Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Prophet Amos, wri ng around 750 B.C., warns the people of the northern kingdom of Israel that their complacent self-indulgence and neglect of the poor will lead to the destruc on of their na on and exile from their land. St. Paul instructs Timothy to pursue righteousness and to compete for the faith un l Jesus returns in glory. The gospel reading from Luke relates the parable of the rich man and the beggar Lazarus. Lazarus sits outside the rich man’s house wai ng for scraps from his table. The rich man dresses in fine clothes and dines sumptuously each day. They both die. Lazarus goes to heaven and the rich man goes to the place of eternal torment. The rich man asks Abraham to go to his house to warn his brothers of the fate that awaits them if they do not change their behavior. Abraham replies that they have Moses and the prophets; if they do not listen to them, then they will not listen even if one should rise from the dead. Amos 6:1a, 4-7 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Luke 16:19-31

From the Pastor’s Desk
Today’s scriptures call us back to the Covenant responsibility to take care of the poor. For Chris ans, this is not an op on. Jesus does not mince words. Failure to respond to the needy results in eternal separa on from God. The scriptures are not only meant to be a warning, keeping us focused on God’s will, but, more significantly, are an invi-ta on to open our hearts to the image of God in all people. When we deliberately try to see the face of Christ in those by whom we are outwardly repulsed, we ourselves are healed and are transformed into the image of Christ.
In the first reading Amos accuses the people of complacency, indulging in the pleasures of life and ignoring the needs of the poor. Because they are so self-absorbed, they fail to see that the na on is about to collapse. He says that because of their failure to act in jus ce for the needy they will be the first to go into exile and they will live in poverty. Within thirty years, the warning of Amos will come to pass as the Assyrians conquer the northern king-dom of Israel and take most of the people into slavery.
In the gospel parable the rich man dines sumptuously each day. Even a er he has eaten all he wants, he ignores the commandment to feed the hungry at his door. The beggar Lazarus waits outside the door for the scraps from the rich man’s table but is not given anything to eat. Jesus gives us a very graphic image of his poverty: Lazarus was so poor that the dogs even licked his sores. But when he dies he is carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also dies and is taken to the netherworld in perpetual torment in the flames. He cries out to Abraham to have pity on him and to send Lazarus to bring him some cool water. Abraham replies that the rich man received good things in life whereas what Lazarus received was bad. Now Lazarus is comforted in heaven while the rich man is in torment. Abraham goes on to say that the chasm between the two is so great that none can cross from one side to the other.
The rich man is not punished for being rich. He is punished for not sharing the blessings he has received with those who are less fortunate. He is so self-absorbed with the pleasures of life, like the Israelites in the me of Amos, that he does not even see the needs of the beggar at his door. He takes his blessings for granted. He has forgo en, or never knew, that all his wealth and blessings came from God. The proper a tude to receiving good gi s is to be filled with gra tude and joy. And the proper response is to share those gi s with those around us.
The rich man seems to have some good in him, though it does not save him from the consequences of his ac ons. He asks Abraham to go to his brothers to warn them about the fate that awaits them, too, in the netherworld. Abraham replies that they have Moses and the prophets. The rich man says that if someone from the dead goes to them they will repent. Abraham replies that, if they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not listen even if one should rise from the dead. This, of course, is a reference to Jesus’ own resurrec on. Those who do not obey the Covenant will not be converted by the words of Christ himself. Most people have some good in them and desire good things for their families, but this is not enough to gain entrance to the kingdom of heaven. St. Paul tells Timothy that to be a child of God one must pursue righteousness, devo on, faith and love. And to keep the commandments without stain or reproach un l Christ returns in glory.
The St. Francis Pet Blessing will be held this Friday, October 4th, at 4:00 p.m. in the back parking lot. All pets are invited.
We will celebrate a special SPRED Mass next Sunday at noon, followed by light refreshments in Kernaghan Hall. All are welcome. SPRED is our religious educa on program for young adults with learning disabili es.
Our Bellarmine Bash Fundraiser and Social will be held on Saturday, October 19. Tickets will be on sale in the ves -bule a er the Masses both this weekend and next. We will have a speaker at all the Masses next weekend to high-light the importance of this event for our parish.
Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

JESUS SERVED . . . WHAT ABOUT YOU? We as Chris ans need to put our faith into ac on, and SPRED is a perfect opportunity to
do just that. SRB SPRED serves individuals with developmental or intellectual challenges. Can you give up the busyness of your life on one Wednesday evening from September - May to wel-come people with special needs in a faith community at St. Robert Bellarmine parish? We are all longing for a place of peace & quiet; a place of respect & equality for all; a place without compe on & judgment; a place of prayer & communion. SPRED offers a program which embraces these desires which dwell in the hearts of all people. Please OPEN your hearts to learn about this ministry. For informa on on SPRED and how you can help, please contact Julie Oloroso at (773) 218-4754 or Michael Radcliffe at (773) 771-4033 and visit: h ps://www.queenofangelsspred.org/spred-anima on-videos.html.

Women’s Center Baby Bottle Project Beginning on October 5, St. Robert Bellarmine Parish will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by
offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved almost 40,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church on the weekend of October 5/6, 2019, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of October 26/27, 2019. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon the completion of the pro-ject. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. Also if you are making a donation by check, please make it payable to: The Women’s Center. Thank you!
