I will be participating in the Catholic Leadership 360 Review process this winter. It is part of the ordinary review pro-cess that takes place every five years or so for all archdiocesan priests. Part of the process includes the opportunity for all parishioners to provide feedback in a systematic way about my ministry, both strengths and weaknesses, through a simple anonymous survey available on the Archdiocesan website. It should take no more than half an hour. I would greatly appreciate your input in this process. The more people who take the survey, the more helpful the feedback. Some of you tried to log on during the past week and were unable to do so, since our parish was inadvertently left off the list. That has now been remedied and the survey is up and running. Please see Bishop Manz’ letter on page six for his commentary and instructions on how to participate in the review process.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The first reading from the book of Job today sounds very depressing. “Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery?” asks Job. He ends with the words, “I shall not see happiness again.” What is significant in the story is that Job openly and hon-estly addresses God, revealing his strong faith. St. Paul tells the Corinthians his obligation. He has been given the task to preach the gospel and pronounces, “woe to me if I do not preach it!” Paul preaches so that he, too, may have a share in the promise of the gospel. The gospel of Mark matter-of-factly portrays the happenings of Jesus. He goes to Peter’s house and cures his mother-in-law who then waited on them. After sunset Jesus cured many who were sick and, rising early, went off to pray. His disciples found him and together they went out to preach and heal in the whole of Galilee. Woven throughout the scriptures today are people, not asleep, but intimately involved in life.

From the Pastor’s Desk
Today’s scriptures tell us of a compassionate God who comes to us in times of trouble. In the first reading, Job is beset by great tragedies. St. Paul tells the Corinthians of the great hardships he endures for the sake of the gospel. And in the gospel reading itself, Jesus heals the sick, drives out demons and proclaims the reign of God throughout Galilee.
In our current climate of terrorism, violence and economic uncertainty we can all feel like Job when he proclaims that he has been assigned months of misery, that his days come to an end without hope and that he shall never see happiness again. He is crying out to God in his anguish. The story of Job confronts us with the question of why God permits suffering. Although we will never know the direct answer, Job can help us to shift our focus. In the midst of suffering we can continue to trust in God. The deeper meaning has to do with our understanding of God. If God is only a provider of worldly benefits, then suffering makes no sense. But if he is our Redeemer who has a salvific plan for us for all eternity, then we can persevere in faith in spite of suffering.
In this short passage from Job, we don’t hear God’s response or get the rest of the story. However, the Book of Job offers us several important lessons. First, Job has a good relationship with God that allows him to talk to God open-ly, honestly and even to question God’s will when he doesn’t understand it. He doesn’t understand why evil has be-fallen him because he is a righteous man. Second, Job never wavers in his trust in God, even though God not only doesn’t answer him directly, but also tells him that why he suffers is none of his business. Third, the tragedies that befall Job are worse than most of us will ever experience: great physical illness, the loss of all his wealth, the ridi-cule of the community, the abduction of his daughters, and the death of all his children. While not making light of our own difficulties, this can help us gain perspective. Many people suffer greatly in this world. The final lesson in the Book of Job is that God does deliver him from evil because he has persevered in faith.
In the gospel Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law and all who come to him, the sick and the possessed (the spiritually troubled). He tells the apostles that there are other villages and places that are in need of him. Our faith tells us that when we trust in God he will come to us to heal us, to give us strength to endure the trials of this world, and deliver us from evil. St. Paul reminds us that living in faith will not always be easy; but if we sacrifice ourselves for the good of others, we too, will receive our heavenly inheritance.
The ultimate goal of our faith is to deepen our relationship with the Lord and to have the trust of Job, so that one day we might experience the intimate union of love that Jesus has with his Father. The gospel says that Jesus went to a deserted place to pray. It is only by taking time from our busy lives and making room for God in our hearts that we can attain that peace that only Christ can give.
Catholic School Week was quite a success. The Open House last Sunday highlighted many of the wonderful things that make us proud of our school. Thank you to all the teachers, staff and volunteers who shared generously of their time to prepare the students to showcase our school. Our parish provides a wonderful environment of faith-filled learning and growth. Sharing our gifts and watching the children thrive make the sacrifices of the parish and the families worthwhile. I am hoping we will have pictures to share next week.
The Annual Catholic Appeal continues this week with the in-pew pledge process at all the masses. Archbishop Cupich has a short homily on CD that we will hear after the homily. This year’s theme, Come, Follow Me, reminds us that God has blessed us in order that we may share our blessings with others, particularly in passing on our faith to those who come after us. Because we participated in the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign, our parish goal is only 75% of the normal target. Our reduced goal is $25,273 this year. All (100%) of the funds collected above our targeted goal are returned to the parish. We would like to raise enough money to replace the sound system in Kerna-ghan Hall where we hold most of our parish and school functions. Please join me in supporting the Annual Catholic Appeal this year.
The Parents Association will be hosting Bingo Night this Saturday. This is both a fundraiser for the school and an enjoyable social evening of fun and games (in the best sense of the word). All are welcome. (continued on page two)...
