November 8, 2015 Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Stewardship In Action – Participation By All

It’s Monday morning as I write this. The sun is in and out and a few sprinkles linger. It has been a very busy weekend, not only here at the parish, but throughout the area. Because of All Hallows Eve, more commonly known as Halloween, there was much activity. Last Friday, the younger grades came dressed in their costumes and many of the parents brought treats and goodies to share and celebrate.

About a half-hour before school was to end, beginning with our Kindergarteners, our primary graders all went to the other classrooms in a procession of “showing off” their costumes. As they passed from room to room, parents preceded and followed in order to get pictures and videos. It was great fun. The faculty dressed as “dominoes” so I had an easy costume to assemble.

The rain and the wind of the weekend changed many plans. We moved our Treats in the Trunk to the school gym, which provided much needed shelter. We processed after 5pm Mass out the Gathering Space into the Parish Center, down the stairs through the Multi-Purpose Room (we’ve got to get a better name for that) and finally into the school without getting too wet. It was a delightful scene filled with many saints and heroes and heroines.

This morning John Grausum, his facilities crew and I were assessing some damage. Clogged drains caused minor mishaps. A snapped large branch on the property across from the upper parking lot fell into the property but avoided any power lines. A blessing indeed! And finally, someone crashed into the bank just in front of the St. Michael Parish sign on Eastside St. SE, gouging out a large chunk of grass and dirt, spraying it on the sign. Fortunately, the car stopped short without hitting the sign.

I mention all this because things so often go unnoticed and behind the scenes, yet it takes time and money to fix and adjust all that happens, just like at home.

Also, as we were walking around, I stopped at the St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bank and visited a bit with the dozen or more folks who were sorting through bags of clothing and other items, hanging them up, placing them in bins and rejecting items that were just too far gone. They were talking, drinking sips of coffee, sort-ing, working, and giving of their time and talent to help others. Every day of the week there are groups of parishioners working to help others who come to us in need and we generously offer hospitality and welcome.

As I left the Clothing Bank, I saw a group of parishioners helping to sort through the items brought for the Thurston County Food Bank. Again, quietly, every month we collect more food and financial aid than any other church or group in the county. We don’t know who is helped. We give freely and lovingly because we are disciples of Jesus Christ.

My last stop was to deposit my Sunday envelope with the “Monday Morning Counters” who faithfully show up each week to count the collection, balance and reconcile checks, paper money and loose change. This week they also gathered over 350 Stewardship of Treasure Commitment Cards. Behind the scenes, without fanfare or much notice, they joyfully offer their stewardship of time and talent on our behalf.

As I write this, I am watching the children from the school come over for lunch. Teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers provide a safe and secure environment for our children to learn and flourish in their faith. What joy and blessings there are at St. Michael School. Wouldn’t you want your child to attend? (Cont. page 3)

This is all in the context of Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response. We are entering the second week of our Stewardship of Treasure Renewal. Thank you very much to all of you who made a financial commit-ment to the parish for 2016. If you have not yet had the opportunity to do so, please pray, discuss and make your pledge this week. You can make a pledge online at our website. If you give through EFT, please make sure that you update your giving.

Lastly, I want to thank Robin and Jack Bucknell for their witness talk this past weekend. Their honest and heartfelt testimony spoke to the core of stew-ardship – that God wants our hearts. God desires us to grow in holiness and to one day become saints with Him in heaven. Please join Robin and Jack and the many parishioners in making a conscious, prayerful commitment to share a planned portion of your household income for the ministry of St. Michael Parish. Thank you.

In Christ, I love you,

Please Support the ACA in your Giving Tuesday Plans!

As a spin-off of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving is a special day created a couple years ago as a National Day of Giving to inspire and encourage charitable giving. And what better reason to give than to support over 60 ministries and services throughout Western Washington? Your gift of any amount to the Annual Catholic Appeal is welcome and will make a huge difference! We hope you will participate!

Coffee and Donuts after Mass

We hope you enjoyed the new coffee and donut service after the morning Masses downtown last Sunday. It’s how we’ll do things from now on - no more lines! There will, however, be a free-will offering container on the tables each Sunday. Your generous donations will allow us to continue this level of hospitality every week!

Our St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bank needs your help!

Fall is here and winter is just around the corner. The poor and homeless of our community need blankets and sleeping bags. Towels, new socks, underwear, and winter coats are always in short supply. Your generosity is well known and greatly appreci-ated by the broader community we serve, especially families with children. Many are single parent households for whom the struggle is especially difficult. If you would like to experience the difference your generosity makes in the lives of the less fortunate, give us a call.

Ed Knuckey (360) 528-9525

Thank you! Our request for people to help “St. Pete’s Needlers” stuff pillows for patients was a resounding success! They tell us they now have plenty of help for this wonderful ministry.

Parking Reminder

Please use only designated parking stalls to park your vehicle. Parking outside the designated areas slows the entry and exit of emergency vehicles.

As well, the load and unload parking stall by the St. Joseph Chapel is there to facilitate an easy drop off of clothing for the St. Vincent De Paul clothing bank and drop off/pick up of parishio-ners for Mass who cannot walk a great distance. Please do not use this as a regular parking place during Mass or for any longer than needed to drop or pick up.

Eastern Catholics?

Catholic but not Roman Catholic? Orthodox but Catholic? Elected bishops and married priests? Ever wonder about those “other” Catholics? Byzantine? Greek-Catholic? Maronite? Chaldean? How can they be so different and yet still be Catholic? Here’s a chance to get “in the know” and have those questions answered. A great opportunity for catechists, catechumens, RCIA leaders, teachers and any-one else who has ever wondered about the Eastern rites of the Church.

Saturday, November 14 at Holy Theophany Monastery, 10220 66th Avenue, SE in Lacey.

Led by Archpriest Lawrence and beginning with Byzantine Divine Liturgy (Mass) at 8:45am and concluding at 4:00pm.

A reflection on 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 In this passage Paul gives us at least ten reasons to give generously:

1. Giving is the best investment you can make. Like the harvest, giving is planting seed. The farmer will reap far more than what was sown. What you give to the Lord He multiplies – your time, gifts, ambitions and money.

2. Giving should be fun. Giving should never be forced or grudging, but rather voluntary and cheerful ‘for God loves a cheerful giver.’ The Greek word for cheerful is hilaros. Our giving should be hilarious! It should be fun to give.

3. Giving takes away the burden of financial worry. Giving does not mean handing over financial responsibility to God – but it does mean handing over the worry and the burden of it.

4. Giving ‘enriches’ you. When God invites us to give, he is pleading to our reason, not to our emotions. Our characters will be enriched and God will be praised.

5. Giving transforms your character. Giving purges the character from the constricting grip of materialism that destroys lives.

6. Giving inspires others. Your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but it is also overflowing in the many expressions of thanks to God.

7. Giving meets people’s needs. Generous giving blesses other people and supplies the needs of God’s people.

8. Giving is evidence of real faith. Generous giving is an act of obedience and an act of trust – you are saying that it is God, not yourself or anyone else, who ultimately provides for your needs.

9. Giving makes you a stakeholder in the church. When you share in the community’s needs, you reap the com-munity’s benefits. When someone comes to know Christ through the community you share in the blessing.

10. Giving is a response to God’s gift to you. God so loved you that he gave his one and only Son so that you might have eternal life (John 3:16). Our giving is a response to God’s amazing grace. His ‘indescribable gift’.
