This weekend the second collection is for The Catholic University of America. The mission of Catholic University centers on the discovery of knowledge and truth through excellence in teaching and research, all in service to the Church — a service that is greatly needed today. University faculty and scholars promote Catholic social teaching and, through their research and discourse, help form the Church’s response to challenging social issues of our time. In addition, Catholic University educates hundreds of priests and religious each year and can proudly call more than 12,000 of them alumni. Faith is expressed passionately through

prayer, acts of charity, and a concern for justice. And, as a result, the students are transformed. Guided by the virtues, a spirit of generosity, and above all, a love for God, they grow in understanding and wisdom. The people’s endowment is more than tuition assistance, it is a legacy, built upon 130 years of education in the Catholic intellectual tradition.

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary refers to a Christian feast day celebrating the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary and has been celebrated on September 8th since at least the sixth century. Catholics believe there is a special presence of God in Mary’s life from the beginning. Saint Augustine connects Mary’s birth with Jesus’ saving work. He tells the earth to rejoice and shine forth in the light of her birth. “She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed.” The opening prayer at Mass speaks of the birth of Mary’s Son as the dawn of our salvation, and asks for an increase of peace. We can see every human birth as a call for new hope in the world. The love of two human beings has joined with God in His creative work. The loving parents have shown hope in a world filled with travail. The new child has the potential to be a channel of God’s love and peace to the world. This is all true in a magnificent way in Mary. If Jesus is the perfect expression of God’s love, Mary is the foreshadowing of that love. If Jesus has brought the fullness of salvation, Mary is its dawning. Birthday celebrations bring happiness to the celebrant as well as to family and friends. Next to the birth of Jesus, Mary’s birth offers the greatest possible happiness to the world. Each time we celebrate her birth, we can confidently hope for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world at large.

Grandparents Day is celebrated by many Americans on September 8th. Promoted by Marian McQuade of West Virginia in the 1970s, a bill was finally signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 designating the Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. Mrs. McQuade's work with seniors made her particularly attentive to shut-ins and other elderly not fortunate enough to have family members close by. She viewed National Grandparents Day as an opportunity for children to adopt a grandparent to provide some friendship to those who might now be alone in their later years.

Grandparents Day Blessing God of our ancestors,

we thank you for our children and our children's children.

They are reminders from you about how precious life can be. We humbly ask for wisdom and patience as we take pride and

wonder in our grandchildren. Those of us who now pray to you

also seek your blessing upon these men and women who are our grandparents or who act in place of grandparents.

Bless all the children and their parents and grandparents with your abundant grace.

We ask all this through the intercession of Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

patron saints of grandparents, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

just when i thought I was too

old to fall in love again i became a

grandparent
