    Solemnity of Christmas

The prophet Isaiah tells us that the people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. Unto us a child will be born who will be called Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. He will rule in jus ce and peace forever. St. Paul tells Titus that the grace of God has appeared, saving all who await the appearance and glory of our God, the Lord Jesus Christ. He gave himself to “deliver us from lawlessness and cleanse for himself a people as his own.” This light and hope become a reality as St. Luke tells the story of Jesus’ birth. Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem to be enrolled for the census. Because there was no room for them at the inn, Mary gives birth to Jesus in a manger in the stable. The angel proclaims the good news of great joy, a savior has been born who is Christ the Lord.

    Isaiah 9:1-6 Titus 2:11-14 Luke 2:1-14

    Fourth Sunday of Advent

In the Second Book of Samuel, God speaks to King David through the prophet Nathan. A er David voices concern about the need to build a suitable house for God, the Lord responds that he, God himself, will establish his house. The Lord promises that his House and Kingdom shall endure forever, for an heir will come from David who will be a Son to God. St. Paul ends his le er to the Romans praising God for the “mystery kept secret for long ages,” but now revealed by the eternal God. He tells the Romans that it is God who strengthens them and brings about their obedience of faith. In Luke’s gospel, we find the promise of God, u ered through the prophet Nathan to King David, being fulfilled. Mary, betrothed to Joseph of the House of David, is visited by the angel Gabriel. Gabriel announces to Mary that she will conceive in her womb and bear a son. Mary’s bewilderment is relieved when the angel declares it is through the Holy Spirit that she has conceived. And Mary, receiving the Word of God in her heart and body, gave life to the Incar-nate Word by responding, “may it be done to me according to your word.”

    2 Samuel 7: 1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 Romans 16: 25-27 Luke 1: 26-38

    From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent. We hear the promise of God’s love in our Advent readings. A thousand years before the birth of Christ, God promises that he will raise up an heir for King David whose throne will last forever. He promises that the people will dwell forever in peace. St. Paul praises God for revealing that this mystery, promised through the prophets, is fulfilled in Christ. In Luke’s gospel, the angel Gabriel makes this prom-ise explicit. He tells Mary that she will have a son who will be born by the power of the Holy Spirit and who will reign on the throne of David forever. On Friday we celebrate the fulfillment of God’s promise with the birth of Je-sus on Christmas morn.

Advent is a me of wai ng, of an cipa on. We have only a few more days to wait for Christmas. Mary had nine months to wait from the me of the proclama on by the angel un l her Son was born. It is rela vely easy to wait a short me in the excitement and expecta on of a joyous event. The longer the meline, the greater the uncertain-ty. While Mary certainly experienced great joy in the announcement of God’s promise, she also experienced uncer-tainty and some fear as well.

Remember Gabriel’s gree ng: “Do not be afraid.” She was to remember these words throughout her life. First in her conversa on with Joseph since they were not yet married. It was only through the interven on of the angel that Joseph came to believe what Mary had told him. Then in their journey together to Bethlehem for the census enrollment when the child was due. As we an cipate the Christmas story we recall that Jesus was born in a manger in a stable. While this appears roman c in our pageants which re-enact this blessed event, in reality, the experi-ence was one of discomfort in the cold and damp, cast out because there was no room at the inn. I can’t imagine that the experience of labor and childbirth is fun under the best of circumstances. No one went out of their way to accommodate a pregnant woman. It must have been very disheartening. Mary must have wondered where they would stay, what they would eat, or even whether or not the child would be healthy.

She must have also wondered what it meant that she had found favor with God. And yet, the words of the angel kept coming back to her: “The Lord is with you.” These words, the love and care of her husband Joseph, and the an cipa on of the joy in her child kept her going. Her wai ng was not passive resigna on, but an ac ve par cipa-

on in God’s word to her. She pondered all these things in her heart. She trusted in the Lord. She kept the promise in sight and did not let her hardships or uncertain es prevent her from coopera ng with God’s will. As we enter the days before Christmas, may our an cipa on of the joy of salva on be a me of expectant wai ng, trus ng in God’s will for us. In spite of difficult circumstances, doubts or fears, let us remember that the angel’s gree ng is also addressed to us: Do not be afraid. The Lord is with you. You have found favor with God. The prom-ise is addressed to us as well: Nothing will be impossible for God. And may we, like Mary, trust that promise, and respond as she did: May it be done unto me according to your Word.

Wall Calendars for 2021, courtesy of Lawrence Funeral Home, are available at the back of church and in the rec-tory. We are providing a free copy of Mother Teresa’s inspiring book Do Something Beau ful for God to our pa-rishioners and those who a end our Christmas masses. Please take a copy and enjoy these dynamic reflec ons of prac cal spirituality in our daily lives.

I would also like to thank you for your ongoing support of the parish this past year. Even in these difficult mes, I am humbled by the generosity of our people. Your financial support keeps our parish and school running smooth-ly, to pay our staff and keep the lights on and provide for our programs. I am grateful to all the volunteers that al-low us to keep the church open and celebrate our faith. And, of course, all your prayers for the needs of our peo-ple and for those less fortunate.

Have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
