VESSEL DESCRIPTION
“Kawatiri” is a Trailing Suction Grab Hopper Dredger flat bottom displacement type mono hull with a stepped sheer aft, square flat stern and the accommodationaft. The vessel is propelled by twin diesel engines on conventional shafts and propellers and twin rudders and a bow thruster.

CONSTRUCTION
The vessel was built in New Zealand by Whangarei Engineering & Construction Co Ltd and was delivered on the 14th November 1979.
Construction is of welded steel plate on transverse frames and longitudinal stringers. There are four water tight bulkheads.
LAYOUT
The vessel has two accommodation decks with the bridge above the accommodation and the engine room below the accommodation and the pump roomforward below the focsle.
THE BRIDGE DECK has the conning station amidships with the dredging console to starboard with access P & S to each wing deck. The navigation andcommunication area is aft. Behind the bridge is the vent room and battery locker.
POOP DECK has access up and out onto the side decks to port and starboard. This deck also has the galley, mess area, ablutions block and converted crew cabinwith 3 bunks.
MAIN DECK has access up and down via the stair well. It has the Masters and Chief Mates cabins to starboard and Chief Engineer and Second Engineers cabinsto port. Amidships is the ablutions block. Aft is the workshop to port and store to starboard and access to the steering flat and down to the engineroom. Below thefocsle are the Bosuns locker, paint store, lamp room, CO2 locker and access down to the Pump room.
ENGINES, MACHINERY AND ENGINEERING
Propulsion is provided via two turbo charged Mirrlees Blackstone main engines driving through Mirrlees Blackstone Hydraulic marine reversing gear boxes with2.5:1 reduction coupled to conventional shafts and fixed pitch four bladed bronze propellers. The vessel is steered by twin hydraulically operated rudders.

The vessel is fitted with 2 main generator plants and are situated outboard forward on the lower level in the engine room.
The electrical control panel is also forward on the lower level in the engine room.

ELECTRONIC AND ELECTRICAL
Primary ships AC electrical power is provided by the 2 x 193 kVA generators. Voltage is 225 AC. DC voltages are primarily 24volt with some 12volt services
Electrical circuits are monitored and controlled in the engine room and in the wheel house
Battery banks are provided for the Jet Water Pump engine, back up lighting and radio and electronic equipment.
TANKAGE
DIESEL OIL
There are 2 tanks for diesel fuel oil, including overflow tank. Total capacity is 62.14 m3 @ 100%.
FRESH WATER
There is one fresh water tank. Total capacity is 17.30 m3 @ 100%.
BALLAST TANK
There is one ballast water tank. Total capacity is 41.96 m3 @ 100%.
LUBE OIL
There is 1 tank for Lubrication oils. Total capacity is 2.33 m3 @ 100%.

There are 10 other tanks of varying capacity for sewage, sludge and Hydraulic oil.
STEERING GEAR
The rudder room is directly above the rudder posts.
The steering gear is a two hydraulic ram system. The hydraulics are electrically operated. There are two identical electro hydraulic pumps and power units.
A manual override system is also provided.
This area also has a direct telegraph link to the bridge.
The rudders are a semi balanced type.
DREDGING EQUIPMENT
The hopper capacity at the maximum overflow level is 635m3. The overside 500mm trailing suction pipe can operate down to a maximum depth of 12.5m. Thepipe is fitted with a trunnion gantry, gimbal joint and draghead gantry and a California-type draghead and is fitted with a conventional IHC 105-32.5-50 dredgepump driven by a Mirrlees Blackstone ES6M6R 470 hp engine. The Jet water pump is driven by a Cummins QSL9 285 hp engine and provides 120 psi at thedraghead. Discharging is via the 8 bottom doors, or via the port side pump ashore connection with the IHC dredge pump. The hopper is fitted with an adjustableoverflow. Mounted at the forward end of the hopper is a Hitachi Dragline Crane with a SWL of 5 tonne at 45° and fitted with a 1.2m3 Clamshell Bucket. Thevessel is also fitted with a four point mooring system and when used in conjunction with the Dragline Crane is useful for dredging in confined areas.
Dredging Software is HYDROPRO, which is displayed on 3 monitors and used in combination with the IHC Load and Draft Management program which wasinstalled when the vessel was built.
BRIDGE
The bridge is full width with access to the wing decks each side. The bridge is equipped with the ships handling equipment in the forward area with thenavigation area aft of this amidships. The dredging console is located to starboard forward with the associated dredge monitoring equipment.
Much of the equipment on the bridge deck appears to be a mix of original and relatively new equipment and is reputed to be operational.

There are two inflatable life rafts carried, a RFD 4 man unit on the starboard side and a Surviva 12 man with Solas B pack on the port side, both with hydrostaticreleases.
All other safety equipment as per the SSM requirements is provided.

On the foredeck are twin, electro hydraulic windlasses. Each has a chain gypsy, captive reel drum and warping drum.
The vessel has 3 x Stockless anchors, two set up in hawsers in the bow and one spare stowed aft of the forecastle. Each anchor weighs 760 kgs and has 28.5mmstudded link chain with a length of 6 shackles on each cable.
Appropriate fairleads, panama chocks, guide rollers and bollards are located around
the deck for line handling.
On the aft Poop deck are two electro hydraulic windlasses, each winch has a captive reel drum and warping drum and a gantry adjacent, which are utilised aspart of the vessels four point mooring system.

DOMESTIC EQUIPMENT
The galley area is adequate and well laid out with a stainless steel sink top with twin basins and Formica work space. Domestic galley equipment includes:
Panasonic Microwave oven
A domestic type refrigerator and freezer
A domestic type stove and oven.
A stainless steel range hood over the cook top.
A Zip instant hot water dispenser
Two chest freezers
The heads are all stainless steel domestic type bowls with gravity flush. Black water is collected in the blackwater tank.
The showers and vanities have pressure hot and cold water.
SURVEY STATUS
The vessel has been built to Lloyds Register classification but is also now kept under Maritime New Zealand Safe Ship Management, certificate No. 43001 and
expires 29th January 2017.
SUMMARY
“Kawatiri” appears to be an efficient dedicated trailing suction grab hopper dredge that is worked off New Zealand’s West Coast. Due to the vessels relativelysmall size, maneuverability and capability of dredging and dumping in shallow waters, makes her a sort after and versatile dredge.
It is understood that the owners decided to let the LR class survey lapse back in 2013 due to the costs involved to maintain her in class.
Tenders are to be submitted within the above time frame to SeaBoats NZ as detailed in the tender documents. The seller retains the right to sell the vessel priorto the close of tenders.
