Murder Mystery Dinner Addiction Recovery Ministry will hold a murder mystery dinner entitled, “Death and Taxes or The Peasants are Revolting” on Friday, Feb. 22, starting at 6:00 pm in the John Paul I Center. It is addressed to Bishop David Zubik and composed by a newly- formed organization of lay people from across the Diocese of Pittsburgh. You are asked to read the letter and prayerfully consider whether or not you would like to sign it. Your signature can be added electronically by sending an email to [email protected]. In your email list your name as you wish it to be included, your zip code, and the name of your parish. CCOC will not share your email address with anyone. It is requested that you “sign” the letter no later that Wednesday, February 13

Regardless of the church in which you worship and serve as a Lector, attendance at just ONE of these workshops is required for everyone who serves in this most important liturgical ministry. You choose the date and time that suits your schedule. Each session is scheduled to last for 90 minutes.

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred this year by Bishop David Zubik on the 8th grade catechists who attend the Faith Formation Program in the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes as well as the 8th grade students of Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy. The sacrament will be celebrated on Monday, April 1, 2019 at 7:00 pm in Saint Joseph Church. We were informed of this date by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and is according to Bishop Zubik’s schedule. The Saint Joseph Pre-School is now accepting registrations for the 2019-2020 school year. We offer classes for two, three, and four year olds. Classes fill fast, so don’t delay. Dear Parishioners, POTUS (the President of the United States) is constitutionally bound to make an annual report to the American people on the state of the nation. Invariably and year-after-year, we hear the President (whomever it may be) speak of our strengths and admit to our challenges. It usually has the sound of a familiar refrain.
As this letter is being prepared the current occupant of the Oval Office is just hours away from delivering the 2019 State of the Union address. Following that delivery commentators and news journalists will offer their reactions. In them we may well hear someone say that the current state of our union is disunity. The truth speaks for itself. There is political, cultural, economic, educational and racist divides that tear at our American fabric.
It all gets me to thinking. What if the Pope were to deliver a State of the Catholic Church or the Bishop a State of the Diocese or a Pastor the State of the Parish address? What would it all sound like in 2019? Yes, each would focus on the strengths that comprise the universal Church, the local diocese, and the individual parish(es). Likewise, the pope, the bishop and the pastor would also have to admit to the truth of daunting challenges, e.g., emptying pews, sacramental indifference, anger at clergy and the hierarchy, diminished giving, and disenchantment with all things Catholic. It is a dark and frightening list.
However, we must not allow the darkness to get in the way of the light, precisely because we are followers of the LIGHT. In the darkness of His day and the darkness of our own, Jesus speaks a message of faith, hope and love. Faith that sustains us, hope that keeps us going, and love that binds us together.
What would I suggest is the state of the Lower
Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes? First off, like the other 56
groupings around the Diocese of Pittsburgh, we are still very
much in the initial phase of “getting-to-know-one another” -priest
and people alike. We’re sizing each other up, learning of
strengths and abilities, testing the waters, and wanting to find out
more about four parishes with six churches. Some are even
venturing out and worshipping in churches that are unfamiliar.
How many who will read this letter have NEVER been inside the
Cathedral of Sharpsburg - Saint Mary’s Church which is
prominently visible from Route 28. Come and pray at the 11:30
Mass on Sunday morning. Or the quaint beauty of Saint Francis
of Assisi Church in Harmar (near the Hulton Bridge and not far
from the new Oakmont Bakery). Come and pray at the 8:00
o’clock Mass on Sunday morning.
The state of the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of
parishes is in its infancy, we are novices, everything is new, and
there is potential yet to be realized. I invite everyone to be a part
of it as we walk in the LIGHT of Jesus Christ, sharing fully in the
embrace of faith, hope and love.
