The Women’s Center Bulletin Announcement for March, 2017

March 1st marks the beginning of Lent. During Lent with sadness we contemplate the agony and death of Jesus; but we also think joyfully of His resurrection. Similarly, many women in unplanned pregnancies are troubled and sad. They come to The Women’s Center and receive help, counseling and prayers. They are filled with joy after they give birth and cradle their baby in their arms. In 2016 we saved over 1,000 babies and saved their mothers from the agony of abortion. Are you looking to build your resume, meet new friends, or make a difference for moms and babies? The Women’s Center pregnancy resource center is looking for new volunteers to join Mondays-Fridays at our N. Cicero Ave. location in Chicago. 1) We are looking for bi-lingual in Spanish volunteers 10am-2pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays to help with interpreting. 2) We are looking for self-starters with flexible availability to be “on-call” Lobby Desk substi-tutes on weekdays 1-4pm. 3). We are looking for new volunteers to help in the Family Resource Room sorting/organizing donations for our clients. 4) We have a weekday opportunity to prepare bottles for our Spare Change Cam-paigns (great for a small groups or service hours!). To get involved, please call our main number 773.794.1313. We need 5 infant car seat/carriers, 3 toddler beds, 3 strollers, 2 walkers, 3 bouncers, 5 high chairs, 3 bassinets, 3 pack n plays and 3 swings. It will be a great help if you can deliver these to us. For our address, or if a pick-up by a volunteer is needed, please call 773-794-1313. The families who receive these things are grateful for your generosity.

Second Sunday of Lent

In the Book of Genesis, the Lord instructs Abraham to leave his home and journey to a land that God will show him. He promises to make of his house a great nation, filled with God’s blessings. And Abraham went as the Lord instructed him. St. Paul tells Timothy to bear his share of hardships for the sake of the gospel. He reminds him that God saved us and calls us to a holy life through the grace of Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and brought us life and immortali-ty. St. Matthew tells the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus, revealing his divine glory. Peter, James and John behold him conversing with Moses and Elijah and are overcome with fear. Jesus tells them not to be afraid. They raise their eyes and see Jesus alone, back to normal. He charges them not to tell of the vision until after he is raised from the dead.

Genesis 12:1-4a 2 Timothy 1:8b-10 Matthew 17:1-9

Second Sunday of Lent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk Today we hear the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mt. Tabor. In the context of Lent, the Transfiguration is a sign of hope and encouragement, a promise that God’s grace triumphs over sin and death. Our Lenten pilgrimage is not simply a journey with Jesus to the Cross, but a journey that takes us through the Cross to the glory of the res-urrection.

The story ends with Jesus and the disciples coming down the mountain. Jesus admonishes them to tell no one of the vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. The disciples do not yet understand Jesus’ mission. He became part of our human family in order to die on the Cross for our redemption. Just as the mountain top is a sym-bol of the Kingdom of Heaven, going down the mountain is a symbol of the broken kingdom of our humanity.

In last week’s gospel, the devil tempts Jesus to deny his humanity. So, too, here on the mountain Jesus could have denied his humanity and ascended to heaven in his glorified (transfigured) body. He comes down the mountain so that he can assume all of the sin, alienation and brokenness of our relationship with God into his body and nail it to the Cross. In his crucifixion, Jesus puts to death the power of sin. His transfiguration is a foretaste of his resurrec-tion with one crucial difference. In his resurrection, Jesus glorifies our human nature and makes it possible for us to join him in heaven.

Our response is to take up our cross and join him on his human journey through sin and death so that he may raise us up to glory. This is not easy. He gives us signs and miracles and sacraments to give us the vision so that we can carry on. In the first reading, God tells Abraham to leave home and go on a journey to a distant land. This is the spiritual journey into the unknown and dangerous wilderness. God promises Abraham a blessing unto eternity. Abraham trusts God’s word and goes out as the Lord directed him. Jesus trusts God and becomes the sacrament of our salvation. Lent calls us to place our trust in God by seeking true conversion that will allow God to transfigure us into his own divine image, healing our brokenness and restoring our unity with him and with one another.

Lent is a time for deeper purification and enlightenment for the candidates (and for us) who are prepar-ing to receive the Easter sacraments. Next Sunday the Church celebrates the First Scrutiny, a rite that asks the Lord to protect them from sin and the temptations of evil. Our parish will celebrate this Rite with Owen Haroldson at the 8 a.m. mass.

We had a wonderful celebration of Confirmation on February 24th at Our Lady of Victory. Thirty-five of our young people received the Sacrament from Bishop Wypych. Thank you to Mary Ellen Cassel-man, the catechists and volunteers for doing a great job leading them on their faith journey.

Our younger students are now preparing for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. A Parent Evening of Reflection was held last week to help guide our families along their personal faith journeys. The Rite of Enrollment will be celebrated this morning at the 10 o’clock mass. We have fifty-six chil-dren preparing to receive First Holy Communion on May 6th. Please keep these families in your pray-ers.

Due to a scheduling conflict, Chip will not be here this weekend to update us on the Orphanage in Haiti. He will be here in two weeks, on March 25-26. The second collection will be held the following weekend, April 1-2.

Our St. Joseph Dinner and Sweet Table will be held next weekend. The dinner will be Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The Sweet Table will be available after all the weekend masses.

The Multi Parish Mission, Wise Fools and Happy Stewards, will be held at St. Bartholomew on March 20-22. Please see page seven for details.

Plan to reserve your tickets for our Annual Red Ribbon Gala to be held on Saturday, April 1st at Poretta’s Banquet Hall. Please see page nine for details.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Our Sacramental Journey A new series of presentations on the meaning of the Sacraments

What does it mean to be Catholic today? How do we live our faith?

The Sacraments have both a visible and invisible reality. The visible reality we see in the Sacraments is their outward expression, the form they take, and the way in which they are administered and received. The invisible reality we cannot "see" is God's grace, his gracious ini a ve in redeeming us by the death and Resurrec on of his Son.

Holy Orders Wednesday, March 15th - 7 pm–8:30 pm

St. Robert Bellarmine

What is the place of Holy Orders in the Church? Why the priesthood and the diaconate? How did they develop and what does the future hold? Fr. Ed Salmon, St. Giles, will share his insights

into the meaning, symbolism, history and theology of the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
