This weekend is known as “Good Shepherd Sunday” because in the Gospel, always tak-en from St. John, we hear Jesus speak of

himself as the good shepherd. A shepherd takes care of his sheep. A good shepherd is always by their side. Jesus is always shepherding us, and one of the principal ways he does so is through the sacraments. The sacraments are wonderful moments in our life when we come into direct contact with God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In this contact with divinity we experience God’s redeeming love, the love that gives life, builds us up, sustains us in all that we do, in all that comes our way. Our parish is entering into what I call the sacrament season. We begin with the celebration of Confirmation on Saturday and then move to our celebrations of First Eucharist the following weekend. Bishop Caggiano will confer upon some eighty young women and men the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We are pray-ing for them at Mass as we anticipate this sacrament. If you happen to recognize any of the young people congratulate them and encourage them. If you know any of them, tell them how important the gift of the Holy Spirit in your life has been and is now. The young need our witness of the power of God. Recall in last week’s Gospel, the resurrected Jesus explains the meaning of his resurrection and tells the Apostles that they are witnesses of it. So are we, you know. It’s the turn of every generation to tell the next that Jesus is alive, in our lives, aiding us from within. God wants to take care of us. He wants to shepherd us, and we need his help. We are thankful for his abiding presence in our lives. I forgot last week to place in the bulletin a notice about Confirmation for adults. In our diocese, adults who have never been confirmed may receive the sacrament on Pentecost Sunday from their pastor. What’s required be-forehand is a refresher on the basic tenants of our faith. I should have already begun as Pentecost is May 20 this year. I generally run our parish course on Thursday evenings, but we can arrange another time if that works for the people who seek the sacrament. Since I missed making the an-nouncement last week, we will have to begin right away, so if you are interested, please contact me this week. Thank you! I thank the Men’s Society for the delicious and fun breakfast they offered us last weekend. It was made partic-ularly fun by the many door prizes that they raffled after each Mass. The men did a really nice job, and the breakfast was a good occasion to visit with one another and to enjoy hot food. Again, the men donate the proceeds to provide scholarship money for St. Peter School students and to pay for projects around our campus. Thank you to all of our parishioners who joined us. Next weekend is In-Pew Weekend for the Annual Catholic Appeal, Joy in Christ, Our Gift to Share. (I like this year’s title, and I think it ties into what I wrote above.) The In-Pew portion of the Appeal is directed at our parish-ioners who are not registered with us and, therefore, do not

Your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal makes a differ-ence. CONNected Catholic is the diocesan ministry to young adults (age 18-39). The mission of this ministry is to accompany them on their faith journey. This ministry is vital to helping young adults stay connected to their sacra-mental home, the parish. We offer ways to engage this age group, including Baseball with the Bishop; annual pilgrim-age to the Holy Land to study Scripture; World Youth Day; Theology on Tap and more.

receive Appeal solicitation letters. Supporting the work of sharing the joy of Jesus Christ is the task of every Catholic parishioner, not just the registered. We are doing pretty well with the Appeal, but we need the assistance of many more people. You have heard me say over and over again that in order to reach our goal, we need more than 300 par-ticipants. Frs. Leonel and Bernardo will be speaking to our Brazilian and Hispanic parishioners this weekend. While many of them are registered, my sense is that the total is less than half. The In-Pew allows them to participate. En-velopes will be in the pews (making them look messy) and distributed by the ushers on your way out of Mass. Please think about supporting the Appeal and take an envelope. Thank you. Remember, the gift you give does not have to be large. Many small gifts quickly add up.

Sing with Understanding:

The King of Love My Shepherd Is

Every year on the 4th Sunday in Easter, our Gospel reading teaches us about Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Often re-ferred to as “Good Shepherd” Sunday, it is appropriate for us to sing Psalm 23. Although we will not be singing the 23rd Psalm for our Responsorial Psalm, we sing a metrical version of this psalm for our Entrance Hymn. A metrical version of the psalm is where the psalm is paraphrased and put into a poetic meter with a rhyming scheme. The King of Love My Shepherd Is, is one of the most popular metrical versions of Psalm 23. It was written by Sir Henry Williams Baker, a British priest and hymn writer who flourished in the 19th century.
