184. No es el momento para desarrollar aquí todas las graves cuestiones sociales que afectan al mundo actual, algunas de las cuales comenté en el capítulo segundo. Éste no es un documento social, y para reflexionar acerca de esos diversos temas tenemos un instrumento muy adecuado en el Compendio de la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia, cuyo uso y estudio recomiendo vivamente. Además, ni el Papa ni la Iglesia tienen el monopolio en la interpretación de la realidad social o en la propuesta de soluciones para los problemas contemporáneos. Puedo repetir aquí lo que lúcidamente indicaba Pablo VI: « Frente a situaciones tan diversas, nos es difícil pronunciar una palabra única, como también proponer una solución con valor universal. No es éste nuestro propósito ni tampoco nuestra misión. Incumbe a las comunidades cristianas analizar con objetividad la situación propia de su país ».

185. A continuación procuraré concentrarme en dos grandes cuestiones que me parecen fundamentales en este momento de la historia. Las desarrollaré con bastante amplitud porque considero que determinarán el futuro de la humanidad. Se trata, en primer lugar, de la inclusión social de los pobres y, luego, de la paz y el diálogo social.

II. LA INCLUSIÓN SOCIAL DE LOS POBRES

186. De nuestra fe en Cristo hecho pobre, y siempre cercano a los pobres y excluidos, brota la preocupación por el desarrollo integral de los más abandonados de la sociedad.

Unidos a Dios escuchamos un clamor

Cada cristiano y cada comunidad están llamados a ser instrumentos de Dios para la liberación y promoción de los pobres, de manera que puedan integrarse plenamente en la sociedad; esto supone que seamos dóciles y atentos para escuchar el clamor del pobre y socorrerlo. Basta recorrer las Escrituras para descubrir cómo el Padre bueno quiere escuchar el clamor de los pobres: « He visto la aflicción de mi pueblo en Egipto, he escuchado su clamor ante sus opresores y conozco sus sufrimientos. He bajado para librarlo […] Ahora, pues, ve, yo te envío… » (Ex 3,7-8.10), y se muestra solícito con sus necesidades: « Entonces los israelitas clamaron al Señor y Él les suscitó un libertador » (Jc 3,15). Hacer oídos sordos a ese clamor, cuando nosotros so-mos los instrumentos de Dios para escuchar al pobre, nos sitúa fuera de la voluntad del Padre y de su proyecto, porque ese pobre « clamaría al Señor contra ti y tú te cargarías con un pecado » (Dt 15,9).

184. This is not the time or the place to examine in detail the many grave social questions affecting today’s world, some of which I have dealt with in the second chapter. This Exhorta-tion is not a social document, and for reflection on those different themes we have a most suitable tool in the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, whose use and study I heartily recommend. Furthermore, neither the Pope nor the Church have a monopoly on the interpretation of social realities or the proposal of solutions to contemporary problems. Here I can repeat the insightful observation of Pope Paul VI: “In the face of such widely varying situations, it is difficult for us to utter a unified message and to put forward a solution which has universal validity. This is not our ambition, nor is it our mission. It is up to the Christian communities to analyze with objectivity the situation which is proper to their own country”.

185. In what follows I intend to concentrate on two great issues which strike me as fundamental at this time in history. I will treat them more fully because I believe that they will shape the future of humanity. These issues are first, the inclusion of the poor in society, and second, peace and social dialogue.

II. THE INCLUSION OF THE POOR IN SOCIETY

186. Our faith in Christ, who became poor, and was always close to the poor and the outcast, is the basis of our concern for the integral development of society’s most neglected members.

In union with God, we hear a plea

Each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument of God for the liberation and promotion of the poor, and for enabling them to be fully a part of society. This demands that we be docile and attentive to the cry of the poor and to come to their aid. A mere glance at the Scriptures is enough to make us see how our gracious Father wants to hear the 148 cry of the poor: “I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them… so I will send you…” (Ex 3:7-8, 10). We also see how he is concerned for their needs: “When the Israelites cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up for them a deliverer” (Jg 3:15). If we, who are God’s means of hearing the poor, turn deaf ears to this plea, we oppose the Father’s will and his plan; that poor person “might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt” (Dt 15:9).

REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

Trinity Sunday (May 31) Dt 4:32-34,39-40 Ps 33:4-6,9,18-20,22 Rom 8:14-17 Mt 28:16-20

Through baptism we participate in the life of the Blessed Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, while on earth amid the obscurity of faith and, after death, in the eternal light of heaven (cf. Paul VI, SPF 9). We Christians thus have the privilege of a faith in the Blessed Trinity that underwent a process of clarification during the first centuries of our Christian era. “The Old Testament very clearly proclaimed the Father, and more obscurely the Son... In effect, it was not prudent, at a time when the divinity of the Father was not yet proclaimed to proclaim openly the divinity of the Son, and, when the divinity of the Son was not yet admitted, to add the Holy Spirit... In this way by advances ‘from glory to glory’ is the manner in which the light of the Trinity emerged with a radiance ever more splendid” (St. Gregory of Nanzianzus, or theolo. 5, 26). The Catechism affirms (n. 234): “The mystery of the Most Blessed Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the ‘hierarchy of the truths of faith” (GCD, 43). “The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men ‘and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin” (GCD, 47). Thus when we direct ourselves to God, we do not communicate with an abstract entity but with Someone absolute and infinite who has his own proper name: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In this way, by our relation to the Holy Spirit we receive the spiritual filiation to such a degree that it makes us exclaim with Christ “Abba!” (Father), constituting us as brothers of Christ and coheirs with Him of the inscrutable riches of the Father concelebrated by the Son and the Holy Spirit.

