Dearly Beloved in Christ,

The observance of your parish's 100th anniversary is cause for great rejoicing! This event causes us to refl ect upon what it must have been like for the founding mothers and fathers as well as the clergy a century ago, to organize a community and to build a church in which to pray with their families. There were more than likely hardships along the way, challenges and diffi culties. Those early settlers were certainly devoted to Christ and their Armenian heritage and blessed by God to accomplished what has been passed down to today.

But so are you the dedicated communicants of the parish today who offer time. talent and treasury for the parish to thrive. In fact an anniversary challenges us to do even more, fi rst with appreciation for the past and secondly with renewed dedication for the future, to live the faith in the worshipping community passed down by its founders and to do so with zeal and self-sacrifi ce to assure it's sustenance for the next 100 years.

On behalf of the Rhode Island Orthodox Clergy Fellowship and all the Orthodox Christians parishes in the Ocean State (Eastern and Oriental) I extend greetings and congratulations for this major milestone!

With Love in Christ,

Rev. Fr. Andrew G. George

President of the RI Orthodox Clergy Fellowship

Dear Members of the Saints Sahag and Mesrob Community,

It is my distinct pleasure, on behalf of the Parish Council of Saints Sahag and Mesrob Church, to welcome you to the celebration of our 100th Anniversary as a parish in the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America. This is truly a momentous occasion in the history of our parish. One hundred wonderful years of providing spiritual fulfi llment for all of the people of our parish is a major accomplishment indeed. This church has been a place for us to be together during times of great joy and great sadness. From our baptism to our funeral, the church is with us. We look to our church to help us and give us comfort. There is no greater feeling than being a member of our beloved parish. We seem to always speak of our church with the pride of being a member of a family of people whom we have grown up with, learned from, and certainly always respected. The great joy of coming to church on a Sunday and, not only praying to our Lord, but also doing it with those people whom we have known for most of our lives. Being together with those we love gives us a wonderful feeling that can only be found in a “family”.

I am well aware of the awesome responsibility that goes with being a member of the Parish Council of this church. We are the descendants of those wonderful members of the original Parish Council of Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church who helped pave the way for future generations. We should never forget the tremendous work done by these people to help us to the point that we are tonight. Through their hard work and sacrifi ce, they have set the example for all future Parish Councils to follow. Hopefully, we will pass along the same sense of dedication and sacrifi ce to our youth today. We are their role models and take that responsibility very seriously. With God’s help, I am confi dent that we will leave our church in good hands and the future will be bright.

In conclusion, I thank you for, not only being here tonight, but for all the love that you have shown to our church through the years and I thank you in advance for your continued love and support.

Sincerely,John R. Kazarian

Parish Council Chairman

June 2014

Greetings,

Today we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church and we are excited you have chosen to join us as we observe this special milestone.

In 1914 our forefathers had the vision to purchase the property on Jefferson Street. Their faith had brought them to the United States as immigrants seeking a better life. Through their strong religious convictions, determination and work ethic they made the Armenian community a viable force in our state. Our “Blue Cross” is a beacon for all Rhode Islanders.

I would like to thank Rev. Fr. Shnork Souin and all the members of the Centennial Banquet Committee for their tireless efforts to make this celebration a meaningful and memorable one for all.

Because of the hard work and faithfulness of all who have entered our church since January 1914 to the present we look forward to the next 100 years.

 Highlights in our Church's History

The year 1913 is considered the renaissance of the Providence Armenian Community because thereafter started a new chapter in its history. Our property on Jefferson Street was purchased, and the dream of having a church building of our own fi nally came true. Prior to 1913, services were held in a hall at 50 Exchange Place.

At the end of 1913, the Very Reverend Vagharshag Arshagouni, a former Prelate of Zeytoon, became the pastor of the Providence parish and he performed the fi rst Christmas Holy Badarak in the newly purchased Church on January 20, 1914.

On June 7, 1914, St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church was consecrated by Bishop Moushegh Seropian assisted by Reverend Shahe Kasparian, Very Reverend Dripon Bidzagian, and Vicar General Reverend Manigian.

In August 1938 the Parish Council invited a young clergyman from Jerusalem, Very Reverend Sion Manoogian to become the pastor of the Church. He served for almost eight years and this period was one of enthusiasm, organization, and reawakening since a new spirit was instilled in the people, and the Priest and Parish Council worked together in great harmony. This spirit enabled the Armenian community to grow morally, spiritually and fi nancially. All organizations within the Church were inspired by the new pastor's administrative capabilities and drive. He organized the Junior League, the Junior Ladies Aid Society (later the Women's Guild) and reorganized the Sunday School.

