The Burj Khalifa known as the Burj Dubai before its inauguration,

It is the tallest structure in the world, standing at 829.8 m, far taller than the previous record holder, Taipei 101.

Construction of the Burj Dubai began in 2004, with the exterior completed 5 years later in 2009.

Delay Emaar Properties announced on 9 June 2008 that construction of

Burj Khalifa was delayed by upgraded finishes and would be completed only in September 2009  A revised completion date of 2 December 2009 was then announced.However, Burj Khalifa was opened on 4 January 2010, more than a month later

Its 124th floor outdoor observation deck is also the world's highest, and its elevators will travel the longest distance.The $1.5bn tower is more than twice the size of the Empire State Building and its construction took thousands of workers six years to complete.

1. The tower is composed of three elements arranged around a central core. The design is said to be based on the desert flower Hymenocallis native to the region2. The Y-shaped floor plan aims to maximize views of the Gulf. As the building rises, its floor space decreases in size3.
