Divine Mercy Sunday Our Chris an faith really is all about mercy, the mercy of God and the mercy that we are to extend to others. The Easter Triduum that we have just celebrated is the ul mate expression of God’s mercy. Jesus takes our sins upon himself and nails them to the cross. Through his Resurrec on we have access to eternal life with him in his kingdom. In bap sm we die to sin and rise to new life. At the eleva on of the host during the Eucharis c Prayer we affirm our faith: “Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory.” Every me we receive communion we are par cipa ng in

the paschal mystery and partaking of the true bread of life. So every Sunday is a celebra on of divine mercy. Based on a revela on to Sr. Faus na, a Polish nun who died in 1938, Pope John Paul II declared the Second Sunday of Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday. Sr. Faus na calls us to pray for divine mercy, to come to know divine mercy and to bring divine mercy to others. St. Faus na was canonized (proclaimed a saint) on April 30, 2000.

Second Sunday of Easter In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the early church community devoted themselves to the teaching of the faith, to the breaking of the bread, the communal life and prayers. The people praised God and enjoyed the favor of the en re community. In his first le er, St. Peter recalls God’s great mercy, gran ng the faithful an imperishable in-heritance through the resurrec on of Christ Jesus. He tells his followers to rejoice in this; for although they may have to face trials at the present me, they will a ain faith’s goal: the salva on of their souls. In today’s gospel passage, Jesus enters into the upper room in his first post-resurrec on appearance and bids “peace” to his disciples. He shows them the marks on his hands and side to prove it is really he. Jesus breathes on the disciples, impar ng to them the Holy Spirit. Thomas, who was absent, does not believe the others when they tell him the good news. Jesus appears the following week, gree ng them again with peace. He shows himself to Thomas, who believes and worships the Risen Lord.

Second Sunday of Easter Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we conclude the Octave of Easter, eight days of celebra ng the resurrec on of Christ. One of the recurring themes throughout this season is that of peace. In fact, the whole “Christ event” is about peace. Jesus comes to bring peace to our souls, the peace that the world cannot give. This peace takes many forms. One form of this peace is the security of knowing the promise of an eternal life of joy with the Lord. The Resurrec on promises that death is not the final word. Our par cipa on in the life of Christ, given at bap sm, gives us the peace of knowing that when our earthly pilgrimage is complete, we will be united with God and with our loved ones forever. Another form of Christ’s peace is serenity of heart. God is always present to us through the Holy Spirit to guide, nurture and protect us on our earthly journey. Our scriptures show us the truth of both these promises of peace.

The reading from the Acts of the Apostles shows this peace in ac on. The community of believers gathered in joy to celebrate the breaking of the bread and devoted themselves to prayers. The apostles worked many signs and won-ders, leading to the awe and support of the surrounding community and to an increase in the number of people who were being saved. We, too, par cipate in this peace and joy when we break the bread and share the Eucharis c meal in communion with one another. The Eucharist is the visible presence of the Risen Christ among us today, giv-en to us by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit.

St. Peter tells the early Chris an community that the resurrec on of Christ gives them a new birth in hope of an in-heritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for them by the power of God and safeguard-ed through faith. We are to keep the faith, even though we may face various trials in this life, so that we will experi-ence the indescribable joy of salva on.

At his birth in Bethlehem Jesus is given the tle “Prince of Peace”. In today’s gospel the Risen Christ says to the disci-ples, “peace”, and breathes upon them. They receive the Holy Spirit as Christ sends them forth, just as the Father has sent his Son. He gives them the power to forgive sins which, in this context, refers to the commission to bap ze. As Christ has given them his peace through the gi of the Holy Spirit, so, too, are the disciples to impart this gi of peace to others through the bestowal of the Holy Spirit in the waters of bap sm. It is through bap sm that sins are forgiven and the believer is born into the kingdom of God.

As long as the shelter-in-place remains effec ve, I will con nue to provide weekly updates on our current situa on and my weekly homilies taped video messages sent to our e-mail distribu on list. If you would like to be included in the distribu on please email: [email protected] with your name, address and email address. There are plenty of spiritual resources available on the app and the website, with links to programs for scripture study, faith forma on, prayer and many others.

We are all dealing with fear, uncertainty, and difficult adjustments due to the current health and safety concerns. Con nue to prac ce good health and safety, avoid focusing on nega ve outcomes (unless you can actually do some-thing about them), take a “news fast” to minimize anxiety, pray, meditate and con nue to trust in the Lord. Main-tain physical distance but stay connected spiritually to God and in communion with family and friends.

Please remember, that the parish health needs to be maintained as well. We cannot stay healthy without the ongo-ing financial support that enables us to take care of our employees, physical plant and spiritual ministries or to be in a posi on to resume normal opera ons when we are allowed to do so. Please maintain your regular Sunday and Easter contribu ons. The easiest way is through automa c giving either through bank or on-line. We have simplified the process to get onto Give Central. Please see page eight for further informa on.

Cardinal Cupich has issued Decree dispensing the faithful from the obliga on to receive communion during the Easter season, to pray a perfect Act of Contri on for the repentance of sins with the intent to receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia on as soon as it is possible to do so, and to keep spiritual communion with our faith community. The Decree can be seen in full on page six.

May the Blessings of the Risen Christ be with you always. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Reading 1 ACTS 2:42-47 They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need. Every day they devoted themselves to mee ng together in the temple area and to breaking bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exulta on and sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Reading 2 1 PT 1:3-9 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrec on of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salva on that is ready to be revealed in the final me. In this you rejoice, although now for a li le while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revela on of Jesus Christ. Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, as you a ain the goal of your faith, the salva on of your souls.

Gospel JN 20:19-31 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not wri en in this book. But these are wri en that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.
