GET SET FOR SUMMER! with Surinder Bellamy

The evenings are getting lighter, the days are getting warmer and summer clothes are in the shops, so if you’re worried about getting back into that swimsuit, there’s still time to take action and burn off some bodyfat. But that means doing it properly – not crash-dieting. It also means working hard,. because losing weight and getting fit is hard work. However, the rewards are great!

There are three main elements of a good weight-loss programme that will help you build muscle, burn calories and stay healthy. These are cardiovascular exercise, strength training and a healthy eating plan that you can follow. Stretching would be incorporated into your cardio and strength work.

Before you start, it’s good idea to check with your doctor and get the all clear, especially for cardiovascular work, which takes your heart rate up and can impact on the joints. Once you’ve done that, then all that you need to get started is to set aside 30-60 minutes, 4-6 times a week. Put it into your diary or on your calendar and stick to it. Decide whether you’re going to do this first thing in the morning, in your lunch hour or in the evening - but you will need to stick to it. Once you’ve decided when to exercise, make sure you have a good pair of trainers, a sports bra (for the ladies) and loose, comfortable clothing.

To burn calories, you’ll need to do cardio for at least 30 minutes, 2-3 days each week. Choosing something you enjoy (or at least don’t mind) is more important than trying to make yourself do something you dislike. Intensity, duration and the type of activity is also something to keep in mind. Power-walking, jogging, and running are the same type of activity, but the intensity and impact varies greatly. Bear in mind also whether you can support your bodyweight for the required length of time, in which case consider swimming or cycling. There are so many activities to do – dancing, tennis, golf, and many other sports that include a social element or interaction with another person.

The second part of your programme will be strength training to build lean muscle and raise your metabolism and you should aim to do this 2-3 days in addition to cardio. Many people overlook the importance of strength (weight) training in a weight-loss programme and some women still believe that it will give them big muscles or that it is only for men. However the after-effects of

strength-training in burning calories last much longer than after doing cardio. This is because the body has to burn calories in repairing muscles. To burn the most calories use exercises that use big muscle groups and that are compound, bending at more that one joint.

Examples would be squats, lunges, push-ups, and pull-ups. An efficient way of burning calories is to work two body parts at the same time. i.e. lunges while

doing bicep curls

You will adapt to your exercise as your fitness improves, so it’s important to have the right eating plan. You must constantly aim to burn more calories than you eat so be prepared to make changes to your diet. Try to think in terms of health and nutrition and aim to eat from all of the food groups each day. These are complex carbohydrates, proteins, vegetables, fruits and dairy. It will help to remember the following -

Don’t skip meals and never skip breakfast! This ✦actually slows down your metabolism which means your body is burning fewer calories.

Drink more water. Staying hydrated stops you ✦feeling hungry and is important during and after exercise to replace lost fluid.

Watch your portion sizes. Many people eat quite ✦well, but they simply eat more than their bodies require. You can continue to eat the foods you like - just in smaller amounts.

Watch out for low-fat or light products in the ✦supermarkets as these can often be high in sugar.

Eat high fibre, low calories foods that can add ✦bulk to your diet and fill your plate like vegetables and most fruits.

With exercise and healthy activity, every little bit helps and doing something is always better than doing nothing, so get those trainers on and enjoy a fit and healthy summer!

Digital Switchover ARE YOU READY ?

asks Nick PrestonDigital switchover for the Meridian TV region is fast approaching and starts from: 8 Feb 2012 in your region

There are 10 transmitter groups in the Meridian TV region that will switch from analogue to digital TV at different times in 2012.

When you switch depends on which transmitter group you are watching. Following ITV restructuring, viewers in Oxford transmitter group (part of the Central TV region) receive the ITV Meridian news service.

All households with a Freeview TV or box will need to re-tune at both stages of switchover and from time to time to keep receiving channels and services.

What are the basic facts?Switching to digital is easy. There are several different ways of getting digital television, including satellite tv. If all you want to do is to convert your television and watch through an aerial, all you need is a digital box (sometimes called a set-top box).

If your aerial is in good condition and you get a clear analogue picture before the switchover, it should receive digital television without any difficulty. There is no such thing as a “digital” aerial—so don’t be persuaded to buy a new one unless you are sure your old one needs to be replaced.

If you get Channel5 now, you are probably receiving your signals directly from Meridian .You could probably get digital signals already, if you convert now. If you only have four channels now, you won’t be able to get digital television until the switchover in June, because your signals come from one of the relays, which will be converted from

analogue to digital at the switchover date.

At switchover, everyone will have to tune in or retune their digital television equipment to receive the new digital signals.

All viewers who watch tv through an aerial have to do this—even those who are already watching digital.

Retuning is easy. Switch on your tv and your digital box. Press the MENU button on the remote control. Select the SETUP or INSTALLATION menu and then select AUTO SET UP or UPDATE to re-tune the channels. Some tv’s and digital boxes will ask you for a code. If you haven’t already changed it this is usually either 0000 or 1234.

