MASS INTENTIONS

Readings & Reflections

GOD'S WORK STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the "Bread of Life" discourse from John's Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews' ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life--a marvelous promise, but this "reward" is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Liturgy Updates

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 12, 2018

I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.

-- John 6:51

-- John 6:27a

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Masses Wednesday, August 15th Is a Holy Day of Obligation

All are invited to join us to celebrate the Eucharist Mass times are as follows:

6:30 am, 8:00 am, 9:30 am (school attends), 12:15 pm, 5:30 pm, 7:00 pm (Spanish)

The Assumption is the oldest feast day of Our Lady. In the seventh century, it began to be celebrated in Rome under the title of the "Falling Asleep" ("Dormitio") of the Mother of God. Soon the name was changed to the "Assumption of Mary," since there was more to the feast than her dying. It also proclaimed that she had been taken up, body and soul, into heaven. This belief was ancient, dating back to the apostles themselves. All the feast days of Mary mark the great mysteries of her life and her part in the work of redemption. The Assumption completes God's work in Mary since it was not fitting that the flesh that had given life to God himself should ever undergo corruption. The Assumption is God's crowning of His work as Mary ends her earthly life and enters eternity. The feast turns our eyes in that direction, where we will follow when our earthly life is over. The feast days of the Church are not just the commemoration of historical events; they do not look only to the past. They look to the present and to the future and give us an insight into our own relationship with God. The Assumption looks to eternity and gives us hope that we, too, will follow Our Lady when our life is ended. In 1950, in the Apostolic Constitution <Munificentissimus Deus>, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Assumption of Mary a dogma of the Catholic Church in these words: "The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven." Excerpts of this article were taken from the July-August 1996 issue of "Catholic Heritage" by Father Clifford Stevens

Due to the Holy Day of Obligation Mass Schedule, there will be no confessions heard from 5 to 6 PM and the Spanish Mass will be at 7 PM on Wednesday, August 15th.

OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE OUT YOUR FAITH

Fr. Mike Schmitz shares important insights on the meaning of Christ’s Cross. He shows how God’s rescue mission for us includes the need for each person to embrace his own cross in order

to reestablish trust in the Father and the understanding that love requires sacrifice. It also includes a bonus segment on Stations of the Cross, which features reflections on the Lord’s Passion and Death, accompanied by moving audio dramatizations from the Truth and Life Audio Bible.
