Labor Day

Our na on will celebrate Labor Day on Monday, September 7th. The Church teaching on the value and dignity of human labor goes all the way back to the beginning of the Book of Genesis. God creates the world and creates humanity in his own image and likeness, male and female crea ng them, blessing them and giving them stewardship of all crea on. God looked out on his crea on and saw it was very good. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because he rested from the work he had done in crea on. In the gospel Jesus tells his disciples to stop worrying about the affairs of this world and to seek God’s way of holiness. He reminds them that the Lord knows their needs. Jesus tells them to seek first God’s will and all these other things will be given them as well.

Genesis 1:26 - 2:3 Ma hew 6:31 - 34

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

The prophet Ezekiel is appointed as watchman for Israel in today’s reading. God tells Ezekiel that he must inform the people whatever he is instructed to say or Ezekiel will be held responsible for their sin. God says to Ezekiel that, if he does not speak out, the wrongdoer will die in his guilt. But God also says that he will hold Ezekiel responsible for his death. In light of Ezekiel’s warning, St. Paul’s seemingly simple reading to the Romans takes on more significance. St. Paul says, “owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another”. He then lists a few of the ten Commandments and says they are all summed up in the one command to love your neighbor as yourself (Levi cus 19:18). Paul con nues and says, “Love is the fulfillment of the Law” and does no evil to one’s neighbor. In the gospel of Ma hew Jesus says, “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault.” Jesus says we then may win him over and if not, he in-structs us that we may need to turn up the heat. He says we should bring the fault before other witnesses and then to the whole church if necessary. Ul mately, the sinner who refuses to listen is to be shunned. Jesus then gives the disciples the authority to forgive sins and promises that when two or three are gathered in his name, he is there among them.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today’s readings entrust us with the responsibility for the spiritual well-being of our brothers and sisters, to call them back to the Covenant when they have gone astray. While we are all accountable for our own sins, Chris ans nevertheless will be judged guilty, losing our own salva on, if we do not make the effort to help others overcome their faults. As with all responsibility, prudent judgment and courage are required. But most of all it requires a sincere desire to reach beyond ourselves for the good of the other (and the community) and freedom from self-seeking mo ves.

In the first reading, God tells the Prophet Ezekiel that when he, God, speaks, Ezekiel has the responsibility to warn the Israelites. While the wicked ones will surely die, the prophet will be judged guilty for not warning the sinner to turn from his wickedness. Because God has chosen Ezekiel to be his messenger, Ezekiel is required to speak out.

Jesus tells the disciples the same thing in the gospel. If someone sins against you, speak to him privately of his fault. This is out of respect for his dignity. We are made in God’s image and anything that helps us grow in that image is a good thing. Only if the other doesn’t listen, should the disciple take one or two other witnesses so that the truth may be established. If we are going to cri cize another, we’d be er be sure that we are right and that our percep on of reality is supported by others. Since our goal should be to help the other person (the “sinner”) we need to make sure that our understanding is correct. Finally, if the sinner doesn’t listen, Jesus says to bring the ma er before the Church. This is important because the Church has the teaching authority of Christ and because the faith community will probably have an objec ve view of the situa on. We are not to “gang up” on someone or be part of a group with an agenda. Finally, if the sinner does not listen to the Church he is to be cast out. Jesus gives the disciples the authority to forgive sins or to withhold forgiveness if there is no repentance.

Remember that Jesus’ goal is unity and harmony among the faithful. Christ le us the Church to guide us on our pilgrim journey on earth. The teaching authority of the Church is to help us to a ain salva on by providing a framework by which we are to make moral decisions. We are all called to listen to the Church, but we are remind-ed that the goal is to act in love (St. Paul tells us that love is the fulfillment of the Law). St. Paul reminds us of the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself . We are to treat others as we would like to be treated. Jesus says that by doing so we will have won over our brother, restoring unity to our family and faith community. This requires prudence, a good sense of ming and courage.

Friday will be the 19th Anniversary of the terrorist a acks on our country, commonly referred to as 9-1-1. We will always remember those who died, and honor those who have served and con nue to serve to protect our na on. In a me of increasing violence, we need to be vigilant, but we cannot let fear destroy who we are. In this ex-tremely difficult me, let us all support and pray for our first responders. Let us also work to end the divisions and violence that plague our na on.

RMC Update: We held our second Town Hall mee ng this past Thursday to present the possible scenarios for what our parish future might look like. This is the star ng point for the discussions for our feedback to Cardinal Cupich. All parishioners are invited to ask ques ons, offer sugges ons and provide feedback from your experience to help inform our discussions. These scenarios are outlined on page five. There is also a short survey for your feedback on page six that you are invited to complete and submit to the rectory. The presenta on of the Town Hall mee ng as well as an electronic version of the survey can be found on our website.

