Courtney Yehl has been named Valedictorian of Salamanca’s graduating Class of 2014. Courtney graduates with a 96.72 average and a 100.57 index and will receive a NYS Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors. Her course load this year consisted of JCC Calculus, JCC

Courtney will be attending Ithaca College in the fall where she will be studying Physical Therapy. She is receiving L. Hill and A. Newens Scholarship.

Courtney has been very active in extracurricular activities. Her extra curriculars include President of the Student Council for two years and Vice President for four years. She also is a member of the National Honor Society; Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Spanish

Matthew Crandall was named Salutatorian of the Class of 2014. He is the son of Robert and Karen Crandall. Matthew will be attending University of South Carolina in the fall where he will receive the Woodrow Scholarship and the George A. Brizzolara Jr. Scholarship.

Matthew, with a 96.79 average and a 100.42 index, has successfully completed a challenging program of study including JCC Accounting, JCC Calculus, JCC Molecular Biology and Freshman Literature. Matthew will receive a NYS Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors.

Matthew has had an active four years in high school serving as Editor-in-Chief of the 2014 Yearbook and Editor of the school newspaper in 2013. Matthew is a member of National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Business/Marketing

I asked the Seniors if they wanted to leave any words of wisdom to the upcoming Senior Class, let us know things they will miss about Sally High or even a thank-you to a particular staff member. These are their stories.

Dear Upcoming Seniors:

If there was one thing I could go back and change about my senior year, it would have been how big of a procrastinator I had been half of the year. My advice to you is to dig deep, and I mean really deep, to push out your last couple months as a high school student. I stressed myself out even more just because I became too lazy and stopped keeping up with my homework. It doesn't matter what type of student you are, YOU WILL GET SENIORITIS. It is a fact, there is no way around it, but there are ways to help get over it. Fight it as much as you can because you've come this far, don't blow it in the last few months because you simply just don't want to. I wish you all the best of luck next year, and I hope that all of you are successful in your own right. Sincerely, Matthew Crandall

What I will miss most about high school is working day in and day out for a sport. I'm glad I had the athletic opportunity that Salamanca provided me with. Soccer taught me to push through every pain and thought of passing out that came to mind, Basketball taught me that having a good, hard working attitude towards something will only bring more opportunities and even greater success, and most importantly, baseball taught me that sometimes, hard work does not always pay off the way you want it to, but that is a part of life and I am very thankful for every life lesson high school taught me whether it had been good or bad. She also was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math and Science Honor Societies. Haylei also was one of the Yearbook Editors this year. teacher, but a friend as well. I really appreciate all of the extra time you spent helping me with my work because I feel like without that extra help, I wouldn’t of had such good grades. I’ve truly bonded with you and I feel like I can talk to you about anything without being judged. You have been an important person in my high school experience and there’s a lot I’m going to miss because of you. You made me enjoy math more than I already did before and you pushed me to be the best I possibly could. And also, I’ll continue working to make Ellen pay for your wedding! Mrs. Dry: Starting off as a new student to this school sophomore year, you really helped me out a lot. Your moral support helped me get through a tough time I experienced in the beginning. You genuinely care about your students and I was able to witness that myself. You always believed that I could achieve anything I wanted and because of that support, I feel like I’ve accomplished so much. You taught me a lot

especially in your classes where you didn’t mind helping me out when I needed some extra guidance. I’m more efficient with computers and that’s because of you. You’re a great person and I’m going to miss you when I graduate. You’ve made an impact on me and made me want to be a better person overall. Mrs. Hill: This year was the first year that I actually had you as a teacher and I truly wish I would’ve had you sooner. You are such a great teacher and your charismatic personality and kind ways always make my day better. You always want what’s best for you students and even if you don’t agree with decisions they make, you’re still always willing to give your support. I’m going to miss all the parties we got to have in your class. As a coach, you pushed me to give each race and event my everything which I did. have asked for a better coach. At the start of the season I was injured and I was very upset about it but you assured me that I would be running in no time. I wish I could have another year as your student.

