WelcomeWelcomeSakata has a long history of creating breakthrough vegetable varieties. In fact, we are quite proud that 2013 marks our Centennial year and that we will join the ranks of those few companies that have celebrated this milestone.

What does 100 years in business mean? It means we have a long history of consistently bringing breakthrough genetics to the marketplace.

Early breakthroughs like our popular Marathon broccoli have become classics — and are still market leaders today. This history also means we have the breeding experience and resources to develop new innovative products, including some of our latest introductions, Centennial broccoli, Grand Vantage cabbage and Seaside baby leaf spinach.

In this year’s catalog you’ll find a complete line-up of top-quality products bred with dealers, growers and retailers in mind. From our world-leading broccoli, beets and spinach, to our ‘up and comers’ like Jack Sprat pumpkin, you’re sure to find something just right for your market, region and slot.

Peruse these pages and you’ll not only learn about Sakata Seed America’s products, but those of Chriseed. To make it easy, we’ve integrated all products together. Now all cabbage varieties, for example, are conveniently located under one complete cabbage section.

We’re proud to bring exceptional new varieties to the market with many more on the horizon. This year we have new introductions in multiple crop categories including

beets, broccoli, spinach, pumpkin, melon, onion, tomato and pepper. Check out our Centennial Collection to see some of the exciting things in store.

We thank you for your business and look forward to serving you in the future.

1913 - 2013 • Breeding Breakthroughs for 100 YearsIn 1913, upon returning to Japan from a worldwide tour, Takeo Sakata founded what is

now Sakata Seed Corporation. 100 years later, Sakata has grown and extended its reach across the globe. With subsidiaries on five continents, including North America,

Sakata now offers its quality products and services worldwide.

terms

saKata seed ameriCa deFinitions oF terms used to desCriBe reaCtions to pathogens, pests and stresses

The terms used in this catalog to describe the reactions of varieties to various diseases, pests, or stresses are consistent with those developed and used in the sciences of plant pathology and plant breeding, and by the International Seed Federation.

immunity: Not subject to attack or infection by a specified pest or pathogen.

resistanCe: Resistance is the ability of a plant variety to restrict the growth and development of a specified pest or pathogen and/or the damage they cause when compared to susceptible plant varieties under similar environmental conditions and pest or pathogen pressure. Resistant varieties may exhibit disease symptoms or damage under heavy pathogen or pest pressure.

Two levels of resistance are defined:

• High resistance (HR): plant varieties that highly restrict the growth and development of the specified pest or pathogen under normal pest or pathogen pressure when compared to susceptible varieties. These plant varieties may, however, exhibit some symptoms or damage under heavy pathogen or pest pressure.

• Intermediate resistance (IR): plant varieties that restrict the growth and development of the specified pest or pathogen, but may exhibit a greater range of symptoms or damage compared to “highly resistant” varieties. Intermediately resistant plant varieties will still show less severe symptoms or damage than susceptible plant varieties when grown under similar environmental conditions and/or pathogen or pest pressure.

toleranCe(t): The ability of a plant variety to endure an abiotic stress without serious consequences for growth, appearance and yield.

susCeptiBility: The inability of a plant variety to restrict the growth and development of a specified pest or pathogen.

Resistance claimed in a plant variety is limited to the specified biotype, pathotype, race or strain of the pathogen or pest. Statements on the reaction of varieties to a specific pathogen, pest or stress are based on evaluations made under defined conditions and are believed to be reliable. However, it is important to understand that these reactions can be affected in nature by environmental, biological (e.g. new pathogen races or pest biotypes which overcome resistance), or other uncontrollable factors that may alter expected performance, and thus are not covered by the original resistance claim.
