the

Mother's Day

This year the annual celebration of Mother's Day occurs on the Fourth Sunday of Easter. What a wonderful day to celebrate those women in our lives who cooperated with God to create new life and those in our lives who have nurtured our lives with love and compassion. Yes, we believe that when we are open to children we have cooperated with God in creation. In addition, those women who have said yes should be recognized. The “Book of Blessings” has a profound blessing of mothers that recognizes that all blessings come from God.

The most recognized date for the first Mother's Day in our country was in 1908. It was created by Anna Jaris. She worked tirelessly to make this day a national day in the United States. She even incorporated herself as "Mother's Day International Association" and worked for the rest of her life against the commercialism that had taken over her commemorative day. There are many instances of marking certain days for mothers in world history. However, for us it has deeper meaning because it falls during the Marian month of May. We hold our earthly mothers in high esteem and hold our heavenly mother, the Virgin Mary, in high esteem also.

This Mother's Day take some real time and thank your Mom with more than just a box of candy.

FROM FATHER STAN 3

Happy Mother’s Day to all those to whom that applies – mothers, grandmothers, adoptive mothers, expectant mothers, etc. Thank you for this vocation that takes so much love! As I have told others, I have a friend who, when sending congratulatory notes to new parents, tells them “[this child] will be the highlight of your life. This child will teach you how to love like you have never been taught before. That is her gift to you.” It may be very, very hard work, and they will squeeze that love out of you. A recent book, with the title, “Parenting: all joy, no fun” might describe it. I would think it would be the crowning achievement of one’s life, to raise a responsible person to give back to the world and to God.

Congratulations to the 20 Confirmation students from our three parishes who will be confirmed at the Cathedral on Tuesday. Confirmation is the once-in-a-lifetime Sacrament that completes the Baptismal grace, and binds people more closely to the Church with a special strength of the fullness of the Holy Spirit. While it is usually administered after the age of reason, it is not simple a graduation to adulthood in the church. It is primarily about the Holy Spirit and binding one to the Church. Anyone in immediate danger of death should be confirmed if they had not been before, regardless of age. Many of the people reading this were confirmed at age 9, 10 or 11 – so it isn’t about being an adult. There are two essential signs in the ceremony: the laying on of hands by the bishop, and using chrism oil to anoint the candidate, tracing over that same cross that was made on the forehead at one’s baptism. Confirmation is closely connected to baptism, and candidates also renew their baptismal vows at the same time. Please note it is spelled conFIRMation, not conFORMation. It is about confirming one’s baptism and making one firm in the faith, not about conforming to society or anything else.

The All Saints Music Festival time is here! Friday, May 16, gates opening at 6:00, music starting at 6:30. The weather is looking warmer, and we hope it is a clear night. Shake off this winter and enjoy being outdoors! Come to the event, and encourage others, even, or especially, those who are not much of churchgoers to attend it. It might give them a reason to check us out for other things, too. It will feature mostly ‘80s rock and roll, and the headliner band, Hairball, is known to put on a fun show with pyrotechnics. $20 pre-sale, $25 at the gate.

It will appeal more to the under 50 crowd (yes, the ‘80s were 30 years ago), but a group of people can be fun for everyone. For tickets and volunteer opportunities (2-hour shifts) see the community page for more information, or sign on to www.allsaintsmusicfestival, click on “more” and you will get to volunteer sign ups. Food and beverages available at the festival – nothing brought in, please.

The GROW groups met in Farmington last Saturday to put together the pastoral plan for the next few years. Some groups will meet again to touch up the 2nd and 3rd year plan. Many ideas came forward, some of them far reaching, some very easy to implement almost immediately. We will lay these out for every parish in the next month. I want to thank the GROW committees – each parish group had six meetings between February 25th and May 3rd. Many ideas were discussed, distilled and formulated into cohesive plans. It will give us a good start for the next few years.

We have a young family in Hampton that can use some help. Justin and Jackie Trevis have two girls, Serenity and Kaylee, ages 5 and 3, who both have significant medical issues, including a very rare disease called CDG type 1a. (Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation. Among their symptoms are failure to thrive, developmental delay, and cerebellar hypoplasia, which can include brain shrinkage. They are trying to raise money to attend a conference on this in San Antonio Texas, and to see a doctor there that has identified this condition. They hope to raise about $2,500, and are putting on a spaghetti dinner and silent auction at the Rosemount VFW, 2625 120th St. West, in Rosemount. This is Saturday, May 17 from 3:00-8:00, serving food from 4:00-7:00. For tickets or information, please contact Jackie at 952-217-7000 or see their website, http://teamserenitykaylee.webstarts.com They are also requesting some crockpots to use at the event – they will return them, of course. The family lives in the building just north of the Black Stallion. I have been visiting this family for about 18 months, and know them to be very hard working and informed people, struggling against a series of medical issues, including their eyes, Serenity’s heart, and other issues. Some of you will remember former member JoAnne Blakesly, who is Kaylee and Serenity’s great-grandmother. She was here recently to assist them as well.

The staff at St. Pius V would like to thank all of our volunteers who have dedicated so much of their time this school year to helping with Faith Formation and Youth Ministry Activities: catechists, kitchen helpers, classroom helpers, chaperones and many more. We could not do this without each and every one of you.

We are still accepting Easter flower/altar decoration memorials for the next few weeks to help defray the cost of the Easter flowers. Memorial donations are $15. Forms are in church entrances.

