16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

GOSPEL MEDITATION Active and contemplative. At work and at rest. These are dynamics we all face in our lives, and if we're honest, we might not always balance perfectly! In this Sunday's Gospel, our daily tensions play out in two sisters. Mary "sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak." Martha, on the other hand, is "burdened with much serving." This, as it turns out, is not necessarily "the better part."  All of us reading this have some sort of labor we engage in. We have different trades or careers. We have responsibilities as family members, some of which may take up most of our time. In the time of Scripture, showing hospitality to guests was one of the most important values in society. Our work is important. Jesus himself spent decades as a carpenter. So what's the problem with Martha? Martha is burdened, anxious, and worried. Not only that, but she resents her sister's choice. "Tell her to help me," she demands of Jesus.  How easy it is to get very busy doing good things. We need to provide for our families and plan for retirement. We need to make sure children are clothed, fed, and educated. Our committees, ministries, and sports schedules need to stay on track. However, without a balance of work with rest, without contemplation in the midst of our action, we will miss the point. While many parts are required for our life in the world to function, the better part is our relationship with God. This week, make time in your busy schedule to sit at Jesus' feet. Maybe this is 20 minutes with Scripture, participating in a daily Mass, or a quiet walk alone in the park. Receive what Christ wants to speak to you.

July 22 is the feast of Mary Magdalene. I've heard a lot of stories about her, but who was she really?   Mary Magdalene has been the subject of speculation and scholarship over the last 2,000 years. Mary Magdalene makes her first named appearance in Luke 8:2. She is one of several women following Jesus. Luke specifically mentions that Mary had previously been delivered from demonic possession. Whatever her life looked like before she met Jesus, it wasn't good! Because of this association with being a repentant sinner, Mary Magdalene has been associated with other similar stories in the Gospel, such as the woman caught in adultery or the woman who bathes Jesus' feet with her tears.

Mary Magdalene shows up again by name at the end of the Gospels, when she stands with the Blessed Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross. Mary is also present in the garden of the resurrection. She is one of the woman who goes to bring spices to Jesus' tomb, where they find the stone rolled away. Mary stays in the garden weeping, believing his body has been stolen. Jesus approaches her and calls her by name, and she becomes the first witness to the resurrection! While many of the details of Mary Magdalene's life have been lost to time, she is an example of powerful conversion, deep faith, and intimate love for Christ.

Garden News

It is with great pleasure to announce that Mr. Robert Petrarca is going to be our new Athletic Director! As you may be aware Mrs.

Beth White who has assumed the role for the past two years is stepping down from this position and I want to take this opportunity to thank her for her leadership. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Mrs. White in planning our athletic events. Through the end of this month Mrs. White will continue to be of assistance to Mr. Petrarca during the transition process. Mr. Petrarca is not new to the program as he is our Physical Education Teacher at the school and also has served as a Coach.

While it is only mid-July registration for Fall sports is now open! The forms for our tennis and cross-country programs can be found on the school website or you may pick up a printed copy from the school or parish offices. The St. Rose community participates in CAL (Catholic Athletic League) which offers pupils with experience to play in a competitive environment but also an opportunity for student that have never played to try a new sport. Our CAL program is open to all young people entering Grades 6-8 that are enrolled in the school or a member of the parish. I encourage young people to take advantage of the opportunities available to you by getting involved. Not only is it a great way to have fun and learn something new but participating also allows young people to be a part of a team and make friends. Parents please encourage your child(dren) to join one of our teams and utilize the app to pay the registration fee. Questions regarding the app can be directed to the Technology Teacher Mrs. Julie Nathanson at [email protected]

Also, we are in need of additional volunteers to help out with cross country this Fall. Anyone interested in volunteering their time please contact Mr. Petrarca at [email protected]. Coaching is a rewarding way to give your time to young people and also is an enjoyable experience.

Lastly, as a reminder St. Rose is also offering another session of our basketball camp the last week in August. Please refer to the ad in the bulletin for details and registration information.
