Welcome our newly
“Confirmed In Christ”
St. Bronislava, Plover
Alicia Barber
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Twice in three days Bishop Callahan is visiting our St. Paul Parish. He was here Friday at an Evening Prayer service celebrating the existence of the Diocese of La Crosse for 150 years. He came back again Sun-day to celebrate Confirmation for St. Paul, St. Francis Xavier, St. Patrick & St. John the Baptist parishes. Congratulations to these newly confirmed. May you welcome the Holy Spirit into your lives in the years to come.
In the May 2018 issue of Give Us This Day, pp. 5-
6, Bishop Robert Morneau, the auxiliary bishop emeritus of Green Bay diocese, writes about his expe-riences in celebrating Confirmation for over forty years. He says a key word for this sacrament is the word “come” as in “Come, Holy Spirit.”
Some parishes require the students to write a letter to the bishop explaining why they want to be con-firmed. One letter concluded with a candidate wonder-ing if the bishop really reads all those letters. She said “if you do, I would appreciate it if you say the words ‘moon Doogie’ somewhere in the service”. Bishop Morneau did work those two words into the ceremony. He also writes that occasionally someone will say to him at a confirmation, “You confirmed me 25 years ago and I am still practicing my faith and love the Church.” He enjoys hearing that but wonders how many confirmed have drifted from the Church. Some of those confirmed let the Holy Spirit come and others refuse to let the Spirit enter their lives.
So what about these comings? One confirmation that stood out for him took place in a home where a high school junior was dying of cancer. He went to the farmhouse and anointed and confirmed her before he went to her parish to confirm her classmates. She was surrounded by her family, her oncologist and other relatives. She died a few days later. Come, was the love song that called her home. “Come, Holy Spirit.”

Pope Francis Encyclical Letter
On Care of Our Common Home
Laudato Si
More than fifty years ago, with the world teetering on the brink of nuclear crisis, Pope St. John XXIII wrote an En-cyclical which not only rejected war but offered a proposal for peace.
St. John Paul II became increasingly concerned about this issue. In his first Encyclical he warned that human beings frequently seem to see no other meaning in their natural environment than what serves for immediate use and con-sumption.
Pope Benedict asked us to recognize that the natural envi-ronment has been gravely damaged by our irresponsible behavior.
In this Encyclical, I would like to enter into dialogue with all people about our common home. I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet.
