WHAT IS SPRED? SPRED or Special Religious Development is a program for persons with developmental disabilities begun in the Arch-diocese of Chicago in the early 1960's. SPRED founder and director, Fr. James McCarthy was driven to find a way to enrich the life of those living with developmental disabilities by stirring an awareness of GOD in the midst of ordinary moments of their everyday life and bringing forth an awareness of themselves as persons of dignity who are loved by GOD. Sr. Mary Therese Harrington and Sr. Susanne Gallagher joined Fr. McCarthy in researching methods of catech-esis and education and discovered the Method Vivre, a research project defining how persons with developmental disa-bilities could grow in faith. SPRED is the practical application of the Method Vivre. Since its inception, SPRED has continued to evolve and grow through the direction and oversight of the founding SPRED staff. In 2013, St. Mary Therese Harrington, Fr. Jim McCarthy and Sr. Susanne Gallagher received the Laetare Award. In reference to this award, in a press release, Notre Dame University President Fr. John Jenkins praised SPRED’s commit-ment to educating people with disabilities saying: “Insisting that a developmental disability neither tempers Christ’s in-vitation nor restricts one’s right to respond, they have ushered countless people to their rightful place at the Eucharistic table.” Today, at the 10 am mass, two members of our SPRED group will receive Confirmation. Congratulations William and Jill!

Fifth Sunday of Easter

In the Acts of the Apostles St. Peter declares that it is not right for the apostles to neglect the Word of God in order to take care of the daily tasks of running the Church. They appoint seven men, filled with the Holy Spirit, to this task. And the Word of God continued to spread. In his first letter to the early Church, St. Peter says that Christ is the cor-nerstone on which God’s kingdom is built. He exhorts his followers to become “living stones” in imitation of Christ by living Godly lives to build up his kingdom on earth. In the gospel Jesus tells the disciples not to be afraid. He is going to prepare a place for them in his Father’s house and will come back for them later. The disciples do not under-stand and they ask him to show them the Father. Jesus replies that because they have seen him, they have seen the Fa-ther. He continues that if they do not believe his words, they should believe in the works he has done in the Father’s name. Whoever believes in him will do even greater works because Jesus is going to the Father.

Acts 6:1-7 1 Peter 2:4-9 John 14:1-12

Fifth Sunday of Easter Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Jesus begins today’s gospel by telling his disciples “do not let your hearts be troubled”. This is one of the greatest lines in Scripture. Jesus tells us not to be afraid more often than any other phrase in the gospels. It is a very good lens through which we should view our faith and our lives. Everything Jesus teaches us is about the love and mercy that God wants to share with us, and how we can appropriate that grace in our lives.

Jesus begins the gospel with “do not let your hearts be troubled” because he needs to reassure the disciples that even though troubled times are ahead, everything is going to be okay. They, of course, misunderstand him. They will scatter after his arrest in the garden and be totally discouraged by his crucifixion. They do not trust in his Word. This is often true of all of us. We can misunderstand God’s will for us, and allow the cares and anxieties of the world to drown out the voice of the Good Shepherd. We forget that God is with us in our times of trouble, and can let our fears control us. That is why it is important to view our life and faith through this lens of God’s promise “do not let your hearts be troubled”. Remember the voice of Christ in the 23rd Psalm which we heard last week, “I will fear no evil for thou art with me...surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life”. The disciples forgot this promise in Jesus’ darkest hour. We need to see beyond the cross to the glory of the resurrection in our daily lives.

Jesus goes on to tell them that he is going to prepare a place for them and will come back to take them with him. This is the promise of eternal life. They misunderstand this, too. Thomas says, “we do not know where you are go-ing so how can we know the way?” and Phillip says, “show us the Father and it will be enough”. Jesus’ answers are astounding and should not be taken lightly. He says, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” If we want to realize the love and the promise we have to follow him. St. Peter tells us we have to offer our lives as spiritual sacrifices so that we can become God’s holy people. Jesus’ answer to Phillip is equally startling, “if you have seen me you have seen the Father”. He promises that if we believe in him or in the works he has accomplished we will do even greater things because he is going to the Father. Jesus is giving us the promise of the Holy Spirit (we’ll hear this next week). Jesus is claiming to be God; and if we believe him we will be able to overcome the world, too. A wonderful promise but it requires complete trust and an unconditional love for God that governs every aspect of our lives. What they forgot in the garden, the disciples remembered in their own darkest hour, as they were martyred for their love of Christ. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Let go of fear so as to live in love and compassion of Christ.

Thank you to Janet LaPlume Bauman and the Welcome Wagon for hosting the New Parishioner Dinner on Mon-day and to George Bedon and the Sports Association for hosting the annual Comedy Night on Saturday. I should have updates on both events for next week’s bulletin.

Today at the 10 a.m. mass we will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for two of our SPRED friends, Wil-liam Banasik and Jill Altamiraro. The local pastor is the normal minister of this sacrament, delegated by the Arch-bishop, for the SPRED program. It has been several years since we had a SPRED Conformation at St. Robert’s. It is always a joy to celebrate the sacraments with our SPRED friends and their families.

The Parent’s Association will be hosting Coffee and Donuts after all the masses this morning.

This coming Wednesday the school will host their Spring Music Program at 1 p.m. in Kernaghan Hall. Also on Wednesday, deacon Tony will celebrate Benediction at 5 p.m. in the church. All are welcome at these events.

The nation celebrates Memorial Day on May 26th, honoring all those who gave their lives in service to our country. There will be a special blessing for our veterans and military personnel at all the masses next weekend as well as the Memorial Day mass Monday at 8:30 a.m. Please keep all the men and women of our armed services in your pray-ers. The parish offices will be closed on Monday, May 26th in honor of the holiday.

The Parish Calendar Meeting will be held on Thursday, June 19. Organizations are asked to return their prelimi-nary calendars to the rectory no later than Tuesday, May 27. If anyone would like to schedule an event or use the parish facilities, please complete a request form at the rectory.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

If interested, please sign up at the rectory as to which hour you would like to stop by. Adoration is usually the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Please check the bulletin in case of changes. Adoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a creature before his Creator. It exalts the greatness of the Lord who made us and the almighty power of the Savior who sets us free from evil. Adoration is homage of the spirit to the “King of Glory,” respectful silence in the presence of the “ever greater” God. -Catechism of the Catholic Church, no 2628
