In the Gospel today, after one of Je-

sus’ disciples says: “Lord, teach us to

pray,” Jesus tells us precisely how to

do so by giving us the Our Father as

the model for all our petitions. It is

because of Christ, and because of the

loving kindness of the Father that we

now can pray with confidence.

Reading I: Genesis 18:20-32 Reading II: Colossians 2:12-14 Gospel: Luke 11:1-13 Abraham’s dialogue with God is bold and urgent. God listens and grants what he asks. Yes, the Lord will spare Sodom if fifty just men, thirty, or even ten just men can be found in the city. But ten just men cannot be found. The people of Israel had to undergo a long schooling before they learned that God would save mankind if only one just man was found. That one-man is Christ. Paul proclaims: “He has cancelled every record of the debt we had to pay by His Cross.” Like Abraham, we need to ask, seek, insist; and the Lord will hear us. We can speak frankly and inti-mately. A loving Father, He will give us the good things a father gives his children. We can trust, too, that, like a loving father, He will withhold those things that are not for our good. We pray at all times and together at Mass as God’s family, confident that our Father loves us and fills us with His Holy Spirit.

Cenacle of Mary With Eucharistic Adoration

needs of St. Paul Parish and its parish-ioners.

«¡Enséñanos a orar!»,

tiana.

Our Lady of the Angels Virgen de Los Angeles

In Cartago, Costa Rica, the seat of the diocese, stands a breathtaking Basilica, and inside that Basilica stands a tiny black statue surrounded by a grand golden mon-strance. The statue is a Madonna and child, and it is an approved Marian apparition in the Church as Our Lady of the Angels patron-ess of Costa Rica.

This small, doll-like image in black stone was found by a young girl on a rock when she went out to the woods to collect firewood for the days’ cooking. She hid the doll in her room, only to find it missing the next morning. When she returned to the woods to complete her day’s chore once again, the figure was back where she had found it the day before. This cy-cle continued for three days, with Juanita hiding the figure more carefully each evening, and always find-ing it gone from her room and back on that same rock in the morning. Fearful of what this could mean, she brought the lit-tle figurine to her parish priest, who recognized it as an image of the Madonna and child and began to suspect something heavenly was at work.

He placed the figure in the tabernacle and said Mass, praying for revelation. When the Mass was finished and the tabernacle opened, the figure had once again disappeared and was found on the rock in the woods. A church was built there and the apparition was eventually approved by the Church. To this day, Our Lady of the Angels, or the Negrita (Little Black One), is highly revered by the Costa Rican faithful. On her feast day, August 2, each year, millions of people visit the Basilica to vener-ate this miraculous mother and intercessor. A tradi-tional pilgrimage on foot is traversed by many peo-ple from every corner of the country to pay homage to this mother whom they honor as protectress and guide.

Next Sunday, July 31st, All parishioners are invited to the celebration of the Holy

Eucharist in honor to our Lady of the Angles at 12noon in Spanish followed by

luncheon at 1pm in church Hall
