cliff married, and shortlyafter moved to Kamloops, B.C. Cliff established a successful machinist business there. Raising fourchildren, they remained in Kamloops until retiring toSorrento, B.C. in 1975. They relocated to Parkside Estates in nearby Chase, B.C. in 2006. Since Cliff’s passing in 2009, Betty had remained at Parkside,living independently, until her own death.

Mom enjoyed socializing, made friends easily, andhad a wide circle of friends, some known for manyyears, others for only a few, and some perhaps justa little while. Although many are no longer with us,all had been most precious to her. Friendship wasone of the things she valued most of all.

Please join us on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 11am for a memorial service in her honor, to be held at St.Andrew’s Church, 845 Thompson Avenue, Chase B.C.

In lieu of flowers, we know mom would bepleased if donations were made to the nearestFood Bank.

We miss you so much, mom. Rest in peace.

Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Don passed away peacefully at Bastion Place, Salmon Arm, BC.

Predeceased by both parents, son Robert, and brother Conrad. Don started working for CP Telecommunications as a telegraph messenger at the age of 13, which led to a career which spanned 43 years.

Dad was a passionate collector of music andpostage stamps and will always be remembered byfriends and family as a cheerful gentleman with aninfectious laugh, and was considered as a ‘secondfather’ to many. Dad left us to go see the greatestjazz band ever assembled and to share the wonderof those sounds with the son he has missed sodearly.

Don and Marg have enjoyed many wonderfulyears in Sorrento on the beautiful Shuswap Lake.He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, sonsDon (Sandy), Rick (Michelle), Chris (Nicole), grandchildren Kyla, Dana, Richard, Steven, Randi,Andrew and Christine. Great grandchildren Finn,Calen, Maggie and Jackson. Also survived by loving nieces and nephews.

wife of Don Harden passed away on March 10th, 2013 at the age of 54 years at Salmon Arm, BC. Denise was born Nov. 5th, 1958 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. In May 1996 Don and Denise moved to Salmon Arm. Denise worked at Canadian Tire for the last 12 years and you may remember her for her outgoing and happy personality.

She will be dearly missed by Don, her only son Eric Smith and three step daughters Donna, Susan and Kathy Harden, as well as her large family ofbrothers and sisters.
