Prepare the Way: the Highway of Saints
The word "advent" had been used in classical antiquity as a technical term for the arrival of a high official or the king or emperor of a province. John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for the advent, the coming of a new king. This king, Jesus, would have not only the power to forgive sins, but would heal, would show the face of the Father of mercy. John the Baptist prepared the people for this king with his message of a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. "I will run the way of your commandments, for you will broaden my heart" (Psalm 119:32). I have always loved this verse, especially the translation I learned many years ago, which goes something like this: "I run in the path of your commands for you have set my heart free."
I have tested this freedom. We all have. We have tried our own methods, our own approaches in relationships, in how we handle life. We know when we have strayed from the ways of Christ. I knew, because the peace of Christ that I had encountered as a young evangelical Christian went away when I tried to become a little more worldly, a little more in control of my own destiny as a college student. I knew I had strayed when my experiences opened up for me a world of a kind of knowledge that only brought me further alienation from the best part of myself, shame, and addiction. The way back to peace? Repentance. Literally, to turn and go not only the other way, but directly to God! And his mercy. And his wisdom.
The Hebrew word "to repent" (to turn) also reflects the notion of journeying and pilgrimage. In this way, the road of John the Baptist--"Saints Highway"--is that of repentance! Of continual turning to the light of Christ. This highway is the highway of the moral life in Christ:
The splendour of truth shines forth in all the works of the Creator and, in a special way, in man, created in the image and likeness of God (cf. Gen 1:26). Truth enlightens man’s intelligence and shapes his freedom, leading him to know and love the Lord. Hence the Psalmist prays: “Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord” (Ps 4:6). Called to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, “the true light that enlightens everyone” (Jn 1:9), people become “light in the Lord” and “children of light” (Eph 5:8), and are made holy by “obedience to the truth.” (1 Pet 1:22). (John Paul II, Veritatis Splendor, The Splendor of Truth, 1993).
Do we desire to be Saints in Training? Are we fully confident in the goodness of the will of the Father? Can we learn to run the path of His commands with joy in loving obedience? The “yes” to these questions comes when we are able to completely abandon ourselves to Divine Providence. When we can say along with Mary, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word" (Luke 1:38). Mary's Magnificat then becomes our own. And we can fully commit ourselves to the Lord's Prayer as a powerful act of self-abandon every time we participate in Mass. No longer afraid of losing our own will, identity, or self-worth in abandon to God, we discover the joy of the saints: to participate in God's perfect and loving will is to be fully alive. Fr. Tim

(1 Pedro 1:22). ”(Juan Pablo II, Veritatis Splendor, The Splendor of Truth, 1993).

Our Lady of Guadalupe
When Mary appeared to Juan Diego as Our Lady of Guadalupe, she had encouraging words for him. "Am I not here, I who am your mother?" In the image on Juan Diego's tilma (tunic), Mary identifies herself with the Aztec people. She has their hair and features, their symbolic maternity dress. She incorporated their important symbols of the sun, moon, and stars. Wednesday’s Mass includes two Gospel options. Both are familiar passages from the Gospel of Luke - the Annunciation and the Visitation. Both are equally relevant to today's feast because Mary's yes to Christ isn't only to care for him but to come to us. Our Lady of Guadalupe is pregnant. The image bears witness to Mary's yes to conceive the Savior of the World. But even in her pregnancy, she goes to care for Elizabeth. Now Mother to all the world, Mary comes to the aid of her children, reminding them of her presence among them.
