PAGE 2 NOVEMBER 2019 NEWSLETTER

All Saints Day is soon upon us. That day is an occasion to remember and give thanks for

those who have touched us in many ways and have now gone on to their eternal home with

God. With the passing of some, we may feel regret because of unresolved places in our

relationship. With others, we simply miss their hugs, their smiling faces, their words of care

and concern. With still others we may feel sorrow and even relief because the relationship

was so broken that we were unable to navigate it in a way that was manageable on this side

of eternity. What to do with those broken, unresolved places in our lives that continue to

reverberate and affect us today?

I once went on a retreat with a leader who loved playing with words. A phrase he used that

particular retreat was “Healing memories.” That phrase could be understood two ways:

when we bring wonderful, loving memories to mind, they can heal a part of us that is in

pain; alternately, when we bring painful memories to mind, we can reflect on them and

allow God to do some healing work on the memories themselves. I have found that phrase

to be helpful as I sift through memories of friends and loved ones who have died. Some leave

beautiful imprints in my mind and they continue to inspire and instruct me. Others are

more complex, with twinges of regrets of things said and done or things left unsaid and

undone. When I come across those, I try to be still for a moment and hold that memory in

the light of God’s love. What wisdom do I have to share with my younger self? What would

the person say to me now? What is God’s gracious invitation to me in this moment?

How do I allow this to inform my words and actions in the future? Let mercy, forgiveness,

gentleness, peace, hope, and love guide you.

As we receive the graces God gives us through the “Communion of Saints” and “great cloud

of witnesses,” we will experience healing and wholeness in new and renewing ways. Let us

give thanks for the faithful (and not-so-faithful) people who have finished their earthly race

and yet continue to shape us more fully into the love of Christ.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Kristal

Christmas time will be here before you know it. Salem is again giving mem-

bers that are 80 + years old and members in nursing homes a gift from Sa-

lem. This year the people have a choice of a poinsettia plant, a store gift

card, or a certificate that they can use in the nursing home. The people of

Salem will have the opportunity to honor their family members by dedicat-

ing monies for these gifts either ‘in memory of’ or “in honor of’ their loved

ones. The cost is $5.00 per memorial.
