wildlydirectedpinchesfailedtodislodgetheintruder,whosemotto,indeed,seemedtobeExcelsior;andthelawfuloccupantoftheclotheslaybackagainstthecushionsandendeavouredrapidlytoevolvesomemeansforputtinganendtothedualownership.ItwasunthinkablethatheshouldcontinueforthespaceofawholehourinthehorriblepositionofaRowtonHouseforvagrantmice(alreadyhisimaginationhadatleastdoubledthenumbersofthealieninvasion).Ontheotherhand,nothinglessdrasticthanpartialdisrobingwouldeasehimofhistormentor,andtoundressinthepresenceofalady,evenforsolaudableapurpose,wasanideathatmadehiseartipstingleinablushofabjectshame.Hehadneverbeenabletobringhimselfeventothemildexposureofopen-worksocksinthepresenceofthefairsex.Andyet--theladyinthis

casewastoallappearancessoundlyandsecurelyasleep;themouse,ontheotherhand,seemedtobetryingtocrowdaWanderjahrintoafewstrenuousminutes.Ifthereisanytruthinthetheoryoftransmigration,thisparticularmousemustcertainlyhavebeeninaformerstateamemberoftheAlpineClub.Sometimesinitseagernessitlostitsfootingandslippedforhalfaninchorso;andthen,infright,ormoreprobablytemper,itbit.Theodoricwasgoadedintothemostaudaciousundertakingofhislife.Crimsoningtothehueofabeetrootandkeepinganagonisedwatchonhisslumberingfellow-traveller,heswiftlyandnoiselesslysecuredtheendsofhisrailway-rugtotheracksoneithersideofthecarriage,sothatasubstantialcurtainhungathwartthecompartment.Inthenarrowdressing-roomthathehadthusimprovisedheproceededwith
