Hospital Visits If you or a member of your household is admitted to the hospital, please call the rectory at 773-777-2666. Due to privacy laws, we are no longer notified by the hospital (even Catholic hospitals) when someone is admitted. Fr. Neil, Deacon Bill and the Ministers of Care are more than happy to visit (although only a priest can celebrate the sacrament of anointing of the sick). As a pastoral parish, St. Robert’s would like to reach out to the sick and the homebound, especially for those who cannot attend Mass. Please call the rectory to notify us if someone on your household is in the hospital or is homebound. We can arrange a visit, celebration of the sacraments and add your loved one to our prayer list. Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Habakkuk, a contemporary of Jeremiah, condemns the injustice and indifference of the powerful who exploit their posi-tion. This is similar to last week’s reading from Amos, but Habakkuk is addressing the people of the southern king-dom of Judah. The impending threat this time is from the Babylonians. Habakkuk asks a more fundamental question: why is God silent in times of oppression? He cries out to the Lord, "Violence, but you do not intervene". God re-sponds, telling him to be patient. The vision will come, and the just one, because of his faith, shall live. St. Paul writes to Timothy, also in a time of trouble. He tells him to be strong and to bear his hardship for the sake of the gospel with the strength that comes from God. In Luke’s gospel the disciples ask Jesus to increase their faith. He tells them the parable of the mustard seed. If they have the tiniest amount of faith they will be able to accomplish great things for God’s kingdom. He further adds that when they have done all that they have been commanded to do they are to reply, "We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do."

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today’s scriptures call us to remain faithful and act with justice, even in the face of evil and injustice, even when God does not seem to care. God does care. The prophets cry out to God about the injustices in the world. If God is all loving and all merciful, how could he allow so much evil and suffering? Good questions. Hard questions, for which there are no easy answers.

Habakkuk asks these questions as he sees the violence, the strife and discord oppressing the poor in Judea. And he is aware of the impending conquest by the Babylonians. He asks God why he does not intervene. God answers that "the vision still has its time, it presses on to fulfillment and will not disappoint." The reign of God will be manifest. He tells the prophet that "even if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late." The affirmation ends with a promise that the just shall live because of their faith. While the Lord certainly reaffirms his promise, there is the implication that God will use the evils to somehow further his plans.

This is a hard concept for all of us. God certainly does not call us to be fatalistic or passive in the face of injustice. But he does ask us to accept that we cannot always change the circumstances around us. We are called to respond to those circumstances, with patience and in compassion to the needs of those around us. St. Paul gives the same ex-hortation to Timothy. He tells Timothy to bear his share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God, acting on the words of God in faith and love. If we stay faithful, God will sustain us by the power of the Holy Spirit. If we bear our hardships, trusting in the Lord’s goodness, we will see the face of God. It requires pa-tience, perseverance and trust to live in the image of Christ in the midst of trials, tribulations and evil. God says trust him because the vision will not disappoint. But it will be in God’s time, not ours.

Jesus tells the apostles to trust in the power of the Holy Spirit. He says if they have faith as tiny as a mustard seed, they could tell the mulberry tree to be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey them. He tells them that a true servant not only tends to his master’s business, but, when he comes in to the house, he waits on his master first. When they have done all they have been commanded to do, they are to say that they are servants who have only done their duty. This is another hard saying. Our faith does not give us any claim on God. We are to act with jus-tice, righteousness, forgiveness and all the other virtues regardless of our circumstances. And obedience to the gos-pel will not guarantee freedom from the evil around us. It will, however, gain us interior freedom in Christ, which is ultimately all that matters. Mother Teresa says that God does not call us to be successful, but to be faithful. The prophet Habukkuk reminds us that if we remain faithful, we will see the vision of God.

Today is Respect Life Sunday. God loves each of us deeply and invites us into a personal relationship with him. Living this truth will transform our lives. We are all asked to pray for the dignity of all human life and to work for justice for all people. We will again support the Baby Bottle Project to support the respect-life efforts of the Women’s Center. Please pick up a bottle on your way out of church today and fill it with your spare change, cash or check. We will be collecting the bottles throughout the month of October (details on page two).

I want to remind everyone that the Archdiocese conducts a Sunday Mass Count at all parishes throughout the month of October. During the offertory the ushers will count the number of people present at each mass.

Thank you to the Parents’ Association and all the Run-A-Thon volunteers for a very successful event. We had wonderful weather last Friday; everyone had a great time helping to raise money for our school.

Thank you to Deacon Bill, his wife Ginger and the parish organization volunteers for hosting the Ministry Fair last Sunday. I would like to encourage all parishioners to become active in some organization, ministry or activity in our parish. Without the people breathing life into the community, the parish is only a group of buildings.

Archbishop Cupich will lead the priests of the Archdiocese for a day of reflection and planning this Tuesday. We will be discussing the Renew My Church initiative as well as the pastoral implications of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation The Joy of Love. Please keep us in your prayers.

Beginning this weekend, our church will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists moth-ers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and

spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Wom-en’s Centers have saved over 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church this weekend, fill it with your spare change, and return it to church or to the rectory by the end of October.

Children’s Choir Fall/Winter Schedule The students of SRB school learn music for mass and sing for school masses and certain Sundays/holidays. Parents are asked to assist with the following: 1. Bring your child to church when scheduled to sing 2. Dress you child for mass. 3. Invite family and friends to listen to the children singing

Students should dress in their ‘Sunday best’ when singing in church: School uniform, Business-casual, or Dress clothes. T-shirts, Jeans, etc are not to be worn when singing in church. If possible, dress shoes should be worn. Students do a quick rehearsal before the mass. Again, we ask the parents to cooperate by dropping off chil-dren on time in order to be prepared to sing at mass.

Weekdays - Monday - Friday at 8:30 a.m. Weekends - Saturday Morning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday Evening at 5:00 p.m., Sundays at 8:00 a.m., 10:00a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Holy Days - 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Rectory Office Hours Monday through Thursday - 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday - 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Closed from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. for lunch) Saturday - 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday - 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Weddings Arrangements to be made with a priest at least six months in advance. Please contact the rectory for date and time availability before making other arrangements. Baptisms Celebrated the second and fourth Sunday at 1:15 p.m. Parents need to register at the rectory office. Baptismal preparation class for first time Parents and Godparents is offered on the last Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the rectory. Please note: there are no baptisms scheduled during the season of Lent. Confessions/Reconciliations Saturdays 4:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. or by appointment. Anointing of the Sick 1st Saturday of the month after the 8:30 a.m. mass. Eucharistic Adoration & Benediction Third Wednesday of every month. Adoration begins after 8:30 a.m. mass. Benediction at 5 p.m. Please sign up at the rectory office. Novena Mother of Perpetual Help Novena is offered on the First Tuesday of the month at 6:30p.m. in the church, followed by Benediction. Recitation of the Rosary Monday through Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
