Pastor’s Corner All Saints and All Souls Day

Last week my god-daughter Emily asked me, “Do you like being a priest?” I responded very

quickly, “Well yes. I do”. “Why?” I told her, “I like being a priest is because it always puts me in the company of very holy people.” In my six years here I believe that the Saint Raphael Community is very holy. I know this because I see what they do, and I see what they have become: very devout and saintly people. “Canonization is not a pre-requisite to Sainthood”. All of us must strive to be “Holy/Saintly”. Saints are human beings who live every moment using their physical bodies to do good and intentionally bring the love of God into the world. Saints are people, who in the face of great disruption (anger, hatred, anxiety and fear) DO GOOD ANYWAY (as Saint Theresa of Calcutta encourages us to do). Never tire nor cease to do good — especially when you do not want to. Do good when people are not looking. Today is All Saints. Be Holy as God is Holy.

Tomorrow is the feast of All Souls. I often regard it as a day to especially remember those who may not have achieved holiness while they were alive. We must NEVER forget our beloved dead. Many who have died were NOT in a state of grace. Many, while alive, were so busy with their physical life they may have neglected the spiritual component. I pray they did not “intentionally” destroy God’s life, for spiritual death is possible. God gave us the SURE gift of keeping His grace alive and nurtured: Jesus in the Sacraments. Especially the Holy Mass. Every day I light a candle to remember and pray for the most forgotten soul in Purgatory. I pray that those souls who have wandered may find their way to heaven. May our constant prayers assist them in their journey to God.

Some Reminders From the Parish Business Office We are happy to have so many of you joining us for Sunday Mass and Adoration. We are grateful to continue to serve you, but we must keep in mind the safety and well-being of all. Please review the following loving reminders from our Parish Business Office:

    — Follow the requirements detailed on all signs and the direction of the Parish Staff and Clergy at all times.

    — All parish gatherings and meetings (aside from Mass and Sacraments) have been postponed until further notice. Parish groups and ministries are not permitted to gather at this time.

    — Making a reservation for Sunday Mass is essential to planning and preparing for the Mass, including staffing, ensuring ushers and volunteers for sanitizing, hosts, and the check-in process. Please be sure to make a reservation by phoning the Parish Office and leaving a message or via our website. You may do so until 3:00 pm on Saturday.

    — Bring your own seating for Sunday Mass. Beach chairs or blanket recommended (we are continuing to hold Mass outdoors).

Adoration is available 24 hours a day in the vestibule of the church. A face-mask which covers the mouth and nose must be worn. A distance of at least six feet must be maintained from those outside of your household. Gathering with those outside of your household is not permitted. Please do not sit in a circle or move near the Centennial Garden to do this.

    — Do not linger and mingle in the outdoor church space or in the parking lot.

    — Our Parish offices are closed to the public, but still operating. Please call or email with a request or need. Speak clearly and leave a number to return the call when leaving a message. Phones and email are monitored daily. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation very much!

Protecting Our Children Teens and alcohol: COVID temptations. Families have been cooped up for months now during the COVID-19 pandemic, and studies have shown that many Americans are buying more beer and alcohol than usual to cope with related anxiety and stress. These same stresses may tempt teens and young adults to experiment with alcohol, especially if it is readily available. Talk to your children about the dangers of underage drinking, even if they plan to stay home. Model good behavior for your children, too; if you do drink alcohol, practice moderation and safe judgement. Consider locking your bar, or moving alcohol somewhere out of reach from your children. From The Principal’s Desk Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends,

All Saints’ Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church and celebrated annually on November 1. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church; that is, all those who have attained heaven. It should not be confused with All Souls’ Day, which is observed on November 2 and dedicated to those who have died but not yet reached heaven. Although millions, or even billions, of people may already be saints, All Saints’ Day observances focus on known saints — that is, those recognized in the canon of the saints by the Catholic Church. Let us all remember our Baptismal call to live our lives to acquire sainthood!