In the fall of 1938, our parish celebrated the 25th anniversary of the consecration of our Church.

Page 27: Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church 100th Anniversary Banquet Book

In appreciation of his leadership and accomplishments, it was requested that a recommendation be forwarded to the Ecclesiastical Council that Very Reverend Sion be elevated to the rank of Bishop. He was ordained Bishop in the spring of 1946 in Etchmiadzin by His Holiness Kevork VI. On his return he was accorded a very enthusiastic reception. Shortly thereafter, Bishop Sion left Providence to assume duties in the Detroit parish.

After his departure four clergymen served until 1950 when Reverend Shahe Altounian, a graduate of the Jerusalem Seminary and the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Cambridge, arrived in Providence. Reverend Shahe was later awarded a Masters Degree in Sacred Theology from Brown University. During this period the younger generation took a greater part in Church activities and a Men's Club was started, the main purpose of which was to teach its members the background and administration of the Church. An envelope system of donations was successfully instituted. Der Shahe founded, edited and published a monthly newsletter called "Our Home". During the mid-1950's, a collection for the purchase of a printing press for Holy Etchmiadzin was successfully completed.

In 1953, the fortieth anniversary of the church was celebrated. After nearly eight devoted years in offi ce, on June 1, 1958, Reverend Shahe assumed a new pastorate in Oakland, California.

Der Haik Donikian, who had been recently ordained by the Primate Archbishop Mampre Kalfayan, arrived and celebrated his fi rst Holy Badarak in Providence on June 8, 1958. He was largely instrumental in fi nally constructing Egavian Auditorium next to the Church. The Egavian brothers, George, Edward and Larry, had donated funds for this purpose several years before, but for various reasons construction had been delayed. (Der Haik remained our parish priest for a record 22 years.)

Dedication of the Egavian Auditorium - February 26, 1961

Page 28: Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church 100th Anniversary Banquet Book

On June 14, 1960, the most important singular historical event in the entire history of the church took place - the visit to Providence of His Holiness Vasken I, Catholicos of All Armenians. It was indeed a memorable event when His Holiness blessed the cornerstone of the new auditorium. The Catholicos conducted Vespar Services for an overfl owing congregation and later presented to our Church a silver chalice, a beautiful watercolor painting of the Cathedral of Etchmiadzin and a stone tablet (khatchkar) inscribed with the traditional Armenian

Cross. This was the fi rst time in history that the Supreme Head of the Armenian Church had visited the United States. In his honor, a banquet of unparalleled proportions was given the evening of his visit at the Sheraton-Biltmore Hotel. Present were religious and governmental offi cials as well as an overfl owing number of parishioners. During his visit the Vehapar awarded the Medal of Saint Gregory to Mr. Larry Egavian for outstanding service to the Armenian Church.

The celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Church took place on October 6, 1963 in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton-Biltmore Hotel. In attendance were a large number of parishioners, as well as governmental and religious leaders., During an elaborate program, all the speakers commended us and wished us continued success. The new Interstate Highway, Route 95, had eliminated several of the streets close to the Church and left us with little space to park automobiles. Fortunately, the anniversary celebration was a fi nancial as well as a social success, and seventeen thousand dollars

were used to purchase properties on Jefferson and Orms Streets opposite the Church. The area today serves as a parking lot. From 1968 to 1973, several nearby properties were purchased for purposes of future expansion. As a result of this, a mortgage of $88,000 remained until 1981 when a fund raising campaign to retire the debt was initiated by the then Very Reverend Vazken Keshishian.

The spirit of Christian brotherhood was never better demonstrated than by two singular gifts during our major renovation in 1969. The Providence Greek community donated their large, beautiful, valuable center chandelier to us. The newly-installed pews were from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of West Warwick, Rhode Island. During the major renovation, the exterior was cleaned and painted. The front and side were landscaped. The Church lobby fl oor was completely rebuilt and the lobby renovated. A new boiler was installed and the heating system modernized. The interior of the Church was painted in light colors; and the pews were replaced, refi nished in light colors, and arranged in a manner such that a wide center aisle was created. Numbered lights were placed on both sides of the altar to assist parishioners in following the Church services. New carpets were placed on refi nished fl oors. A new Baptismal Font was constructed and a sound system installed in the nave. All of the above were done in a manner that gave the Church a modern appearance. The total cost was seventy-fi ve thousand dollars. The Electronic Bells, in the Church tower, which play Sharagans, were donated in 1970.

