MARRIAGE MOMENT Palm Sunday is such a baffling feast. Everybody is rejoic-ing in the glory of Jesus’s arrival in Jerusalem. But we also know the end of story; we know that a lot of pain quickly follows. Presumably your wedding day was joyous. Pre-sumably some dark days have followed. Contemplate the ups and downs of your relationship and remember that Good Friday is not the end. There is new life to come.

VOCATION THOUGHT

Today is called Passion Sunday because Our Lord’s love for us is so passionate that it remained unhin-dered by harsh mockery and a painful death on the cross. How passionate is your love for God? If He readily took up His cross for us, how ready are you to respond to His calling? If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Fr. Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out our “Priest of the Month” stories on our website: www.buffalovocations.org.

RING FOUND Last week a Mother’s ring was found outside in front of the church. It is silver with two gemstones. If you lost this ring please call the parish office at 822-1250 so it can be returned to you.

PARENTING PERSPECTIVE “And a sword will pierce your soul too.” (Luke 2:35) This is not a happy thought but anyone who has been a parent knows that times of sorrow mix with times of joy. This is the Paschal Mystery of death and resurrection. As you enter into Christ’s passion, join with the pain Mary felt in watching her son die. Keep this in mind during your times of sorrow.

FR. BILL’S CORNER

ST. MARK’S PASSION The Gospel of St. Mark, proclaimed on the Sundays of Ordinary Time this “Year B” of the cycle of readings is, as you may know, the shortest. Therefore, the Passion reading is also more brief than the other three gospels. So it makes sense that the most essential elements of what the Holy Spirit intends believers to hear would be in this nutshell-version if you will.

One aspect of the story of Christ’s Passion that seems to invite our reflection is the multiple denials of St. Peter. While the betrayal of Judas seems to leave him a kind of murky apostate-instead-of-apostle place in church history, Peter’s denials are closer to what we might attribute to ourselves when honestly assessing our discipleship. After all, the fact that Peter’s denying being one of Christ’s disciples comes after His arrest, and follows the garden kiss/betrayal and ex-change of funds…we might overlook it.

MONDAY NIGHT DENIERS CLUB Every time a seasonal Penance Service comes close, I find myself challenged to present the opportunity in a new/fresh way. My firm belief is that this awesome sacrament of Divine Mercy is a saint-maker. And I also feel that denying that we need that great grace and healing will not only keep us “stuck” in sin but impede our moving closer to the reconcilia-tion that our souls truly need. How many times have we denied that Jesus is Lord by excusing ourselves from following the Lord’s way? It does not have to be an extremely serious fall/sin/mistake to need mercy. The expression “little white lie” is a misnomer. And wouldn’t five years of letting the “little white lies” go without attention turn them beige, then darker brown than a choco-late bunny we might see and devour next Sunday??? For the homily this Monday, I’m writing a reflection on the moment where St. Peter is awakened to his denial of Jesus. The rooster’s crow, prophesied by Jesus Himself, suddenly helps the Rock realize that he has not been faithful, he let the social pressure and his own fear cause him to lie. Not only is he “one of them,” he is the leader of the apostles and disci-ples! Some might even wonder whether these denials are worse than Judas’ betrayal. Yet the denials of the one upon whom Jesus would build His church are reversed, healed and forgiven in the post-resurrection conversation where Jesus asks three times “Do you love me?” Notice that Jesus never names the sin or shames the sinner. A lot of self-righteous people are quick to do that today. The focus of Christ in meeting the broken is to heal and forgive. Let us never forget that. And let us gather for some prayerful “cock-a-doodle-doo!” awakening this Monday evening to turn all our denials back toward much-more-faithful following. Is there a greater way to follow the Passion proclamation and walk together toward the liturgies of the Easter Triduum where salvation’s story offers us the greatest hope?? Peace,

Fr. Bill
