PASTOR’S NOTEBOOK – AUGUST 31, 2014 – TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“New Beginnings…”

Where do I start?

Coming back from vacation (which was such a gift and grace) I find the parish revving into high gear. I want to highlight some of the ministries and events that have happened or are coming soon.

This past Tuesday we began a new school year at St. Michael. We ended last year with the ground-breaking for the new covered play area that would be used daily by the school and also by the Parish and St. Mike’s Tikes. We began this new school year by blessing the new play structure and having a ribbon cutting ceremony as well as Mr. Geraghty, our school principal, shooting the first basket. If you haven’t had a chance to walk down and see the new covered play area, please take some time after Mass and walk down to the school. You’ll notice how nicely it ties in to the lines of the school and the colors of the Parish Center. I am grateful to Stan Moon, John Grausam, and all the members of the Building Committee that assisted with the project. Construc-tion was funded through savings from the SMART Auction and school reserves. I want to thank Don Johnson, an alumnus of the school and longtime parishioner and his company, Andy Johnson and Sons, for their fine work once again for the Parish.

A few other “new beginnings” with the school included a Deanery Mass for all Catholic schools in our area at St. Martin’s this past Thursday. Archbishop Sartain was the celebrant as all the students and faculty members joined together for the first time as one to begin a new school year. It was a wonderful celebration and I want to thank Michelle Clinton and John Grausam and the Facilities Crew for helping with set-up and take-down. It was a lot of work and well worth it!

Then, on Friday, we celebrated our first “All School Mass” at 9:00 a.m. We do this every first Friday of the month and on all Holy Days. Please know that you are most welcome to come and pray with the students.

Please mark your calendars for Friday, September 26 for the SMART/Parish Family/Feast Day celebration, or as we call it, the Family Night Extravaganza! Check further in the bulletin for more details. This will be a fun evening!

Now on to Faith Formation. It is time to register (if you haven’t already) for our “Making Disciples” training opportunities from preschool through high school and beyond. Check out the page in the bulletin. Edge and LifeTeen are preparing for their Fall kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 14. Parents, please support and enable your teens to be part of this important ministry.

We give thanks to God and congratulate our newly ordained, Fathers Brian Thompson and Fr. Dean Mbuzi. I am grateful for all that you have contributed to their formation and will continue to do so for Fr. Brian. Let us continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life from our parish. Remember, priests come from our families. It is essential that you encourage and nurture vocations in your home. Since a call from God these days seems almost abnormal in our culture, all the more reason to listen and nurture it as special gift.

Lastly, I invite all parents with children at home to join me and the Faith Formation staff next Sunday, Sept. 14 from 1-3 pm in the School Gym to discuss the critically important topic of “Nurturing Lifelong Faith in Your Children.” I look forward to this opportunity to be with you. I hope to share some thoughts about Germany and the Church next time. It’s great to be back. In Christ, I love you.

Stewardship

As we review and reflect upon the readings for any given Sunday, it is good to try to connect what is proclaimed with our lives and our understanding of stewardship. Some-times it may be an entire passage, like the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Other times it may be just a phrase, or even a single word.

In today’s first reading from Ezekiel, God declares, “You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the House of Israel.” Ezekiel lived and prophesied some 600 years before the birth of Christ. If we listen carefully and attentively to Holy Scripture, we may notice that Jesus almost always refers to Himself as the Son of Man. Here is a reference to that phrase centuries before He came. The other key word in that sentence is the word “watchman.”

We may think of a watchman as a kind of security guard, but that is not exactly what the word meant in Ezekiel’s time. It was synonymous with “steward.” This is God declaring that Jesus, the Son of Man, is appointed the steward of Israel and all of us as well. The appointment is from God, not from a human. We are called in the same way, by God, to be good stewards.