The kitchen in Egavian Cultural Center was expanded and renovated in 1977. Air conditioning was installed in the auditorium largely through the efforts of our local A.C.Y.O.A. chapter. The Church continued gradual acquisition of near-by land.

The Armenian Cross on the tower, originally installed in 1935, was replaced in 1979 by virtue of a donation.

The renovation of the Church stained glass windows was completed. A new Church roof, a new dual-boiler heating system and circulating fans were also installed by 1987. Through a gift from the Ajootian family, two parcels of land were donated to the Church in late 1987. This completed Church ownership of all land from Egavian Cultural Center to Orms Street.

The year 1988 is a signifi cant one in the history of the Armenian community for it marked the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Community of Providence, the 90th anniversary of our Diocese, the 75th anniversary of Saint Sahag and Saint Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church and the 65th anniversary of the Choir.

A Special Parish Assembly authorized a new Armenian Style cupola for the top of the steeple which eventually cost $209,000. A new cross was donated by Mr. Paul G. Hanoian. A new electronic organ was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Mardigian (Southfi eld, Michigan) the sanctuary's sound system was upgraded.

Our Parish hosted the Diocesan Assembly in 1977

Page 31: Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church 100th Anniversary Banquet Book

The year 1993 was highlighted by two Special Parish Assemblies and the re-assignment of our pastor, the Very Reverend Father Baret Yeretzian. In April 1993, the First Special Parish Assembly authorized the sale of the 6.5 acres of land donated to the Church in 1964 by the Anjoorian Family for $45,000.

The second Special Parish Assembly in September 1993 authorized an $880,000 project for the renovation and expansion of the Egavian Cultural Center. The approved project included an elevator, enlarged kitchen, a totally renovated and expanded Cultural Center, new offi ces, a larger entrance to accommodate the elevator, and additional meeting rooms. The project would proceed when donations and pledges reached $500,000 with any remaining cost to be covered by mortgage fi nancing, if necessary. (In fact, the total cost of construction and equipment was $910,000 and the Church assumed a mortgage of $250,000 in 1997.)

The $500,000 goal in donations and pledges was reached by May 1, 1994. In June 1994, clergy, parishioners, and contractor personnel participated in the groundbreaking ceremony.

The year 1995 was a momentous time for our parish. New Church organizations were formed (Cultural Committee, Jr. Choir, Financial Advisory Committee, the completion and dedication of the newly renovated and expanded Egavian Cultural Center, etc.). Coincidental with, but not part of the renovation/ expansion project, was the air-conditioning of our sanctuary. Paul G. Hanoian graciously had donated $25,000, which was matched by additional contributions to reach to the $50,000 project goal.

The fi rst event in the renovated and expanded facilities was an optional black tie gala reception for all donors in March 1995, followed by a banquet the next day to offi cially open the facilities. The offi cial dedication banquet and the blessing of the facilities by the Primate, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, and the presentation of a Gontag (Encyclical) from His Holiness Karekin I to a major benefactor,

Mrs. Edward (Siroon) Egavian, took place in October 1995. The Encyclical marked the dedication of the Egavian Cultural Center and recognized the outstanding contributions made by the Egavian family for the stability of the Armenian Church and the edifi cation of its people.

In 1999, the Church received $1,250,000 from the estate of Paul G. Hanoian. Adhering to the terms of the bequest, the money was used to discharge the remaining mortgage balance, provide for capital improvements to the church steeple cross maintenance and the establishment of several

endowment funds, the earnings of which will be used to award grants to individuals studying for the priesthood and for church operating expenses. For his thoughtful generosity, the multi-purpose addition to the Egavian Cultural Center is now named The Paul G. Hanoian Memorial Wing.

The storage room near the elevator was converted to a library, which has provided access to Armenian research and study. The land adjacent to the Hanoian Wing became part of a Church grounds improvement project.

The Church greatly benefi ted from the Estates of Sarah (Sohigian) Black and Florence B. (Sally) Garin. These bequests were gratefully acknowledged as a testament of the consideration and love they each had for their Church.

