LIFE THOUGHT

Jesus says, “I have not come to bring peace, but a sword” (Matthew

10:34b). Advocating the sanctity of life may mean living on that edge. Of

course, Gospel grace and forgiveness aren’t for slaying adversaries but

setting captives free. It sometimes feels like merely fetching refreshments

(Matthew 10:42), but the reward of Gospel-motivated voices For Life is

receiving even the least of these neighbors as treasures.

PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP

O Lord, our creator, redeemer, and comforter, as we come together to

worship You in spirit and in truth, we humbly pray that You would open

our hearts to the preaching of Your Word so that we may repent of our

sins, believe in Jesus Christ as our only Savior, and grow in grace and

holiness. Hear us for His sake. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

P: In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our

sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus

Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor sinner, plead guilty before God of all sins. I have lived as

if God did not matter and as if I mattered most. My Lord’s name I

have not honored as I should; my worship and prayers have faltered.

I have not let His love have its way with me, and so my love for

others has failed. There are those whom I have hurt, and those whom

I have failed to help. My thoughts and desires have been soiled with

sin. I am sorry for all of this and ask for grace. I want to do better.

Silence to reflect on your need for a Savior.

P: God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith.

C: Amen.

P: Do you believe that my forgiveness is God’s forgiveness?

C: Yes.

P: Let it be done for you as you believe. In the stead and by the command

of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the

Father, and of the T Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen!

PSALM 119:153-160

P: Look on my affliction and deliver me,

for I do not forget your law.

C: Plead my cause and redeem me;

give me life according to your promise!

P: Salvation is far from the wicked,

for they do not seek your statutes.

C: Great is your mercy, O LORD;

give me life according to your just decrees.

P: Many are my persecutors and my adversaries,

but I do not swerve from your testimonies.

C: I look at the faithless with disgust,

because they do not keep your commands.

Page 5: Salem Lutheran Church and School€¦ · 28/06/2020  · But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law, sin

5

P: Consider how I love your precepts!

Give me life according to your steadfast love.

C: The sum of your word is truth,

and every one of your just and righteous decrees endures forever.

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray.

C: Almighty God, by the working of Your Holy Spirit, grant that we

may gladly hear Your Word proclaimed among us and follow its

OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 28:5-9

Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the

presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the

house of the LORD, and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the LORD

do so; may the LORD make the words that you have prophesied come

true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house

of the LORD, and all the exiles. Yet hear now this word that I speak in

your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who

preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and

pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the

prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to

pass, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE Romans 7:1-13

Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know

the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives?

Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives,

but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.

Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another

man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from

that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.

Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body

of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been

raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. For while

we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were

at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are released

from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve

not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had

not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have

known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”

But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in

me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was

once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin

came alive and I died. The very commandment that promised life proved

to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the

commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So the law is holy,

and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was

sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might

be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become

sinful beyond measure.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 10:34-42

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus said:] “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the

earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to

set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a

daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will

be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more

than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more

than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and

follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and

whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives

him who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a

prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a

righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a

righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones

even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he

will by no means lose his reward.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

NICENE CREED

C: I believe in one God,

the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth

and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds,

God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God,

begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father,

by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from

heaven

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary

and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried.

And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures

and ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living

and the dead,

whose kingdom will have no end.

Page 10: Salem Lutheran Church and School€¦ · 28/06/2020  · But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law, sin

10

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and

glorified,

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

SERMON HYMN: The Law of God Is Good and Wise (LSB 579)

5 The Law is good; but since the fall

Its holiness condemns us all;

It dooms us for our sin to die

And has no pow’r to justify.

6 To Jesus we for refuge flee,

Who from the curse has set us free,

And humbly worship at His throne,

Saved by His grace through faith alone.

elements will be by wafers placed into your hands and individual cups.

PREFACE LSB 160

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all

places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God,

through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation,

humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient

unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed

us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels

and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify

Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on

those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh

to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the

salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and

His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O

Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit.

Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in

His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the

earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in

His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver

and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship,

with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

C: Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples

and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in

remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had

given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup

is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the

forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of

Me.”
