UNIVERSITY UPDATESUNIVERSITY UPDATESPLANNING FOR FALL 2020

As the Our Lady of the Lake University family pre-pares for a return to campus operations, the univer-sity values of Community, Integrity, Trust and Service are at the forefront of decision making.

ADJUSTED INSTRUCTION To accommodate the wide range of student needs and desires during the pandemic, OLLU is adopting a variety of strategies as appropriate to each disci-pline:

• Adding more course sections – Reduced class sizes and assignment to more spacious rooms for face-to-face classes to accommodate so-cial distancing.

• Split hybrid classes – Involves half of the stu-dents in a class attending face-to-face for one day of instruction and half attending virtually or completing projects/assignments.

• Online lecture/in-person labs – Involves students attending lecture portion of class online and attending labs in person; addition-al lab sections are being scheduled to accom-modate smaller lab class sizes.

• Online sections – Most courses with multiple sections will offer at least one online section;

Most students will have the flexibility to build face-to-face, online or mixed schedules as needed.

RESIDENCE HALL CHANGESTo accommodate the need for social distancing in the residence halls, OLLU is adopting the following initiatives:

• Reopening former resident hall space – Fol-lowing the opening of Lake View Apartments, the university took several halls offline. Providence Hall, Pacelli Hall and St. Ann’s Hall will be brought back online and utilized for greater social distancing. Work on these halls is happening over the summer to prepare them for use. There will be no triple occupan-cy rooms. There will be some double occu-pancy rooms. There will be no more than two residents sharing bathroom space.

• Social distancing measures in common spaces – Lounges, study rooms and laundry spaces will be adjusted to ensure proper distancing; signage and floor decals will be added as visual reminders.

• Resident hall activities – Social activities in

the residence halls will involve more virtual and outdoor activities to ensure social dis-tancing.

• Hand sanitizer stations – Hand sanitizer sta-tions will be available near hall entrances.

• Intensified cleaning of high-touch areas – New procedures are being adopted for more frequent cleaning of high-touch areas such as door handles, surfaces in common areas, hallways, elevator and stairwells.

ADJUSTMENT TO DINING SERVICESOLLU’s dining services provider Chartwells will be adopting the following measures to provide for so-cial distancing and

• Plexiglass guards – Guards will be installed to prevent the spread of germs.

• Grad-and-Go items – More Grad-and-Go options will be offered to allow community members to take their meals to private spac-es.

• Disposable containers – Will assist with pre-venting spread of germs.

• Spacing of tables and chairs – Will assist with social distancing.

• Visual reminders – Signage and floor decals will provide guidance for social distancing.

• Intensified cleaning measures – Dining rooms will be closed between meal serving times to allow for additional cleaning.

• Visual reminders – Throughout campus there will be signage to remind the community of proper distancing, hygiene, traffic flow and health precautions.

ADDITIONAL MEASURESTo decrease the possibility of exposure, the universi-ty will implement the following:

• One-way traffic flow on stairs – Stairs will be designated up or down to reduce spread of germs from person to person.

• Elevator capacity will be limited – Depending on elevator size, one to two individuals will be allowed at a time.

• Meeting room spaces limited – Limits will be placed on the number of people allowed in

meeting spaces; online/virtual meetings will be encouraged.

• Increased outdoor activities – More student activities will be scheduled in outdoor spaces to provide for greater distancing and more airflow.

• Plexiglass guards – Guards will be placed in key student service areas.

• Hand sanitizer stations – Sanitizer will be available at building entrances and in high-traffic areas outside of computer labs, classrooms, art studios and laboratories.

• Increased cleaning – More frequent cleaning of high-touch and high-traffic areas will take place throughout the day; aerosol disinfec-tants will be used in high-traffic areas and classrooms.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITYAll community members are reminded that mea-sures you take against the virus protect not only you but those around you. All community members are asked to do the following.

• Wear a mask – When in a public space where social distancing is not possible, or in an interior space for sustained periods of time, everyone is asked to wear a mask unless unable to do so. Masks have been shown to reduce the risk of COVID spread significantly.

• Maintain social distance – When possible ensure at least six feet of space between you and others.

• Avoid others if you are ill – Do not attend class or come to work if you are feeling ill or have any COVID-related symptoms or have tested positive for COVID.

• Avoid others if you have been exposed – If you have known exposure to someone who has tested positive for COVID, do not attend class or come to work.
