Thank you for your generosity!

We remember two events this week to uphold the dignity of all human life, from concep on to natural death. Pope Paul VI wrote the “If you want peace, work for jus ce”. This is not an op on, it is what Jesus asks us to do.

Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

The U.S. Bishops have declared this Wednesday, January 22nd, as a Na onal Day of Penance, par cularly mourning the loss of life of all the children who have died from abor on. We are all asked to atone for the sins of our own lack of respect for the dignity of life and for the sins of those who have par cipated in the taking of innocent human life.

Birthday of Mar n Luther King

On Monday, the na on remembers Dr. Mar n Luther King, Jr. with a federal holiday to honor the slain civil rights lead-er. As Catholic Chris ans, our faith tells us that every human person is made in the image and likeness of God, deserv-ing of the dignity and respect due to Jesus himself. Our Church strongly defends this dignity, and calls us to condemn all forms of racism and prejudice. The only encyclical le er that the late Cardinal George wrote to the people of the Archdiocese was a call to conversion against these racial injus ces. Please pray for an end to abor on and all unjust taking of human life. We should also ask ourselves, “What can I do to enhance the dignity of every person I meet?

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s first reading contains another of the Servant Songs of Isaiah. The prophet proclaims that he has been made glorious in the eyes of the Lord and that God is his strength. The Lord will make his servant a light for the na ons, that his salva on may reach to the ends of the earth. St. Paul addresses the Corinthians, reminding them that they have been sanc fied in Christ Jesus and called to be holy. In the gospel, John the Bap st sees Jesus coming toward him and proclaims, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world”. John goes on to say that the reason he came bap zing with water is that the Christ might be made known to Israel. John tes fies that Jesus is the Son of God. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Oddly, there never is a First Sunday in Ordinary Time since the season always begins the day a er the Bap sm of the Lord. Ordinary Time actually began this past Tues-day, and will run through Tuesday, February 25, the day before Ash Wednesday.

Today’s scriptures con nue last week’s theme of the presence of God among us, calling us to recognize that Jesus truly is the Holy One of God who brings salva on. Isaiah promises that the Servant of the Lord will raise up the tribes of Israel and become a light to all the na ons. God’s salva on will reach to the ends of the earth. John the Bap st bears witness that Jesus is the Messiah, and tes fies that he is the Son of God. In these short verses of the gospel, John makes clear five very startling statements. It is hard to overemphasize the impact that they would have on his listeners.

1) Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. John refers either to the Paschal lamb of Exo-dus, the sacrifice that frees Israel from slavery; the apocalyp c lamb foretold by the prophets Daniel and Zech-ariah, who will destroy all evil at the end of the world; or to the suffering servant of Isaiah, the lamb that will be led to slaughter without defense in order to bring jus ce and peace to the na on. Each of these three pro-phe c figures will usher in the reign of God. Jesus is all three archetypes in one, fulfilling all the prophecies of the Hebrew scriptures.

2) He is the one who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me. John is not referring to chronological age. He is claiming that Jesus is actually the pre-existent Word of God become flesh.

3) The reason I came bap zing with water was that he might be made known to Israel. John is basically telling the people that the bap sm they received from him doesn’t really mean anything. God’s plan was to inaugurate the mission of the Messiah through his coming to John for bap sm.

4) I did not know him. The one who sent me to bap ze told me that whoever you see the Spirit come down upon and remain, he is the one that will bap ze with the Holy Spirit. This is the sign from heaven that Jesus has been anointed by God as the Messiah. The people know that John is a holy one, one who speaks for God. It is on this authority that he points to Jesus. Bap sm by the Holy Spirit is something new, previously reserved for the prophets, and will now be available to everyone.

5) Now I have seen and tes fied that he is the Son of God. Although Jesus is his cousin from the womb, through the promises made known by the Archangel Gabriel, un l this point John doesn’t really understand the signifi-cance of God’s revela on. Only a er the Holy Spirit descends does John recognize and tes fy to the fact that Jesus really is the Son of God, a natural Sonship through the Power of the Holy Spirit. In other words, Jesus truly is divine.

A er 2,000 years this revela on may seem obvious or even so “true” that we o en fail to recognize the electrical impact it made on his listeners and should con nue to make on us. St. Paul reminds us because of our bap sm by the Holy Spirit we have been sanc fied in Christ and are thus called to be holy (our response) so that grace and peace may be ours (God’s promise to us).

The na on honors Mar n Luther King, Jr. tomorrow. As we remember Dr. Mar n Luther King, let us all work to-gether to end the persistent evil of racism (truly a cancer on our society) and recognize all people as our brothers and sisters, especially those we encounter in our daily lives. All parish offices will be closed on Monday for the holi-day.

There will be a second collec on next weekend to aid the Church in La n America. Also next Sunday, the Chil-dren’s Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated at the 10 a.m. mass.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