Activities in St. Michael Parish will begin to pick up now that school has started. We have filed our Annual Report with the Archdiocese and will publish the Parish PY2014 Annual Report in October. Our next mailing of the Statements of Giving to our parishioners will happen the first week of October and will show how much each Parish family has contributed since January 1, 2014 (our giving records are based on a calendar year for tax purposes, and used by the Parish on a pastoral year (fiscal year) basis. MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

ALTAR SERVERS Altar Servers serve at the Lord’s table for Sundays, Holy Days, funerals, and wedding liturgies. This is a great way to be involved and to learn more about the Mass. Open to adults who are active parishion-ers and to youth in at least the fourth grade who have received first Communion. Training is provided and a dress code is required. For the Pastoral Year that ended June 30, 2014, our family count is 2,249. Our member count is 6,403 individuals in those households! We have 191 Eucharistic Ministers serving in the Parish and 85 Lectors, 141 Altar Servers, 20 Cantors and 8 different choirs (70 choir members). We also have 32 Sacristans who set up the church for Mass, arriving an hour or more before Mass starts and staying after Mass to ensure liturgical items are properly taken care of and the church is ready for the next Mass. Our Faith Formation Catechists include 112 people who have direct responsibility for teaching along with 8 classroom aides. We also baptized 74 infants and children last pastoral year!

2014-2015 DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES.

All young adults 18 to 20-something years old are invited to a night of prayer and fellowship. If you’re just out of high school, in the midst of college, or just beginning married life, then this group is for you. The hardest part of being a young adult is making friends. Our high school peers are gone and it seems everyone is focused on getting ahead in the world. If you want true and lasting

friendships rooted in Christ, then please join us. We will meet on Saturday, September 13 at 7 pm in the St. Joseph Chapel for prayer and then head out for dinner at a local restaurant.

Evenings for the Engaged

Evenings for the Engaged is a six week marriage prepara-tion course for those who have registered and are pre-paring for the sacrament of marriage. St. Vincent de Paul Collection: Next Week after All Masses

You make the work of the Society possible and we thank you for your very generous and kind support. Many children of neighbors who come to St. Vincent’s will go to school in Sep-tember with supplies you have donated to the Little Red Schoolhouse. Some of the parents will come to the Clothing Bank for school clothes for their children or will need to ask for assistance with rent or utility bills or prescription drugs. Your prayer and financial support make it possible for us to provide as much assistance as possible to many men, women, and children. Please continue to support and pray for us!

Hospitality Ministers: Greeters and Ushers offer a welcoming presence.

It’s up to every parishioner to welcome the stranger, the newcomer to town, the visitor, the person that has been here week after week but gone unnoticed, as well as those we already know. We offer a smile, a friendly hello, a welcoming gesture or a helping hand. We are the living, breathing Body of Christ when we do this. Each one of us is important in helping us to be the face of God to all who walk through our doors.

There are some among us who do this as a ministry, who are here for their scheduled Mass time to greet, take the collection, and offer assis-tance. We are so much richer for their presence. They are ready for the unexpected, to open windows, direct Communion lines, make sure the infirm are cared for, hand out bulletins, or call for help in case of an emergency. Everyone looks to the usher for help when a problem arises.

Though we have dedicated individuals and families performing in this role, we always have need for more ushers, especially at Christmas and Easter. We also think it is important for someone to be at each entrance before Mass saying hello. Maybe this is your calling! Don’t underesti-mate the power of the greeting. No matter what Mass you go to, there is room for you. To help take the mystery out of this ministry we invite you to a training session September 16 from 6 – 7:15 pm in the Gathering Space and we’ll talk about the importance of welcoming and hospitality. Please let us know you’ll be coming by calling the Parish Office.

BOOKMAKING WORKSHOP

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) ministry is offering a free workshop in the art of bookmaking. In this hands-on class, participants will construct several sets of hard-cover, thread-bound books to be used by the children of the CGS ministry. All the materi-als used in the workshop will go toward the construction of these sets, but each partici-pant will leave with the knowledge and skills to continue personal works at home. Thursday, September 11 from 4-6 pm and Friday, September 12 from 6-8 pm Openings are limited and the class is offered to persons age 15 and older.
