Seventh Sunday of Easter (C) Psalter week 3

2nd June 2019

Alpha continues...Alpha continues this Tuesday and you are all still welcome (PJ: 1:30pm - 2:45pm and HC: 6:30pm - 8:30pm). To help with catering, please contact Sheila (HC Parish Secretary) if you can attend either session. It is important that we pray for our Alpha volunteers and participants; please therefore consider attending Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesday: from approximately 8:00pm to 8:30pm in the small meeting room at HC.Bedford Foodbank are currently short of UHT milk, tinned fruit, tinned vegetables, Long-Life sponge puddings, and jellies. All contributions are gratefully accepted and can be left in the special boxes in the Parish Room. Thank you for your continued support.Building Works at the PresbyteryStarting next week the contractors employed by the diocese will begin works to convert the former study and garage at the Presbytery into accommodation suitable for short term occupancy (there will be a shower-room, lounge and bedroom). This year it will be used by a visiting Priest for the whole of July and September; it will also be used periodically in August. Longer term it will be made available to Priests, Deacons, Religious, Seminarians, etc. for short stays as a place to rest, relax and offer prayer. It will be a wonderful asset to the parish and diocese (who are often in need of temporary accommodation). The diocese will oversee the whole project from start to finish. We hope to keep the inconvenience of the building works to a minimum but your co-operation and understanding would be much appreciated. If you have any questions about this important development you are asked to speak with Fr Wayne.

Paschal CandlesIn order to better enable our Catholic schools to celebrate Eastertide, the Diocese has suggested that they ask their local parish for an old Paschal Candle and to light this during prayer at school assemblies, etc. We have adopted this idea and parishioners have taken a Paschal Candle to their homes for a specific intention; in this way the light of the Risen Christ will shine throughout our parishes for the remainder of the year. Wonderfully, all but one candle are in the parish. The following parishioners, with their intention, have taken a candle:

● Maria Abrantes: Priests and vocations to the Sacred Priesthood● Ann and Hal Cawley: Those who have lapsed from the Faith● Margaret Wells: The Church and her Clergy● Charles and Kathy Stallard: Teams of Our Lady● Pat Wood: Lonely souls for whom nobody prays● Val: That adult children will have open hearts for Christ● Angela Mary Millar: Pope Francis● Stella Good: Children, Grandchildren and Godchildren to be brought

back to Jesus● MariaTeresa Quinlan: The Right to Life● Sister May: to be advised

If you would like an old Paschal Candle (some are rather large) to burn in your home throughout the year for a specific intention, please contact Fr Wayne.Easter Lily Appeal: Thanks to those who sponsored an Easter lily for a departed loved one or for another intention. A list of intentions may be found in the narthex and we shall hold these in prayer at every Sunday Mass until Pentecost.

Confirmation this ThursdayPlease pray that the adult faith of our Confirmation candidates will grow and that they will nurture that faith through their participation in the Sunday Mass in our parishes every week; we pray for:Cade, Bisola, Junior, Gift, Brendan, Robert, Benjamin, Denisa, Anna, Rachel, Isabella, Esther, Joseph, Ellie, Abbie and Hollie. All parishioners are encouraged to attend the Mass of Confirmation with Bishop Peter on Thursday, 6th June at 7:00pm in SsP&J.NB: There is no Morning Prayer or 9:30am Mass this Thursday.Week of Guided Prayer - 11th to 18th JuneThis is an opportunity for parishioners of HC and SsP&J to pray and reflect upon a passage of Sacred Scripture chosen for you each day by a guide. We will meet at SsP&J at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 11th June. During the week, you will individually meet with your prayer guide. The final session will be held when we all meet up again on Tuesday, 18th June at 7.30pm, again in SsP&J. For further information, please contact: Elizabeth 211558 or Barbara 325844.Summer Reflection DAY ALIVE IN CHRISTSaturday, 22nd June, from 10:00am to 4:00pm at Monastery of Christ Our Saviour, Turvey. The cost is £15 and Bishop Peter hopes to attend. Take a packed lunch. BOOKING ESSENTIAL: [email protected] (01582) 723312 Ext 6.SAVE THE DATE Friday, 28th June SAVE THE DATE Two wonderful celebrations are to take place on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Friday, 28th June, this year. The first is a day of prayer called by Pope Francis for the renewal of the Sacred Priesthood (with a major celebration taking place at Westminster Cathedral). The second is the annual "Day of Many Colours" when Missio encourages people to pray the Holy Rosary for the whole world. We shall therefore celebrate this day with the following at Holy Cross Church:

● 9:00am Sacred Heart Litany (offered for an increase in vocations to the Sacred Priesthood)

● 9:10am Morning Prayer (page numbers announced)● 9:30am MASS● Followed by: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the Holy Rosary

with Benediction. Concludes around 11:00am.Come and pray for the renewal of the Sacred Priesthood and for seminarians Liam and Daniel in their formation. Put the date and times in your diary.Missio UpdateThank you to everyone who continues to support Missio through the 'Red Box', the charities box at SsP&J, refreshments after Sunday Mass at HC and with individual donations. In 2018 the monies raised in aid of Missio through the Red Box alone was £72,485; this is an increase of £3,879 over 2017. Wonderfully, we are one of only six dioceses in England and Wales whose 'Red Box' income has increased (there are 22 diocese in total). Thank you to everyone who supports Missio. Please continue to pray for God's blessing on the "Year of Missio" being celebrated in the Catholic schools of our diocese. And Thank You to everyone who has made a donation to Missio using the wall-safe in the narthex raising the wonderful sum of £219.53. This will be given to the component part of Missio (Society of St Peter the Apostle) which trains those who aspire to be a Priest or a Religious Sister in a missionary diocese. With your financial support and prayer Missio is training 30,000 seminarians and 10,000 religious sisters around the world. Fr WayneSaturday, 14th September - Holy Cross Day12:00noon: Mass of Induction for our Catholic Youth Minister at HC followed by Lunch and youth activities. This will be a wonderful way to welcome our Youth Minister to the parishes.Ascension DayThank you to those people who fulfilled the Ascension Day (Holy Day of Obligation) commitment in our community.Marriage of Natalie and Nicholas FraserWe send the assurance of love, support and most importantly prayer to Natalie and Nicholas who were recently married in our parish. May God bless them in their married life. Our Hospital Chaplain at South Wing is Fr Nathanial Onwuekwe. If you or a loved one are admitted and in need of sacramental care, contact him at St Joseph’s Presbytery: (01234) 352569. He regularly visits the hospital on Fridays and celebrates Mass in the chapel at 12:15pm.Volunteer rotas: folders in the narthex.

In the month of June The Holy Father asks us to pray for the Mode of Life of Priests. That priests, through the modesty and humility of their lives, commit themselves actively to a solidarity with those who are most poor.
