SEND IN YOUR BALLADS FOR HLDA’S 2011 POETRY CONTEST

2011 Guidelines

Submission Dates: May 1 through June 1 2011!

Entries received before May 1 or postmarked after June 1 will be sent back or discarded.

What

Students must submit a poem in the form of a ballad using one of the two book titles listed in their age category as inspiration for their poem. The book’s contents do not need to be included in the poem; students may simply use the title. Ballads are poems that tell a story, and are considered to be a form of narrative poetry. They are often used in songs and have a very musical quality to them. The core structure for a ballad is a quatrain, (four lines) written in either abcb or abab rhyme schemes. The first and third lines are iambic (metric foot which goes:unstressed/stressed) tetrameter, with eight beats per line; the second and fourth lines are in iambic trimeter, with six beats per line. Your ballad may be 4 to 8 stanzas long, and you may choose either one of the rhyme schemes listed above.

Some example ballads can be found below:

Samuel Taylor Coleridge: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Robert Louis Stevenson: Sing me a Song of a Lad that is Gone

Category 1 (ages 7 to 10 as of May 1, 2011)

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare

Call it Courage by Armstrong Sperry

Category 3 (ages 15 to 19 as of May 1, 2011)

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

We try to choose themes that will leave a lot of room for students’ imagination and interpretation, without us dictating the response. Students do not have to actually include the theme title in their poem. The titles are meant to be the inspiration and theme behind whatever images or story the students decide to portray. We hope that students will come up with many imaginative ideas to fit the theme. Our judges love it when a student comes up with something they had not thought of before.

Umbrella Diplomas Problematic For Maryland Law Enforcement Jobs

Homeschool graduate James Wickless (name changed to protect his privacy) applied for employment with the Baltimore County Police (BCP). He received a written response explaining that “you do not

Page 6: SALEM CHRISTIAN SCHOOL - homeschool-life.com · PDF fileDiplomas / Transcripts / Counselor Angela Bonomo Sandy ... Bible Bee is being co-sponsored by Perry Hall Baptist Church and

6

possess a valid diploma recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education.” Because of his family’s membership in Home School Legal Defense Association, he contacted us for help.

HSLDA Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff traveled to Baltimore to meet with a representative of the BCP. The representative said that James’ diploma was rejected because it was issued by an umbrella program.

After a lengthy conversation, the representative still refused to budge. The door to James’ employment with BCP remained shut.

We are aware that many umbrella programs issue diplomas. In the vast majority of situations—such as getting into college, enlisting in the military or employment (other than with Maryland law enforcement

agencies), an umbrella-issued diploma will serve the intended purpose.

However, if there is any possibility that your student will seek employment with a law enforcement agency in Maryland, an umbrella-issued diploma could create an insurmountable barrier.

FROM HSLDA’S WEEKLY UPDATE 5/10/11

GIRL’S SOCCER 8TH – 12TH GRADES

IF INTERESTED, PLEASE CONTACT COACH TIM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Indoor soccer has just ended but it is already time to register for fall soccer. The Bel Air league of the FCA

(Fellowship of Christian Athletes) team started their fall registration last week.

The fee this year for the FCA rec team will be $85.

There has been MUCH interest in the FCA LADY STRIKERS team from players around the area. This interest has

sparked some new oppurtunities for all of our players. We have formed a FCA SOCCER BOARD to help guide

these new oppurtunities. We will have our SAME rec team this year AND there is a good possibility that FCA may

be able to form a SECOND rec team in the BEL AIR REC LEAGUE. All efforts will be made to keep our origianl team

from last year together.

IN ADDITION, we will be forming a VARSITY FCA LADY STRIKERS TEAM. We plan on playing an 8 game schedule

against private area high schools. We have 4 games already scheduled for the fall. The goal is to transition into a

permanent VARSITY team for the 2012 season. For the 2011 season, players wanting to tryout for the VARSITY

team will be required to play for the rec team in addition to the Varsity team. Although we do not anticipate

turning away any players wanting to play for the Varsity team, we will have tryouts and we will carry no more

than 21 players for the first year.. The team fee for the Varsity team, which includes playing for the rec team,

will be $150. The Varsity team will have their own set of uniforms and some other team apparel.

Some quick guidelines for the two programs being offered:

REC TEAM:

Players can be from any school or home school.

Players up to the age of 19 ARE ELIGIBLE, which includes most girls in their freshmen year of college. .

Page 7: SALEM CHRISTIAN SCHOOL - homeschool-life.com · PDF fileDiplomas / Transcripts / Counselor Angela Bonomo Sandy ... Bible Bee is being co-sponsored by Perry Hall Baptist Church and

7

Players may be in 8th grade as well. VARSITY TEAM:

Players must be in high school, 9th-12th grade.

Players must be either home schooled or attend a school that DOES NOT offer girls soccer in

the FALL.

Please feel free to forward this letter to other home school co-ops, individual players from schools or home

schoolers.

Questions about practices, games and/or to register, please call Coach Tim 443-324-3914