For the future seniors: Enjoy every single second of senior year because it really does fly by. At first, most seniors can’t wait to graduate; however, eventually it really starts to hit them that they’re not going to be able to have any more assemblies or dances or chances to bond. It truly is bittersweet being a senior. No senior is ever really prepared for graduation. Some advice I’d give would be to make senior year the BEST year possible! Avoid any drama and just have fun with your friends. Do not pass up any opportunities and GET INVOLVED whenever you can! Help with Homecoming and Winter Weekend and claim your spirit stick at those assemblies. Before you know it you’ll be

walking the stage at graduation with eyes full of tears as you realize it’s actually all over. Also, don’t slack and don’t let

senioritis get to you because IT’S REAL. Work your hardest and make your last year count. Take advice from your teachers and staff because they were in your shoes once and know what life is like after graduation. Be prepared. What I’m going to miss: I’m going to miss a lot at Sally High. I’m going to miss the amazing staff that students are so lucky to have. They care about their students and are always willing to be their moral support if needed. I’m going to miss Mr. Nannen and his crazy personality and Mrs. Middaugh’s cheers. The assemblies and the wall/hall competition are definitely something I’m going to miss the most. I personally loved showing the other classes that the Class of 2014 are definitely the true winners. There is so much positivity within the school that I’m going to always want to come back. There are so many opportunities at this school that other schools do not have. My future: After I graduate, I’m going to Florida Institute of Technology and going to major in forensic


Paul Luce

Ranking #8 in the Class of 2014 is Paul Luce, who receives a NYS Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation and has an average of 93.87 and an index of 95.6. Paul is the son of Jeffrey and Darlene Luce and Kathleen Luce. Paul will be furthering his education at SUNY Fredonia.

Paul’s extra-curriculars during high school include an Editor of the 2014 Yearbook, Vice-President of Student Council, Model UN and participated in Track and Field for 3 years.

psychology in hopes to one day be a crime scene investigator. I know the road is probably going to be tough from here on, however, I think I’m prepared. Most of my teachers have mentally prepared me for what the real world is like.

One teacher who had a huge impact on my senior year would be Mrs. Monacelli. She taught me character, trust, strength, and most importantly responsibility. Without her I wouldn't be walking across that stage this year. So thank you Mona for everything you have done for me. I'll miss you most of all!

To the juniors, senior year is going to fly by next year. Don't blink because it will be gone before you know it.

Derek Dux

Derek Dux with an average of 92.95 and an index of 94.79, is ranked #9 in this year’s graduating class. He receives a NYS Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. Derek is the son of Daryl and Laurie Dux. will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology in the Fall and is receiving the Computing Medal Award.

Extracurricular activities Derek’s been involved in include National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Business/Marketing Honor Society. Derek participated in Drama Club, golf, tennis and soccer.

Ethan Kenyon

Ethan Kenyon graduates with a NYS Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors with an average of 94.6 and an index of 92.82 to earn the #10 rank. Ethan, the son of Lisa and Ed Cockburn and Sheldon Kenyon, will be attending Hilbert College in the Fall.

Ethan is a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society and was involved in Drama Club for two years. Ethan was a 2013 delegate in New York State Boys’ State.

The following staff members will retire from SCCSD on June 30th. Together, they have 345.5 years of service to this District. Congratulations and Thank You!

Diane Dietrich – 34.5 years with SCCSD as a Math Teacher for the Jr.-Sr. High. She really enjoyed working with the students believes that we have an excellent faculty at SCCSD. She hopes that the students will take advantage of the excellent teachers that we have here. Her youngest son recently had twin boys and she is planning on spending time watching them and traveling.

Geoffrey Dietrich – 35 years with SCCSD as a Science Teacher for the Jr.-Sr. High. He really enjoyed his role as the Senior class advisor which he did for 15 years. He states that “99% of the students here are better than students he has seen at any other school. They are great to talk to and fun to be with.” He would like the students to know that “you do not realize until you are out of here how much more you could have done and how much further ahead you could be if you just apply yourself now. When you get to college or are

out of high school it is really too late. You have got to do it now.”

Cynthia Mohr – 35.5 years with SCCSD, the first 3.5 years she was a Special Education Teacher for the last 32 years she has been a 2nd Grade Teacher. Mrs. Mohr states she will miss the teachers and staff but will mostly she will miss her “kids”. She states that they have taught her a lot. Her “kids” have “brought a smile to her face and have made her laugh right along with them so many times because of the things they say and do”. It is her belief that “every child deserves someone who will never give up on them, someone who understands the power of connection and someone who insists that they can be the best that they can be.”

