From the Pastor’s Desk….

The Gospel today (Mt. 25:1-13) unveils another parable of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have ten

virgins; five were wise and five were foolish. The only criterion in declaring five wise and the

other five foolish was the decision they made. The five who decided to bring oil with them were

able to welcome the groom, while the other five who were concerned only with the present (and

not about the future) ran out of oil, left to buy more, and found themselves locked out when the

groom came.

In this parable, Jesus uses the image of “oil”, which burns to provide light. The ten virgins repre-

sent all of us who have been baptized and called by God to share eventually in the eternal ban-

quet of heaven. The oil in this context is much more than the ordinary lamp oil. Here it stands for

faith, hope and love. We were filled with the “oil” of God’s life and grace at the time of our

Baptism, strengthened in Confirmation, and continuously “refilled” through the other sac-

raments. However, we can run out of “oil” and empty our souls through our wrongdoings and

sins.

Jesus teaches us in the Sermon on the Mount that “our light should shine so others might see the

goodness of our acts” (Mt. 5:16). Thus, we also have the responsibility to use the “oil” of God’s

gifts not only for ourselves but to lead others to Him by the witness of our lives.

Jesus loves each of us and died for each of us. However, we have to make the decision to

choose him. We cannot rely on others’ faith or spirituality to save us if we ourselves choose to

turn away from Him. We will not want to have the door to the wedding feast of heaven closed to

us, nor will we want to hear Jesus say to us “I do not know you”.

Thus, in order to be prepared for the coming of Jesus, our groom, we should lead lives totally fo-

cused on God’s goodness and love. God provides all the help we need not to run out of the oil of

faith hope, and love. Let us accept this help and choose to keep the flame of God’s life and love

burning brightly in our daily lives!

Special thanks…to all who participated in our In-Pew Commitment Weekend to support the 2017

Annual Catholic Appeal. More than 125 parishioners very generously pledged a total of $8,300.

This is an admirable response, but we’re still short by $8,000 to reach our goal of $75,301.

I strongly believe in our parish family’s love and helpfulness. If you haven’t done so, please fill

up a pledge form (available at the back of the church) and give this to the rectory office so we

can reach our goal. God cannot be outdone in generosity; He is sure to return your kindness a

hundredfold!

God bless you!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL CORNER

Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information 718 591-6536

There was great joy here at St. Nicholas of Tolentine on Sunday as 40 of our Faith Formation children dressed as saints enthusiastically participated in the Mass. Each week the catechists will be focusing on several of the saints. Our hope is that by May, the children would have come to be familiar with at least these 40 saints.

The picture below shows Maria Cruz and Rigoberto Castillo hard at work sewing the various costumes, trying hard to include as many details as possible to make the saint known. However, the name of each saint was pinned to the costume. RCIA Reunion of former catechumens and candidates on Saturday, November 4th.

The pictures below are of the two groups who having enjoyed a delicious meal together were participating in a shared experience. Father John Gribowich led one group in English and Father Anthony Rosado led another in Spanish. The main presentation focused on our being disciples of Jesus. Participants spoke of their desire to continue growing in the faith and of be-ing more involved in our parish life.