Our na on celebrates Labor Day tomorrow. All the parish offices will be closed. Let us all remember to thank and to keep in prayer all the working men and women who make our lives easier, especially those working in environ-ments that put them at greater risk, and for all those who con nue to build up this great country of ours.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Masses will appear for registration approximately 10 day prior to the mass date. To register, go to the parish website at: srb-chicago.org Choose: Visit the church website Scroll down to: Register for services and choose the mass option If there are slots available for your preferred mass, select: signup: (it will check that box) Under the mass time listings choose: Submit and sign up This brings you to a page to enter your name, email address and phone number After completing that information, choose: Sign up now Once your registration is confirmed we will email you TIPS FOR ALL WORSHIPERS, What to Expect. We ask that you read and review with family before coming to Mass. Please bring and wear your mask in church. Enter only through the Austin Avenue doors and an usher will assist you to your seat. Ushers will guide you throughout the Mass. After the service, leave using only the designated doors. We appreciate your cooperation and patience.

Sunday Offering Update Dear Parishioners, We have been able to celebrate Mass publicly for the past six weeks, with masses on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. The Sunday weekly collections, including electronic giving, is holding steady at about 80% of our levels from last year. Thank you to all who have continued to support our parish in these difficult times. Regular giving normally falls off during the summer for a variety of reasons. Please remember that our opera-tions continue year-round. With the COVID crisis and the additional precautions required to run the church and re-open our school, we need your support. Please consider giving online at https://www.givecentral.org/location/147/event/2790, where you can make regu-lar weekly offertory contributions to Saint Robert Bellarmine and keep our vital ministries and services going. Alternately, you can also text-to-give by texting the word “Sunday” from a smartphone to 847-243-6058. This will provide you with a link directly to the Sunday offerings pages in Give Central. You can also scan the QR code provided here. I am asking you to please maintain your regular weekly donation level or to increase it, if possible, to ensure the viability of our parish. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Renew My Church Grouping Scenarios

Ini al Parish Scenarios for Discernment

Scenario 1: 2 parishes, 3 churches total Parish 1: St. Pascal and Our Lady of Victory (OLV) unite to form a new parish. St. Pascal is the loca on for all regularly scheduled Masses within a united parish formed by St. Pascal and OLV. OLV Church moves toward formal closure. Parish 2: St. Constance and St. Robert Bellarmine (SRB) unite to form a new parish. Both churches con nue to have regularly scheduled Sunday Mass. Polish ministry: This united parish hosts all Polish ministry in the grouping. The current Polish Mass held at St. Pascal ceases. Scenario 2: 2 parishes, 2 churches total Parish 1: St. Constance and Our Lady of Victory unite to form a new parish. St. Constance is the loca on for all regularly scheduled Masses within a united parish formed by St. Constance and OLV. OLV Church moves toward formal closure. Polish ministry: This united parish hosts all Polish ministry in the grouping. The current Polish Mass held at St. Pascal ceases. Parish 2: St. Pascal and St. Robert Bellarmine unite to form a new parish. One of the two churches is the loca on for all regularly scheduled Masses within the parish. The other church may either remain open for occasional liturgies (e.g., funerals, special Masses) or move toward formal closure. Scenario 3: 2 parishes; 3 churches total Parish 1: St. Constance, OLV, and SRB unite to form a new parish. 2 of the 3 churches con nue to host a regular Sunday Mass schedule. The other church does not have any regularly scheduled Masses and moves toward formal closure. Parish 2: St. Pascal Parish remains its own parish. Polish ministry: Parish 1 is the host loca on for all Polish ministry in the grouping. The Polish Mass at St. Pascal ceases. Scenario 4: 2 parishes; 3 churches Parish 1: St. Constance remains its own parish and receives responsibility for the territory north of Lawrence / Gunnison to the Expressway. Polish ministry: St. Constance hosts all Polish ministry in the grouping. The current Polish Mass at St. Pascal ceases. Parish 2: Our Lady of Victory, St. Pascal, and St. Robert Bellarmine unite to form a new parish. 2 of the 3 churches con nue to host a regular Sunday Mass schedule. The other church does not have any regularly scheduled Masses and moves toward formal closure. Scenario 5: All four parishes unite as 1 new parish with 2 or 3 churches with a regular schedule of Sunday Masses. Significant concerns exist about the manageability of a 1-parish scenario (sacramental work load, facili es, and school complexi es).

School scenarios:

School Scenario 1: Each school con nues in its current program. Schools must be self-sustaining and not require financial support from the archdiocese. School that are unable to remain financially sustainable will be considered for closure in subsequent years. School Scenario 2: St. Constance School con nues to operate as its own program, as long as it does not require any financial aid from the archdiocese. SRB School and PFGA become one school program, either at one campus or two campuses.