You will need to re-tune your equipment from time to time in the future too as channels are regularly updated.

Help for older people and those with disabilities?Everyone aged 75 and over and those with a severe disability, who receives or is entitled to receive disability living allowance or attendance allowance is entitled to special help with switchover. Those on Pension Credit, Income Support or income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance will not have to pay anything for this help.

Other eligible households will be asked to pay a small standard charge of £40 which will be a contribution towards the cost of all the necessary work including the provision and installation of the equipment and after-installation support to make sure it is working and the viewer knows how to work it.

The help scheme provides a number of different options for viewers to choose from. The standard offer is for the installation of a free-to-air satellite system from SkyTV, but other options include the provision and installation (if requested) of a digital box or the provision of an integrated digital television (on payment of the appropriate additional cost).

Page 7: Salisbury Local

7 • • COPY DATE FOR THE NEX T ISSUE – 15th JULY 2011 • •

The Help Scheme has sent options packs and more information to all eligible viewers. If you know of anyone who hasn’t received anything, or if anyone you know needs more information or advice call the Help Scheme direct on 0800 408 5901. They can also help with completing the application forms.

It’s an inform-AL approachTV viewers are already used to seeing the digital switchover robot —Digit Al — on their screens. Viewers in the Meridian transmission area will be getting information from Digital UK through their letterboxes too.

Leaflets giving advice about switching to digital have already been delivered to every home in the area. Look out for the advice booklet which will be delivered to every home around three months before the switchover. In addition, Digital UK is working with voluntary organisations and charities particularly those working with older and more vulnerable

people—to help spread the word about digital television switchover.

If you haven’t had a leaflet and would like one, call Digital UK on 08456 50 50 50.

EASY STRAWBERRY TORTEWith Wimbledon and Henley Regatta being held in the latter part of June, then a strawberry recipe is what’s required – Oh, and of course a Pimms! this recipe makes eight servings.

Ingredients with Ianian wooldridge, head chef,

along with Wendy Johnston, Patisserie Sectionat Kimbridge Farm,

near romseywith your Seasonal & Local Produce Recipe

1 200g ready-made sponge flan case500gms of strawberries, hulled50ml of masala wine or dark sweet

sherry

600ml of double cream500gms of mascarpone cheeseIcing sugar, sifted

Shopping list:

Method: Put the sponge flan case on a flat work surface. Place a 23cm (9 inch) springform tin on top of the flan and with a small, sharp knife, cut around it. Then, with a long, sharp knife, carefully cut through the sponge horizontally to give you two rounds of sponge. Place one half of the sponge neatly at the bottom of the tin and sprinkle with some (not all) of the masala wine, but not too much as to soak.

Next, cut the strawberries in half from top to bottom. Sit the strawberry halves

around

the inside edge of the tin with the middle of the strawberry facing outwards. Finely chop the remaining strawberries and set aside.

Now whip the cream until it forms soft peaks and then add the mascarpone. Mix well whilst adding the reserved diced strawberries and the remaining masala wine. Add icing sugar to your taste (normally around 3 tablespoons will be enough) and give the mixture a final stir.

Spoon the mixture onto the sponge keeping the strawberry halves in the upright position and up against the side of the tin. Smooth the top of mixture until

level. Now carefully place the other half of the sponge on top of

the levelled mixture.

Chill in the fridge for a least 4 hours or preferably overnight. Then release the spring from

the tin and lift off carefully. Smooth the sides of the torte and dust liberally with icing

sugar before serving.

I've always wondered why we leave our treasured cars worth

many thousands of pounds outside on the road all night while we fill up our garages with junk and lock them up.

Most of us hate to part with anything and according to website Netcycler who surveyed two thousand adults, most of us keep items because we don't know what to do with them.

I've got a collection of old mobile phones that I should send for recycling, but I just can't get round to doing it, they bring back so many memories. What do you do with all those old vinyl records, tapes and CDs? I've go them stacked away somewhere but I'll never play them again.

There are lots of recycling sites springing up on the internet now that give you the opportunity to "give away" your old junk to someone that can make use of it. Many of the sites are local and typing "freecycle" into your search engine usually finds your local site. So what am I waiting for??? I've got a cheese plant, remember them? It’s now reached the ceiling, but its been with us for twenty-five years and it become part of the family! I hope I can find a good home for it somewhere!

Hamptworth Golf and Country Club may not be big enough to host a European Tour event, let alone the Ryder Cup – but it is all set to stage croquet’s equivalent to the famous clash between America and Britain at the end of June.

Not many local residents will know that Hamptworth now boasts four lawns fit to stage croquet matches at the highest levels, including the Solomon Trophy, contested alternately by two teams from either side of “the pond” since 1988.

Great Britain won the first fourteen clashes against the USA, but the Americans will have the bit between their teeth when they arrive at Hamptworth for the four-day competition, starting on June 28, as the defending team for the first time.

