Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The reading from Wisdom highlights the need to be prepared for the coming of the Lord. The scripture recalls the night of the Passover when the people awaited the salvation of the just and their freedom from slavery in Egypt. The Israel-ites trusted in God’s promise; so, in faith, they prepared for their deliverance. The reading from Hebrews continues this theme of trusting in the Lord’s promise, recounting the faith of their ancestors in the history of salvation. Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Abraham and Sarah obeyed the Lord to travel to a distant country, trusting in his promise of an inheritance. Isaac and Jacob were heirs of that promise. Even though they did not live to realize the promise themselves, they believed that God would be faithful to his word, a promise to be fulfilled for their descendants.

In the gospel, Jesus tells the disciples not to be afraid because the Father is pleased to give them the kingdom. He tells them to sell what they have and give alms to the poor, reiterating last week’s theme of storing up treasures in heaven. Jesus then tells them two parables on the need to be prepared.

Wisdom 18:6-9 Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 Luke 12:32-48

Vocations to the Priesthood

The Archdiocese of Chicago Vocations Office helps men discern a call to the priesthood through retreats, visits to the seminary and discernment opportunities. As well, the Vocation Office works with men to determine their eligibility to apply to the seminary for the diocesan priesthood in Chicago. Finally, the Vocations Office actively works to create a culture supportive of vocations through promotion, education, and parish based efforts to raise awareness.

More information on becoming a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago is available by contacting: Fr. Francis Bitterman, Archdiocesan Vocations Office 312-534-8298 or Email: [email protected]

From the Pastor’s Desk

Our readings call us to keep our hearts centered on God. We are told to put our trust in the Lord, be prepared for his coming, and to provide an inexhaustible treasure for ourselves in heaven. Last week’s scriptures called us to focus our vision on the things that are of God. Today we are asked to continue to remain focused and to act on that vision.

The writer of the Book of Wisdom actually addresses this passage to God. He recalls the night of the Passover when God would lead them out of Egypt. But the author’s focus is not on what God has done, but on the faith of the Isra-elites that God would be faithful to them. They had knowledge of God’s Word. They put their faith in that Word. They awaited the salvation of the just. This was not a passive waiting but an active hope. We are told that they were offering sacrifice in secret, putting into effect the divine institution. This means simply that, by continuing to cele-brate their faith in God’s Covenant, they were preparing themselves to receive God’s grace and salvation whenever God would choose to deliver them. Though addressing his words to God, the author is actually encouraging his readers to imitate the faith of their ancestors.

We hear this same message in the Letter to the Hebrews. The author reminds his audience that their ancestors be-lieved in the promise of God and acted on it even though they did not live to see its fulfillment. Faith is the realiza-tion of what is hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Abraham was 75 years old when he and Sarah were told to set out for a faraway land where they would be the parents of many nations. It wasn’t until twenty-four years later that Abraham had a son. He and Sarah did not live to see their descendants prosper and be more numerous than the sands on the seashore. For that matter, God did not allow Moses to enter the promised land several hundred years later. But Moses followed the Lord anyway, and led the people through the wilderness out of captivity. The scripture tells us that he died in faith, not receiving what had been promised, but he saw it and greeted it from afar. This is difficult for all of us. It is hard to look for the vision of God and act on it when we are not sure that God is going to deliver on his promise in this life. But that is exactly what Jesus asks us to do.

In the gospel Jesus tells his disciples to sell their belongings and give them away to the poor. In doing so they will store up treasures in heaven. Heaven represents the fulfillment of God’s promise. He tells them that where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. Jesus is basically saying, “put your money where your mouth is”. If you believe in me, if you trust me, then do as I tell you and follow me. The promise is given to us in the parable. If we are faithful, using God’s gifts to us in service of others, when Christ returns he will seat us at his table, and serve us himself. To receive a place at the heavenly banquet we have to trust God, listen to his word and act on it in our lives.

The Maitrise Des Hauts de France French Boys Choir gave us a beautiful concert last Tuesday. The extraordi-nary performance included sacred hymns as well as American classics. About 300 people from around the city came to enjoy this wonderful evening. Thank you to Dennis Costanzo for organizing the concert and to all the host fami-lies who lodged our guests. For those who missed it, I urge you to check out their website. They really are incredi-bly talented.

The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary will be celebrated next Monday, August 15. We celebrated the good-ness of God, who, in taking Mary body and soul to heaven at the point of her death, promises the resurrection of the body and life everlasting for all of us. While not a Holy Day of Obligation this year, all are encouraged to partici-pate in the mass to honor our Blessed Mother and give thanks to God for the gift of salvation. Our masses will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Our annual Parish Picnic is in only three weeks, on August 28. The picnic begins with noon mass at Dunham Park. There will not be a noon mass in the church on the day of the picnic. Please see page five for details.

We are in the process of interviewing for a full-time Teen/Young Adult Minister to be shared with St. Pascal. We hope to have someone in place before the end of the summer and to resume the Teen Group after Labor Day.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
