SAIT & FortisAlberta
Program Description
•The Bachelor of Applied Geographic Information Systems program (BGIS) provides the skills & knowledge to succeed in the GIS industry
• Spatial Analysis, cartography, databases, remote sensing, GIS programming, web & enterprise GIS, unmanned aerial systems
•2 year applied degree• Consists of two 15 week semesters. Paid practicum in year two.
•2 intakes per year• September (64 students).January (32 students)
Capstone Project
• Provides practical experience in the design, planning, development, implementation and presentation of a GIS project
• Industry format course• Learners are accountable for results, not only time spent• Students report to their client/instructor at regular intervals
presenting results, achievements and results
• Students work with an industry mentor• Mentors are members of industry (not just GIS) that share their
experience and knowledge to help students grow as a professional
Capstone Project
• The capstone project ties all courses and associated modules into a seamless term project. Some of the highlighted learning includes:• practical experience in the design, planning, development,
implementation and presentation of a project;• enhance technical skills through the application of course work to a real-
world project;• enhance soft skills through a mentor/mentee relationship with a real-
world industry client;• gain an appreciation for a typical GIS project lifecycle;• teamwork; and• leadership
Capstone Project
• The capstone project supports a wide range of industries• Utilities• Energy (Oil & Gas, Solar, Wind)• Government (Municipal, Provincial, Federal)• Non-profit• Forestry• Environmental• Transportation• Business• Agriculture
Capstone Project
• The capstone project course is co-taught by two instructors
• Wade Hawkins & Jamie Johnston-Stewart
• Groups can bounce ideas off one or both instructors
• Provides students with different perspectives
• Gives students a balanced approach to the project
FortisAlberta Overview
• Electrical Distribution Wire Owner (25kv and below)
• Provide service to 60% of Alberta
• 553,000 customers• 123,000 km of power lines• Operate in 200
communities• Mix of rural and urban
service territory

The Challenge
The Challenge
• Lightning damage occurs without causing outages
• May cause future outages if not inspected and repaired
• Need for analysis to facilitate damage inspection
Objectives
Lightning Strike Uncertainty Ellipse
Density: Lightning Strikes 2012 - 2015
Density: Lightning Outages 2012 - 2015
Asset Upgrade Locations
Priority Math
RESULTS & CONCLUSION
• Error ellipses, hot spots, clusters, density, setting, history
• Recommendations for asset upgrades
• Priority inspection in the post-storm environment
• Prevent outages: happier customers and cost savings
Our Capstone Experience
• Completed 13 capstone projects• Deployed custom widgets in portal• Implemented ArcGIS custom tools• Hired 3 SAIT practicum students• Hired 2 student for a one year GIS
contracting opportunity