REFLEXIÓN SOBRE LAS ESCRITURAS

Por el bautismo participamos en la vida de la Santísima Trinidad, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, aquí abajo en la oscuridad de la fe y, después de la muerte, en la luz eterna (cf. PABLO VI, SPF 9). Los cristianos tenemos, por tanto, el privilegio de la fe en la Santísima Trinidad, que fue esclareciéndose poco a poco durante los primeros siglos de nuestra era cristiana. «El Antiguo Testamento proclamaba muy claramente al Padre, y más obscuramente al Hijo… En efecto, no era prudente, cuando todavía no se confesaba la divinidad del Padre, proclamar abiertamente la del Hijo y, cuando la divinidad del Hijo no era aún admitida, añadir el Espíritu Santo… Así por avances y progresos “de gloria en gloria”, es como la luz de la Trinidad estalla en resplandores cada vez más espléndidos» (SAN GREGORIO NACIANCENO, or. theol. 5, 26). «El misterio de la Santísima Trinidad —afirma el CATECISMO, n.234— es el misterio central de la fe y de la vida cristiana. Es el misterio de Dios en sí mismo. Es, pues, la fuente de todos los otros misterios de la fe; es la luz que los ilumina. Es la enseñanza más fundamental y esencial en la “jerarquía de las verdades de fe” (DCG 43). “Toda la historia de la salvación no es otra cosa que la historia del camino y los medios por los cuales el Dios verdadero y único, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, se revela, reconcilia consigo a los hombres, apartados por el pecado, y se une con ellos” (DCG 47)». En conclusión, cuando nos dirigimos a Dios no nos comunicamos con un ente abstracto, sino con Alguien absoluto e infinito que tiene nombre propio: Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. De este modo, por nuestra relación con el Espíritu Santo recibimos la filiación espiritual en tal grado que nos hace exclamar con Cristo ¡Abba! (Padre) constituyéndonos en hermanos de Cristo y coherederos con Él de las riquezas insondables del Padre concelebrado por el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo.

Fourth Annual Fortn ight For Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness Des ignated by the Un ited States Conference o f Cathol ic B ishops

In 1953, Pope Pius XII stated, “We belong to the Church militant; and She is militant because on earth the powers of darkness are ever restless to encompass Her destruction.”

It is evident in our time that we are the Church militant as we battle the ravages of laws and regulations enabled by a culture hostile and intolerant toward moral beliefs and religious practices. The increasing rejection of any limits on personal behavior puts religious liberty, the foundation of our civil society, at grave risk.

Unfettered personal satisfaction and convenience, putting man’s wishes ahead of God’s law, is reflected in the destruction of life allowed by Roe v Wade. The Supreme Court may soon issue an opinion redefining marriage which will deny the truth of the fundamental belief that the family formed in the union of one man and one woman is the basic unit of our society.

Robert P. George, the keynote speaker at the upcoming June 25, 2015, Rally for Religious Freedom, asks if we are willing to follow the Gospel today, “So for us there is no avoiding the question: Am I ashamed of the Gospel? Am I unwilling to stand with Christ by proclaiming His truths? Oh, things were easy on Palm Sunday. Standing with Jesus and His truths was the in thing to do. Everybody was shouting “Hosanna.” But now it’s Friday, and the days of acceptable Christianity are over. Jesus is before Pilate. The crowds are shouting “crucify him.” The Lord is being led to Calvary. Jesus is being nailed to the cross.”

“And where are we? Where are you and I? Are we afraid to be known? Are we afraid to be known as his disciples? Are we ashamed of the Gospel?”

To preserve America’s rights of conscience and religious liberty, Catholics in every diocese and parish will come together in prayer, education and action during this Fortnight For Freedom. We claim our constitutionally protected right to a robust freedom of religion and we exercise that right by bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel in our lives, schools, work and in the public square. For if we do not know our freedom…and if we do not exercise that freedom, it is already lost.

As we join together every Sunday to celebrate the Eucharist, let’s take time to remember and pray for

all the thousands who worry about how they are going to put food on the table for their children this

week.

More than 35% of the 300,000 people on Long Island who receive emergency food each year are

children under the age of 18. Please consider supporting the work of the Catholic Ministries Appeal

so that we can continue to care for God’s children and their families through our Parish Outreach

programs and Catholic Charities. Our hope is that each family will make a gift. We cannot ask

everyone to consider the same size gift, but after prayer and reflection, each family is invited to make

a gift in response to God’s generosity in their lives.

No gift is too small and all gifts make a difference in the lives of others!