Music Festival on Friday Night! Little Log House! Gates open at 6:00. Be there for the first great party of the summer – it’s too big to be inside. We are in need of a few 10 X 10 foot tents for our music festival. We’ll have them back in time for your graduation party. Do you have one to share? Please call the office: 651-437-5546.

Congratulations to our Confirmation Candidates as they are confirmed on Tuesday night. We will be sending them forth at our Mass this weekend. A bus will be loading to go to the Cathedral at 5:30 in Vermillion, leaving at 5:45 sharp. All are welcome to join us.

We will be delaying Church Cleaning this year until the new heating system is installed. Announcement to follow but we expect sometime in August or September.

There’s a box in back of church for baby clothes. All poor areas are in need of baby clothes. The new or good used will be sent to several poor missions in the states.

Thanks for the combined effort of Saint John the Evangelist School in Little Canada and several generous parishioners, here at Saint Mary’s, we have forwarded 1710 toothbrushes and 617 tubes of toothpaste to Guatemala. God bless you for helping those less fortunate than we are.

June Midweek Women’s retreat. Some retreatants say spring is the best time of year at Franciscan Retreats and Spirituality Center. Come join us June 10 – 12 to see the flowers, enjoy the trails and explore your faith with our yearly theme; Peace be With You… All Will be Well. 4talks, opportunities for confession and spiritual direction and periods of free time for prayer, journaling and reflection. All meals are cooked on site by our Chef Judy.

June Silent Directed Retreat, June 21 – 27

In contrast to our preached retreats, our silent directed retreat pairs each retreatant with a spiritual director with whom the retreatant meets once a day, usually for 50-55 minutes. There will be opportunities for daily Mass, prayer services, and three short conferences on some aspect of Spirituality. The bulk of the retreatant’s time is free for personal prayer and reflection, as well as time to experience the early summer beauty of the Retreat Center grounds. Silence will be observed throughout the retreat from Saturday evening, after Night Prayer, until brunch on Friday. The retreat will begin with dinner at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday June 21 and conclude with brunch on Friday, June 27. Register by calling 952-447-2182 or online www.franciscanretreats.net

Happy Mother’s Day! The flowers on Mary’s altar this weekend are in honor of Our Blessed Mother and of all our mothers, living and deceased, in gratitude for their precious gift of life to each of us. These flowers are from proceeds of the pro-life corsage sale. Proceeds are used to support pro-life groups, for highway signs, pro-life pins and stickers for our youth. Thank you to all who supported this project and/or helped with flower assembly, ticket selling, and distribution. This is our 36th year for having this sale at Hampton.

There will be server practice for anyone who has completed 3rd grade and older Saturday, May 17 at 10:00 am. Please contact Sharon Endres 507-263-4571 if questions.

Thank you: The family of Marianne Nicolai would like to express their deepest appreciation to Fr. Stan for his visits and ministry and to everyone who gave us their condolences by words, cards, food, flowers or thoughts and prayers. We thank the funeral committee and choir for helping make our closure easier.

Children’s Liturgy: We are hoping to revive teaching our little ones, ages 3-6 the word of God during Mass. We need volunteers willing to help us. Doesn’t take much time. Call the parish office for information. We would like to start in June.

American Red Cross Blood Drive sponsored by St. Mathias will be held at the Randolph-Hampton Fire Station #2 Tuesday, May 27 from 2-7 pm. For an appointment call Diane at 651-437-3620 or Mary at 507-263-2305. If you’ve never donated blood before - please consider being a first time donor. It only takes about 1 hour. There is always a great need for blood. You would help save lives.

Cemetery Note: We would like to have the cemetery cleaned of any old winter items that may have been placed by a loved one’s site. Our church maintenance will be doing clean-up after that time. Thank you.

St. John the Baptist (continued)

May Devotion: 5th & 6th graders lead the weekly all-school rosary at St. John the Baptist Catholic School-Vermillion. The upper grades take turns each week during the month of May to guide students through a series of traditional prayers said on each Rosary bead to teach the story of Jesus' amazing life on earth. The key events in His life are summarized in five "mysteries".

Mary Crowning: Also this week, grades 5 & 6 will lead the rosary before Mass prior to the traditional Mary Crowning ceremony Sunday, May 11 at the 9:30 am Mass at St. John’s. The procession for this feast day which recognizes Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Earth will include parish first communicants in formal dress carrying flowers to be laid at the feet of Mary. The crowning takes place with a formal crown of flowers placed Mary's head by the children.

Just 20 years ago in 90 days time, more than a million people were killed and countless children were orphaned during this holocaust, including her family, neighbors, and friends Through the lessons she learned, her life purpose is to help transform lives and open hearts to God's love, finding peace withinthrough forgiveness and healing. All are welcome at Immaculee's inspirational presentation at 7 pm, Wednesday, June 18 at St. Mary of the Lake Church, 419 W. Lyon Ave. Tickets are $20 each. Tickets are limited so purchase yours now. KNIGHTS CORNER…

Today, Good Shepherd Sunday, is also the World Day of

Prayer for Vocations. The Knights of Columbus are very active in the promotion of vocations to the priesthood, but also of all vocations. Here is a prayer from their website, www.kofc.org: Heavenly Father, bless Your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers and sisters. Give those You have called to the married state and those You have chosen to live as single persons in the world the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of Your Son so that in Him, with Him and through Him we may love You more deeply and serve You more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