Church hall improvements continued with a donation for air-conditioning; this area primarily serves the Sunday and Armenian School classrooms. The Special Parish Assembly of June 2002 approved a $110,000 landscaping project and parking lot expansion. A granite monument with our Church's name, on the corner of Orms and Jefferson Streets, was donated by the Vahe Samoorian Family.

2003-2004 - Our church celebrated its 90th Anniversary with a lovely banquet dinner held at the Venus de Milo in Swansea, Massachusetts. 2008-2009 - More signifi cant renovations were undertaken in our Church's sanctuary - that was led by Kenneth Kazarian and his construction team. A major fundraising drive was held to cover the renovations, which raised nearly $330,000, of which $100,000 was received from the Kazarian brothers in memory of their parents George & Mary. An additional $100,000 was made via the estate of George Ananian, as a transfer from our capital account under the direction of his brother Jasper DerAnanian.

January 2009 - A special dedication ceremony and collation were held following church services to celebrate the completion of the sanctuary restorations. Thanks to the

help of many we were able to celebrate Christmas together in our beautifully restored sanctuary. 2013 -2014 - A year of celebratory events have been held in recognition of our Centennial Anniversary.

In Celebration of the Light

I AM AN ARMENIANI am an Armenian.I belong to an ancient race whose roots are in the subsoil of history and whose branches pierce the sky of man’s hopes.I have known ignorance and worshiped false Gods but once I saw the light I have never wavered from the path of truth. My alphabet was not created for the babblings of earth but to proclaim the word of God.I am alive because I have died.Nations conspired to dig my grave but I hold the scales of justice.I own no territory but the earth is mine.In the slavery of governments I am free.He who touches me touches God.He who walks with me walks toward the light.I am the silent voice that stills the thunder of the world.I am primordial dust and will consume the world in the fire of love.

In Memory of Our Grandparents

Davit and Miriam JanigianJohn and Almas Asdoorian

On Sunday mornings, Davit and Miriam would take two buses on cold days and, when the weather was comfortable, they would take one bus and walk up Smith Hill. They wanted to make sure that they were in church by 9:00 a.m. for morning services.

Since our father was a parish council member, we would always be in church by 10:00 a.m. However, that was not early enough for Davit and Miriam. Once they arrived to church they took their seats in separate pews. Davit sat in one of the front pews

and Miriam sat towards the back next to the organist’s (Zari Calu) mother.Davit would always look forward to receiving the Kiss of Peace from the altar

and passing it on to the congregation. They read their Bible and said their prayers daily.

Miriam Janigian and Almas Asdoorian were genocide survivors. However, Almas faced even more diffi culties in this country when her husband

passed away leaving her with three young children (ages 8, 5 and 1 1/2). This was after a separation of fi fteeen years when she was in

Turkish Armenia and he was in America.

Charles and Elizabeth JanigianGenocide Survivors

Charles worked tirelessly for our Church as a member of the parish council for many years. He was also very much involved with the church picnic preparing the meat the evening before at his grocery store along with the other men on the committee. On the day of the picnic, he would work the entire

day from early morning through evening.

Elizabeth also did her part in supporting our church community, She was an active member of various organizations of our church. Elizabeth was named

Mother of the Year by the Ladies Aid in 1990.

They were both very much involved in the church and the Armenian community.

The 7th letter of the Armenian alphabet is է (Pronounced 'Eh')է = էու թիւն = Eyoutioun = Etre = Being

The Armenian capital letter է pronounced "Eh", the seventh letter of the alphabet, when used in a sentence in a religious context, is a direct reference to God and means, "He exists".

The letter often appears at the top of encyclicals and letters issued by the Catholicos to mean "God", "of God",and "in the name of God", and is based on the book of Exodus 3: 1-14.

In every Armenian Apostolic Church we see this letter carved in stone and put high above the altar .

Congratulations Saints Sahag and Mesrob Church and community on your Centennial Anniversary. The Church has served as a foundation of faith for

the Najarian, Kuzirian and Hanoian Families for nearly the entire 100 years, starting with our beloved grandparents.

Throughout the period our families have been proud to be not only active members of the Church, but have cherished their association with the

Armenian community because it has brought such joy and happiness and provided unwavering support during diffi cult periods.

We are excited about the next 100 years and know through the faith we all share, much joy, happiness and success will continue for generations.

Love,