The British team – which will be selected from the current UK rankings – will be hoping to stop the rot and regain the trophy when some of the best players in the world descend on this beautiful club on the edge of the New Forest.

The format of the Solomon Trophy, which is being sponsored by Rathbone’s, will see two teams of six competing in twenty-one matches, all the best of three. The first team collecting eleven wins from the twelve singles and nine doubles over the four days will claim the trophy.

There are some fifteen thousand players belonging to nearly six hundred clubs across the world, with more than two thousand tournament members of the Croquet Association based in the UK.

Hamptworth have been investing heavily in their facilities over the past eighteen months, with two new lawns being added to the original two opened when the club was founded back in 1994, along with a new pavilion. A fifth lawn is currently being laid so the club can host larger and more prestigious national and international competitions.

Hamptworth now has more than fifty croquet members with the new facilities helping to double the number of competitors competing in the club’s open competitions. Club president and founder member Richard Stevens said, “We are delighted to have been chosen to stage four prestigious events this summer, which will help put Hamptworth on the world croquet map. That was the goal behind building bigger and better facilities here. We would be delighted to see as many people – both players and non-croquet players – to come and watch leading international players compete on our wonderful lawns, find out more about the game and enjoy the club’s wonderful hospitality. We are particularly keen to show that there is nothing to stop people coming to Hamptworth if they want to have a go and find out if croquet is a game for them. Everyone has to start somewhere.”

Quiller Barrett, the president of UK’s Croquet Association, presided over the opening ceremony of the new lawns in May last year and two world-class players, Rutger Beijderwellen and David Maugham, took part in a demonstration match in front of a packed crowd.

Hamptworth’s progress has seen the Croquet Association also award the Wiltshire club The Peels, one of croquet’s oldest competitions, dating back to 1898 was held earlier this year. The tournament commemorates Walter Peel, an infant prodigy who won croquet’s Open Championship three times, the first when he was just twenty-one in

1868, before founding the game’s governing body in 1896. He died shortly after its first proper meeting a year later and two large silver bowls were given in his honour for a separate men’s and women’s handicap competition for Croquet Association members.

Mercedes-Benz are sponsoring the Solstice Cup, a doubles completion for members of the Southern Federation on Sunday June 19.

The Wiltshire Open Golf Croquet Championships are also being staged at Hamptworth, on July 9 and 10, when some of the top players from home and overseas will battle it out in a qualifier for the British Open Championship.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit Hampworth and see croquet at its highest level at any of these events.

Are South West Trains ‘off their trolley’?49-year-old Lymington Stationmaster Ian Faletto loved his job.

So much so that over the 27 years he’s been in the employ of the company now known as South West Trains, he’s worked his way up the company to become Stationmaster, in charge of three stations in the Lymington area.

His love of the job is plain for any of his passengers to see, he’d even paid for station flowers, heaters and carpets out of his own pocket.

So, when he spotted a shopping trolley dumped by yobs on the railway track one night recently, it shouldn’t surprise you to hear that he took it upon himself to get the power turned off, then removed it before the first train of the day arrived.

You’d have thought that his bosses would have given quick-thinking Mr. Faletto a medal.

What they gave him was his P45.

According to BBC South Today on Thursday evening, ‘South West Trains said in a statement, “An employee has been dismissed for a serious breach of safety. We do not take such decisions lightly, and the decision was upheld at an appeal hearing.”

Students have organised a facebook page, and there’s an online petition, organised by local vicar Alex Russell. She said, “Locals are shocked and horrified. South West Trains have sacked one of their best employees.”

An employment tribunal is now likely.’

Where’s the ‘Health and Safety’ in their decision to fire hapless Mr. Faletto?

Please log onto yoursoapbox.com and let this train network know your feelings on this.

Hopefully, together we can get Mr Faletto reinstated. And the idiot ‘Fat (-headed) Controller’ who made the decision sacked instead. Let us know if you, or anyone you know, have been affected by a ludicrous Health and Safety decision?

A Postman’s LotI'm waiting for the postman and again, I'm getting bored,I’ve had no deliveries lately and I feel I'm being ignored.

Nothing plops upon my mat; I make a worried call,A snooty voice replies "We don't deliver there at all,

Your roads are inconvenient; they're cobbled, steep and lumpy,Our postman soon runs out of puff; gets tired and very grumpy.

Your house is quite remote; we often lose it in the fog,Your guinea pig is violent and we don't much like your dog,

Your letter box is troublesome; it’s really far too low,

We can't expect our chap to put his head down by his toe,The last one too, was awkward it was sited far too high

Our postman stood on tiptoe; pulled a muscle in his thigh,

And your fuschia is too vigorous, it's overgrown and bushy. You mustn't think, from all of this, the life we want is cushy...but

We can't deliver mail to you; the risk is far too great,Please collect your letters straight away - they're three months out of date…”
