Discipleship, it seems, is not a halfway venture for the half- hearted. Disciples must be willing to give up anything and everything. But something much more valuable than earthly possessions awaits those who follow Jesus. Throughout the summer we have been following Jesus on his journey in the Gospel of Luke. In this Sunday’s Gospel selection Jesus tells us that those who truly wish to be his followers will renounce all possessions, carry their cross and come after him. As if to illustrate what such renunciation might require, we also hear St. Paul challenge his friend Philemon to let go of a valuable possession—his slave Onesimus.

Discipleship, it seems, is not a halfway venture for the half-hearted. Disciples must be willing to give up anything and everything. But something much more valuable than earthly possessions awaits those who follow Jesus. The reading from the book of Wisdom reminds us that earthly “possessions” lose their significance when we, like Jesus, surrender our lives to the infinite wisdom of God.
