De naam en zijn geschiedenis?

Sakai is (ook) de naam van Hiroyuki Sakai van the Food Channel Television program Iron Chef.

Hiroyuki is wereldberoemd voor zijn fusiekoken en zijn mix van de franse en de japanse keuken.

Framework, Tools and Services ( = het produkt )
The Sakai Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE) is an extensible service-oriented architecture for building and deploying enterprise-scale collaboration, teaching and research tools and services. Sakai's CLE offers interoperability, reliability and scalability in a system that is free to acquire, use, modify and distribute.

Is een non-profit organisatie met als primaire doel , het ondersteunen van, reclame maken voor, het onderhouden van Sakai.

De eerste foundation board was de Sakai project board. Open kandidaatstelling en verkiezingen van de terugtredende Sakai board leden.

Jaarlijks budget van $1M, opgebracht door de leden

Ongeveer 8-10 stafleden betaald door de Foundation, belangrijkste taken: communicatie en cordinatie

Organisatie van twee conferenties per jaar

Lidmaatschap is $10,000 per jaar voor onderwijs instellingen, non-profit, of commercile partners. Voor instellingen met minder dan 3000 studenten is bijdrage $5000. (voor minimaal 3 jaar)

Sakai is 100% open source en een open community.

Lidmaatschap is 100% optioneel

Example staff may include, Executive Director, CTO & Architect, Administrative Support,Framework Development & Architecture, Communications Manager,Partner Tech Support & Documentation, QA & Release Manager.

The foundation will not fund core development of the software.

Development staff will come from the community or be contributed as in-kind from Sakai members to the board.

Er wordt hard gewerkt aan de grenzen van Sakai. Voorbeelden:

Keuzemogelijkheden voor verschillende tools in het framework (bijv Discussieforum, Text editor, videoconferencing)

Academic Enterprise Initiative (Oracle): integratie met PeopleSoft Campus Solutions

Sakai is SOA by design: elke volwassen tool beschikt over 1 of meerdere webservices

Nog wat uitwerking van interoperabiliteit en idee dat het geen all-in-one oplossing is.

Waarom voor Sakai kiezen? - 1

Sakai biedt de basisfuncties die men van een ELO en een samenwerkingsomgeving mag verwachten.

De Sakai Suite is zeker bruikbaar in een Nederlandse onderwijsomgeving. Sakai biedt uitgebreide mogelijkheden voor lokalisatie en internationalisering van de gebruikersomgeving.

De aantrekkelijkheid van Sakai is de visie dat het in gemeenschappelijkheid ontwikkelen van een e-learning & collaboration omgeving een enorm potentieel aan resources aanboort en het feit dat het HO een directe invloed heeft op de richting en kwaliteit van de diverse producten die uit het Sakai organisatie voortkomen.
