“Thanks-giving” A Distinctive Meaning

Catholic Charities is deeply thankful for your positive response to the donation bin. As we all know, one way to give “thanks” is by “giving.” Just as the Lord has given so many blessings, this is an ideal time to give away any unwanted clothing to the Catholic Charities donation bin. Please note that in addition to all forms of used clothing, we also welcome small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, and books (no reference books). Happy “Thanks-giving”

Basketballs for East Side High It's my 33rd season as a girl's basketball coach and many of the girls are new to the game. I want to get them each a basketball to practice with at home. The size they need is Intermediate 28.5. I've found Amazon has the best price (Wilson Replica Game Basketball). If you would like to send it directly to the school, the address is Coach Arndt c/o East Side High School, 238 Van Buren Street, Newark, NJ 07105. If you would prefer to bring it to the 10:30 Mass, you'll find me in the choir loft. If you prefer to donate money towards this cause please write a check out to Helping Kids and mail it to 3 Union Terr., Belleville, NJ 07109. Thank you in advance! - Bill Arndt

Enhancing a Proud Tradition Campaign Prayer

Caring God, You have blessed us

With men and women who have founded

this parish community with Christ as “the head and the cornerstone.”

We pray for hearts that are fresh

with enthusiasm and energy

so that we might be faithful to their legacy

as we pave the way for the future.

Guide and help us

during this time of material sacrifice

and call to generous giving.

Inspire us to make choices that will benefit

the St. Mary Parish community,

so that rooted in our past

and dedicated to our present,

we might be visionaries of the future.

We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Original Bell of St. Mary’s Has a New Sign

The Original Bell of St. Mary’s has had it’s plaque installed. Take a look if you haven’t had the chance to do so!

The Bell from the bell tower is currently on display in front of the bell tower. The bell comes from the current bell tower. The bell was removed in September of 2010, due to its weight of 1200 pounds and poor flooring in the tower. The bell dates to 1882 and has the inscription of Sancta Maria, hinting that the bell was made specifically for St. Mary’s Parish. The bell was manufactured in Troy,

New York. The bell was recently added to the pad with the help of the Nutley Volunteer Rescue Squad.

That was so six hundred years ago… Whether you get your news from the Star-Ledger, Fox News or Twitter, it's safe to say that what you've heard was written within the past 24 hours and was meant to be interpreted through the lens of the same time period.

What about scripture? Clearly, scripture was written a long time ago. (More about this in a moment.)

First, let's pause for a true or false question:

True or false: The circumstances during the time in which a piece of scripture was written bears some influence on how we interpret its meaning.

The correct answer is "True." The word for this is historical criticism.

(In this context criticism means “to understand” rather than “to find fault with.”)

A timeline for today's readings (found on page 228) would look like this:

Book of Daniel 600 BC

Birth of Christ 1 AD

Death of Christ 33 AD

Paul's letter to the Hebrews 35-70 AD

Gospel of Luke 80-100 AD

Does this surprise you?

Have you ever thought that the stories of Jesus were passed on orally for about 50 years before they were first written down? This would be like me writing about life in the 1960's (including the death of JFK and MLK) based solely on childhood memories and the stories I heard from my parents.

My point is not to discredit or trivialize what we read and hear in the bible. Quite the contrary, I am suggesting that we listen to the stories that we may have heard before with fresh ears and open minds.
