Mental Health Awareness
Today is Mental Health Awareness Sunday. As I wrote last week, people are not mentally ill; they have a mental illness. It is not simply a matter of semantics but a way of looking at the world. While at times I fall into negative ways of viewing them, folks with mental illness or deficiencies are our brothers and sisters and should be given the same dig-nity and support that all God’s children deserve. Mental illness is often undiagnosed and is not confined to the homeless with schizophrenia or the elderly with dementia. Chicago has the highest rate of teen depression and suicide of any major urban area in the country (according to the
CDC, nearly 16% have attempted suicide in the last twelve months and nearly one third of all HS students reported feeling sad or hopeless).
Mental illnesses are disorders of the brain (biologically based) and can be treated. Half of all mental disorders show signs by the age of 14, nearly 75% by the age of 24. Fewer than 20% of the children/teens receive the treatment they need. Those with mental illness who receive appropriate care are as capable and productive as everyone else. Mental health and substance abuse disorders cost employers (and ultimately consumers and taxpayers) between $80
-100 billion annually. Please read Archbishop’s Cupich’s letter on page six.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the Book of Numbers Moses has asked God for help in governing the people. God tells him to appoint seventy-two elders to judge the people and sends his spirit upon them. Because two of the men who received the spirit had been outside the camp, the people thought they had no right to prophesy in God’s name. Moses replies that he wished that the Lord would send his spirit on them all. In the second reading St. James harshly condemns the wealthy who have grown rich at the expense of others. He also condemns those who live for earthly pleasures instead of focusing on jus-tice. Jesus is even harsher in the gospel. He condemns those who sin, or lead others to sin, to eternal damnation. But those who follow him and take care of the needy will not lose their eternal reward.
Numbers 11:25-29 James 5:1-6 Mark 9:38-43, 47-48

From the Pastor’s Desk
Today’s scriptures give us a very vivid picture of the dire consequences of sin. Jesus uses very graphic and terrifying imagery of the fate of sinners. The gospel is a reminder of how much the Lord hates sin because it destroys our relation-ship to God and to one another. Jesus provides us with hope for salvation and shows us how to attain it. On the one hand, we should have confidence in God’s love for us. At the same time, we should also be aware that our own lack of love can separate us from God forever.
In the first reading we hear of two men who, having received the spirit of the Lord, are prophesying in his name. Be-cause they were not in the camp when Moses called down the power of God, the people assumed that they were false prophets. Moses responds that he wishes that everyone had received the power of God. This ties into the first half of the gospel story. The disciples complain that someone who did not follow them was casting out demons in Jesus’ name. Jesus responds that whoever performs a mighty deed in Jesus’ name cannot speak ill of him. Jesus goes further, telling them that if anyone gives them a cup of water in his name will not lose his reward.
In the second reading, St. James harshly condemns the rich for their selfishness, telling them to wail over their impending miseries. The imagery he uses is very graphic. He tells them that they have fattened their hearts against the day of slaughter and that corrosion will devour your flesh like a fire. God will condemn those who withhold justice and mercy from the poor. Jesus likewise uses graphic imagery in the second half of the gospel. Anyone who causes the little ones to sin would be better off with a great millstone put around his neck and thrown into the sea.. Death by drowning is not very pleasant. But it gets worse. If your hand, your foot or your eye causes you to sin, cut it off. Jesus says it is better to enter into life crippled than to be whole and cast into the fires of hell. Jesus refers to the place of damnation as Gehenna, which was literally a burning garbage dump outside of Jerusalem. And just so we get the point, Jesus describes Gehenna as the place where ’the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched’. Jesus is pretty clear about the consequences of sin; and makes sure that we do not misunderstand nor take it lightly.
This quotation is a direct reference to the final prophecy of Isaiah; a stern warning about judging others as unworthy of belonging to the family of God. This echoes Moses’ wish from the first reading that all receive God’s spirit, as well as Jesus’ rebuke to the disciples against excluding those who perform good deeds in his name. He tells them that whoever is not against us is for us. Further, their good works are a sign of the presence of the spirit of God. St. James makes the same point. Those who give mercy and justice to the poor and the weak will store up for themselves treasures in heaven.
Jesus always gives us a choice. Today he points out that the way to enter the kingdom of heaven is to include everyone at the table and show the love of God to others by good works, mighty deeds of God, especially to the poor, the op-pressed, and the outcast. The Christian life is about a journey of conversion. We are called to put on the mind of Christ, to live as he did, and to grow in love and compassion for others.
Today we celebrate Seminary Sunday. We welcome Andy Bergkamp, a third year theologian from Garden Plain, Kan-sas, preparing for the Diocese of Wichita in Kansas. With God’s grace he will be ordained a priest in June of 2017. Andy will share his story and his vocation journey with us at all the masses. There will also be a second collection to support our Archdiocesan seminaries.
Today is also Mental Health Awareness Sunday. Please read Archbishop’s Cupich’s letter on page six and see the short Facts Sheet on page two. The Confirmation Rite of Enrollment will take place at the 10 a.m. Mass today. Please keep all our candidates, their sponsors and families in your prayers. Confirmation will be celebrated on Friday, April 15, 2016.
The Teen Club hosts a Family Service Day this Saturday, October 3rd beginning at 10:15 a.m. Please see page five for details. Also on Saturday, our annual Pet Blessing in honor of St. Francis will be held at 12:15 in the back parking lot.
I will be celebrating a special SPRED Mass next Sunday at 5:30 p.m., followed by light refreshments in the hall hosted by our SPRED Program Ministers and Volunteers. There will be a second collection next weekend for the Energy Needs of our parish.
Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The Women’s Center Bulletin Announcement for September, 2015
The Women's Center is a problem pregnancy help center. Because of the care and concern of our staff, volunteers, and benefactors, each year over 1,000 women who feel abortion is their only choice, decide in favor of life. We provide practical help, including counseling, clothing, baby furniture, referral services, etc. as needed. Looking for service hours, resume building, meeting super nice people or just wanting to make a differ-ence for the pro-life cause? The Women’s Center is looking for new volunteers Mondays-Fridays at our Cic-ero Ave location. 1) We have two Lobby Front Desk openings that we need volunteers to cover - Tuesdays from 1-4pm and Wednesdays from 9am-12pm. 2) We need a man who can lift up to 40 lbs. to distribute ba-by furniture to clients on Thursdays from 10am-2pm. 3) We have an excellent opportunity for up to four people at a time to prepare baby bottles for our “spare change campaigns” (perfect for students or friends). 4) In anticipation of “Respect Life Month” in October, please consider hosting a baby shower for mothers and babies. (We can especially use new baby clothes 0-3 months, new bibs, crib bedding, baby and mother hy-giene products and disposable diapers in sizes newborn, 1, 4, 5, and 6). For more information contact Paige at 773.794.8807 or [email protected]. We need 3 infant car seat/carriers, 2 toddler beds, 2 double strollers, and 3 swings. It will be a great help if you can deliver these to us. For our address, or if a pick-up by a volunteer is needed, please call 773-794-1313. The families who receive these things are grateful for your generosity.
The Mass Intention Book for 2016 is open. Please stop by the parish office to schedule a mass.
Please note the following:
No mass intentions are taken for
Holy Days or Holidays.
In order to give all parishioners the opportunity to schedule a mass for their loved ones,
we ask that each family use the following guidelines to schedule masses.
