Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the reading from Genesis, God says that it is not good for the man to be alone, so he creates the woman to be a suitable partner and the two become one flesh. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews tells his listeners that God did indeed become human in order to bring salvation and to bring many children to glory. Just as Christ was conse-crated through his suffering, he consecrates his brothers and sisters through their suffering for his sake. In Mark’s gospel, Jesus quotes the reading from Genesis, reminding the Pharisees of God’s plan for married couples and of the sanctity of marriage. He goes on to teach his apostles that the kingdom of heaven belongs to the little children. He tells them that those who do not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.

Genesis 2:18-24 Hebrews 2:9-11 Mark 10:2-16

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today’s Scriptures tell the story of the creation of men and women and how we are made for one another. The hu-man family is sacred. In the gospel, Jesus blesses the little children. God calls all of us his children and asks us to accept that love with the simple faith of innocent children. Openness, trust and love are the lenses through which we should live our faith. We are happier, less stressed, and better people when we do.

The Scriptures also talk about the sanctity of marriage. Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for questioning the permanence of marriage. He tells them that Moses permitted divorce because of the hardness of their hearts. Quoting Genesis, Jesus tells them that is not how God meant it to be: In the beginning God made them male and female, the man to be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Therefore what God has joined no human being must sepa-rate. In fact, Jesus says that when a man divorces and remarries he commits adultery.

This can be difficult for us to hear today, especially in a culture when nearly half of first marriages end in divorce. Clearly there are cases when divorce is necessary. This is most obvious when there is abuse, domestic violence or neglect. That is why the Church speaks out against all forms of domestic violence. It is a grave sin against the dignity of life and the sacrament of marriage. Clearly God does not intend for people to stay in these relationships. Other cases are not so obvious. Sometimes life falls apart. The faith community needs to be supportive, especially for the safety and security of the children.

But much divorce occurs because the spouses have unintentionally neglected their relationship, often overwhelmed by the stresses of life and financial anxieties, often because of unrealistic expectations. This is always a tragedy be-cause somewhere along the way love dies and continuing does not seem worth the effort. It is sad when this hap-pens because the hopes and dreams are dashed and cynicism takes their place. It is very sad because the children always suffer, even if their material security and safety is assured. That is why we, as the Church, must do all we can to support marriages and families, journeying with them and never judging, and remain with them and the children, especially after divorce.

Today is Respect Life Sunday, reminding us of the dignity of all human life. We are called to support the pro-life efforts and the social justice teachings of the Church which promote the dignity of the human person. It is important for all of us to remember that we are all made in God’s image. God loves each of us deeply and invites us into a per-sonal relationship with him. He also calls us to be Christ for one another and to see Christ in one another. In the very first chapter of Genesis, we are told that God made us in his own image and likeness; male and female he created us and saw that it was very good. Please take this teaching to heart. Our dignity as children of God begins with this pas-sage from sacred scripture. It’s a “feel good” reality that we should take to heart. God loves each of us deeply and passionately. Living this truth will transform our lives.

During the month of October, we are all asked to pray for respect for the dignity of all human life and to work for jus-tice for all people. We will be supporting the Baby Bottle Project again this year to raise funds for the work of the Women’s Center. Baby Bottles are available at the church exits. Please see page six for more details.

Last Sunday we celebrated the Rite of Enrollment for our Confirmation Candidates at the 10 a.m. mass. Please keep all our candidates and their families in your prayers. Deacon Bill celebrated the St. Francis Pet Blessing on Thursday for all of our pets who are cherished members of our families.

We will celebrate a special SPRED Mass today at noon, recognizing the dignity of all people with special needs, espe-cially those in our parish family.

This coming Saturday, October 13th, the Parents’ Association will host Bingo Night from 6 p.m. until midnight. The Sports Association will host Coffee and Donuts after the morning masses next Sunday. There will be a special Sports Blessing next Sunday at the 10 a.m. mass for all our student athletes.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Beginning this weekend our parish will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting

The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved almost 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church. fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of October 28. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. Also if you are making a donation by check, please make it payable to: The Women’s Center. Thank you!
