THANKS FOR SUPPORTING THE YARD SALE!Jack and Nancy Smith want to thank all the parishioners who contributed in any way to the overwhelming success of the 2020 SMM Yard Sale. Nearly all of you helped out by donating your new and used items, baking goodies, accepting donations, sorting, pricing, moving, delivering, displaying and/or selling the merchandise to everyone shopping our August 8th sale. Thanks also for your generous response to our call for cash, checks and Kroger gift cards. Your donations covered our food expenses, propane for the grills and gas for the people who picked up large merchandise. Because of YOU, we contributed over $11,500.00 to our parish. Just as important, together we also supported our greater Westside neighborhood, recycled useful items and showed that we can have a safe, festive event even during these uncertain times. Thanks especially to our committee and their family members who contributed their time, great ideas and enthusiasm to this labor-intensive effort: Gloria Angelo, Teresa Briggs, Karen Cottrell, Joanne Davis, Liz King, Alex Lipscomb, Avery Lipscomb, Diane Puccetti, Paul, Becky & Tony Puccetti, Brian & Kyle Regan, Kathy Rowe, Melanie & Alan Kaiser, Ricardo & Ilma Alfaro, Segundo, Maria, Michelle & Amy Vanegas, Karen Harrison, Jessica Crowe, Shelley Hamilton, Mary Ann Graham, Jan Ries, Ron & Dee Sexton and Jim, Jane & Patrick Stumpp. We also truly appreciate everyone who participated in any way in transporting all the furniture and other heavy merchandise to our sale. We especially thank Segundo Vanegas (and family), Jim Gerardi and Brian & Kyle Regan, who gave up many weekday evenings for over a year, to help move furniture and large appliances from multiple houses to the St. Agnes garage where it was stored before moving it all to the school. We also appreciate Columbus police officer and parishioner Buck Dent who provided security for us again this year.A special thank-you goes out to Ricardo and Ilma Alfaro, who again headed up a remarkable team which sponsors our fantastic Latin American food tent and prepares all the food. Every year, our yard sale guests look forward to the delicious tacos! Thanks also to Father Toner and Father Watson for your support and enthusiasm for our sale. Finally, we acknowledge the SMM staff for their ongoing assistance from the very beginning to the final clean-up day. Lawrence, Doug, Adam, Andrew and especially Carol and Alice made things easier for everyone by quickly, kindly and efficiently ensuring the communication, financing, set-up, cleaning and other tasks of such a project are completed. Your hard work is deeply appreciated. We couldn’t have done it without you.

ATTENTION MENKapaun’s Men Virtue Series: “He was the greatest example of manhood that I’ve ever seen in my life.” Servant of God Father Emil Kapaun was a heroic Catholic priest and Army chaplain who spent his life in service to his fellow men on the battlefields and in the prison camps of Korea. In the dire conditions of the Communist prison camp, he inspired men to band together and keep fighting, and his story has been inspiring men ever since. week.

DONATIONS NEEDED!!As St. Mary Magdalene students head back to school, many things will be different to maintain a safe environment. For safety reasons, the drinking fountains will be disabled and student supplies will not be shared. The school is asking for donations of gallon Ziplock bags and cash donations to purchase small bottles of drinking water. The Ziplock bags will be used to keep student supplies separated for individual use, and the water will be kept on hand for any students who are unable to bring water with them for the day. Please place Ziplock bags in the box located in the gathering space. Put your cash donation in an envelope marked “water” and place them in the offertory basket.

Thank you in advance for your helpin making it a safe “Return to Learn!”

TOWARD A NEW NORMALThe Farewell Yard Party and the Parish Yard Sale demonstrated that if we pay attention to safe practices we can have a more normal parish life.

As we prepare to start the new school year, we are making sure we are able to protect our students and teachers while offering an outstanding traditional Catholic Education. Our principle, Ms. Courtney Ryan has been engaged in every aspect of getting things right.

We had a successful Youth Group gathering of 20 plus students. The youth learned how to make So’more’s and roast hotdogs. Next month they will be preparing packets for the homeless.

Mass attendance is settling down. I have opened the side sections of St. Mary Magdalene at the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass because of growing numbers. The Sunday 5:00 p.m. Mass is up to forty persons and growing. I plan to resume using servers in September.

Communion Distributors have started visiting out homebound and I will be making the rounds starting in September.

Bishop Brennen has confirmed that he does have plans for Father Watson. I offered to keep him but the Bishop said he is working out a couple of things first.

The Franciscan Sister of the Immaculate Heart have moved in at St. Aloysius and have been spotted at St. Mary Magdalene as well.
