* Joe Ehrmann, a pro-football star playing in Baltimore, lost

his younger brother to cancer. He recalls: “After the last ‘amen’ was said and everybody left, and I was standing by the grave, there was a burning question in my head: ‘What is the main purpose in life?’” Having grown up in a poor urban neighborhood, Joe was struck by the gap between the “haves” and the “have nots.” Then and there, he decided to do something positive. He started The Door, a Christ-centered ministry to help families, offering tutoring for children and counseling for adults.

* Franciscan Father Benedict Taylor took $500 and an aban-

doned building in Harlem and began Project Create, a store-front providing community services such as drug counseling and housing assistance. “In everything,” the priest says, “we need to build self-esteem. People need to feel God loves them. When they learn to love themselves and return to school, get a job, it’s like they discover their personhood.”

* Jackie McNeil found her neighborhood in San Francisco

invaded by drug dealers. The situation robbed people of a safe - and hope-filled - future. Jackie wouldn’t settle for these conditions. She printed up flyers, held house meetings, and rallied neighbors to do round-the-clock surveillance, taking pictures and writing down the license plates of dealers to report to the police. In the end, three crack houses were eliminated, and dealers were jailed or run out of the neigh-borhood.

* Joe Ehrmann, una estrella del fútbol profesional jugando en

da?'". Crecer en un pobre barrio urbano, Joe se sorprendió por

Child and youth protection

classroom training in Spanish The Office of Safe Environment and the Office of Hispanic Ministry are providing a safe environment (child and youth protection) classroom training in Spanish for adults interest-ed in volunteering to lead children and youth in ministry. The live Hispanic classroom certification training will be Wednes-day, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Pastoral Center, 27 C St., Salt Lake City. Estamos a dos semanas para celebrar nuestro Festi-val de Verano. Este lunes 13 tenemos nuestra última reunión para revisar algunos detalles de cada Comi-sión. Desde ya les doy las gracias, por estar envuel-tos en el buen desempeño de Festival, especialmen-te por apoyar la Gran Rifa, a las niñas candidatas a Reyna/Princesa. Gracias también a quienes integran las Comisiones de las ventas de comida. Todos es-tán preparados para cumplir con los requisitos de Ciudad respecto al manejo de alimentos. Invito a to-dos ustedes a apoyar los dos días, 25 y 26 de agos-to. Habrá música y juegos para niños, mucho entrete-niendo para toda la familia. En la tómbola habrá mu-chos premios, artículos nuevos y muchos artículos en el “Yard Sale” en el Salón Social. Todos los fondos serán utilizados para el mantenimiento de los edifi-cios y dar un empujón más, a nuestra deuda parro-quial. El plan es bendecir la ampliación del estaciona-miento en el mismo festival. Si todavía está indeciso, anímese y participe con toda su familia. Mount Calvary Cemetery Collection is NEXT WEEKEND. Please consider giving, to help with the upkeep and maintenance of the only Catholic Cemetery in the Salt Lake Valley.

From the Pastor’s Desk We are two weeks away to celebrate our Summer Festival. On Monday the 13th we will have our last meeting to review some details of each Commission. I Thank You, for being involved in the good performance of the Festival, especially for supporting the Grand Raffle, the girls who are candidates for Queen / Princess. Thanks also to those who make up the Commissions for food sales. All are prepared to meet the City's requirements for food handling. I invite all of you to support us on August 25 and 26. There will be music and games for children, much entertaining for the whole family. In the raffle there will be many prizes, new items and many items in the "Yard Sale" in the Social Hall. All the pprofis will be used for the maintenance of the buildings and give a further boost to our parish debt. The plan is to bless the expansion of the parking lot the same weekend as the festival. If you are still undecided, be encouraged and participate with your entire family. Father Luis Toro, from Venezuela, will be with us celebrating the Mass in Spanish on the Festival Weekend.