Carol Herbach – 34.5 years with SCCSD as a 1st Grade Teacher. She really enjoyed working with her 1st Grade team and all the people at Prospect who are loving, caring and giving. She has especially enjoyed working with the kids and all the memories that they have given her. After retirement

she plans on resting up and having new adventures. She also plans on spending a lot of time at her daughter’s café in Ellicottville.

Lisa Monacelli – 25 years with SCCSD as a Social Studies Teacher in the Jr. Sr. High School. Some of her favorite memories are of her 20 years of coaching. She states she had “great girls, great teams, and great memories”. She will miss watching the seniors who come in full of “Senioritis” and then go off into the world to do great things. She wants to make sure she leaves the students with this thought “do not be so harsh on your community; you have a great past and history to be proud of, don’t lose sight of it.” She also wants to remind students as she does every Friday to not “Drink and Drive or Text and Drive.” She plans on working at her photography business Mona Lisa Photography as well as continuing her positions for the Post Journal and Dunkirk Observer as a sports photographer.

Sheryl Nussbaum – 28 years with SCCSD as a Reading Teacher in the Jr. Sr. High. She states she has two things she will miss about “Sally” High – her Colleagues and her wonderful students. She wants to thank her colleagues as she really appreciates all of their expertise that they have shared with her. She also wishes all the students at the Jr. Sr. High well in all of their endeavors.

Mary Plonka –

29 years with SCCSD as a Social Worker. She states that “it has been very rewarding to watch students succeed and to be there to support them as they grow and change and learn”. She hopes that “they continue to work, trying to build a strong family feeling for the High School, and help others find their sources of strength. She also states that SCCSD has a “wonderful variety of students” and that “it is wonderful to work with all of the different students”. Her future plans are to be a private practitioner as a Trauma Therapist.

James Rolick –

25 years with SCCSD as an Art Teacher in the Middle School. He states that after 30 years as an Art teacher 25 years with SCCSD, a district that strongly supports the arts. Charles Fowler, an arts-in- education, advocate has said "...with a subject matter as broad as life itself, the arts easily relate to aspects of almost everything else that is taught...". I am proud to have built relationships with administrators, fellow teachers, parents, students, and community members to make art strong in the schools and in the lives of others.

Christine Bartoszek – 30 years with SCCSD in the Jr. Sr. High Guidance Office as a Keyboard Specialist. She states that she enjoys working with all the students in the Jr. Sr. High but it has been especially rewarding to work with the senior’s as they fill out College and Scholarship applications. She enjoys seeing them be accepted into colleges and saving money through scholarships. Her advice to

students: “senior year is a busy year, it goes by fast, have fun and enjoy yourself.” She wishes all of the 2014 class the best of luck. Her plan for retirement is to spend time with her grandchildren.

Lawrence Pierce – 14 years with SCCSD as a Bus Driver transporting students safely to and from school along with numerous events.

Nancy Pierce – 28 years with SCCSD as a Bus Driver transporting students safely to school, BOCES, back home and to many, many events.

Virginia Baker – 22 years with SCCSD as a Custodian/Cleaner. She helped to keep our buildings sparkling clean ensuring that our students had a clean environment to learn in.

Salamanca Warriors – The PowWow 2014 Graduate – Year-End Edition

From the Desk of the Superintendent Dear Graduates,

First and foremost, congratulations on your numerous successes. Achieving and earning your diploma is truly the first of many milestones you will experience in life. This to date, can easily be described as the pinnacle of your school career and for those earning Regents with Distinction, High Honors, a Diploma or Achievement Credential status, the accomplishment in countless and individual ways is impressive. But truth is, the commencement ceremony is not the end of the journey but, what Robert Frost, American Poet describes as a “fork in the road”. Where each graduate will travel is a function now of personal choice. Whether it be the university and advanced degree pathway or employment or military or self-exploration via a backpacking trip to Europe, education never ceases nor ends. You have the tools to accomplish great and wondrous things. Make the most of what lies ahead. Celebrate (safely), explore, think, go and do all that fulfils your dreams and aspirations.

As our newest alumni, remember no matter where life takes you, or how bumpy the road gets or stormy the seas become, Salamanca will always welcome you back home. On behalf of our school faculty and staff and the entire community, we cannot wait to see the great accomplishments that lie in store for the Class of 2014.
